Only reason I ask is Im fed up with paying some one to do some thing that possibly I could do my self

My understanding on this is that you should be a "competent" person whilst doing the tests.

 

One would suggest that you should be an electrician or have the appropriate training from such person.

 

I saw a kit on Ebay recently.

 

I am useless as sometimes i get electrocuted whilst changing a light bulb so i will pay the £0.50 per item!

Just had mine done. For the cost of it i'd rather pay someone who knows what they are doing and i can get on with the business of enjoying doing discos. Also they provide me with the necessary certificates that some (very very few) venues require.

next year i am thinking of doing one of the courses and buying some PAT testing gear for two reasons ,

 

one i can test my own gear although the £1000 investment will take a long time to pay back with just testing my own gear!

 

Two i can look at offering PAT testing as a service as a bit of extra income... it may even open up different job opportunities.

 

I used to install mains spurs etc before part P and before i broke my wrist badly , i have worked with electricians and electronic engineers for over 14 years on first fixes etc and believe my theoretical knowlege is OK and my practical hands on knowledge is ok too so i have a good starting base i will need to learn a lot i know but its something i enjoy and as courses for PAT testing are only £300 ish it seems like a small investment , the testing equipment ,well at least good testing equipment is a larger investment but i guess as with many things you get what you pay for.

 

I currently also have a test sheet i made my self after each function i do i inspect every cable and clean it (sad i know) but this gives me chance to check for any potential problems these are cables that include ones that need to be PAT tested and ones that are not.

 

I currently paid £45 flat fee plus £2.50 per item from a local firm to have my gear PAT tested and the guy who did it i felt was ,how can i put it.... a bit slow if i am honest. That's what made me think i could do that.

Its cheaper if you do a C & G 2377 course at a local college, around £150, rather than use one of the "specialist" course providers.

 

Its not that difficult either if you already have a basic knowledge of electrics. 90% of defects are found by visual inspection. The only other thing you have to swot up on is the different classes of appliances.

 

Good equipment like Seaward is expensive and you have the added cost of getting it calibrated each year.

I asked this question a while ago.

You'll need to be a competent person - so should already know the different of Class 1/2 insulation, and ideally know why each test is required.

 

I test my own gear- simply because I've a background in electrical engineering. However, I have no qualifications specific to PAT testing.

 

If you need to buy your own tester and are not electrically minded, there is not much to be saved in trying to DIY. If there were every any problems with your equipment (ie, it causes a fire) - your competence to test your own equipment would be called into question.

 

I already had the knowledge and test device, but would find someone local if I didn't.

I have a little bit of leccy knowledge ( i now you dont heat the bath with an electric heater )

I do most of my own repairs until it comes down to the mixer and intel lights. Being a part time firefighter I think im pretty grounded excuse the pun in what causes electrical fires, so I might just givethe course a go and see if "I" can make a little money out of it as well .

It isn't a legal requirement to have PAT testing, it is however a legal requirement to ensure the safety of the public or anybody else that may come into contact with your gear.

If an accident was to occur you would need to prove that you had taken all measures available to ensure the equipment was safe. Although PAT testing doesn't totally absolve you of blame, it will show that you have a system in practice to keep your gear safe.

PAT testing doesn't stop at a once a year inspection though, you are still expected to inspect your gear every time you set it up, just as an MOT doesn't mean you don't need to check your tyres every time you go out, having a bald tyre even with a full MOT will still get you a fine.

 

You will also find that an increasing number of venues will only allow you to perform if your equipment is tested, especially in the wedding market, as these tend to be the more upmarket venues (listed buildings etc), also your PLI (again not a legal requirement, but also increasingly being asked for) may well be invalid if you cannot show that your equipment is maintained.

Not law, but venues can set the requirements - so if the venue requests, you provide it if you want to work there, whether they check / view on night, or not!

So if the venue says you can work there if you wear a wooly hat, you can choose to wear a wooly hat!
