  2. Even Bose will state that the Bose L1 / B1 System was designed for Musicians, that said many Dj's seem to be managing okay with them, with the only hurdle being the method of connection, which to solve only costs a few pounds.

     

    There was a rumour that Bose was designing a system more appropriate to recorded music rather than live PA and aimed at DJ's, however that does remain just a rumour and is totally unfounded. I guess the fact that the existing systems works for both, then why change it.

     

    I would be interested to see how the Bose System fairs in venues with Sound Limiters fitted to the back of the room. Will the Bose dynamics of making the volume appear equal from all angles, trigger the limiter more, or will it help counteract the bloody things! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif - Hopefully it'll make them self destruct. The same applies in venues with neighbours, will the Bose dynamics travel beyond the venue walls, across the car park and in to peoples front rooms - or will they make no difference when compared to a conventional system, perhaps they are more controllable.

     

    These are questions which I would be interest to see the answers to, when those who own a system, ecounter such a venue - would be great if people can post their findings as and when they occur.

     

    In the meantime, I still haven't heard a system, so am unable to give my opinion on the sound quality either way.

    The only time that you will need a license, is

     

    Holding a public event (where you are the promoter) or appearing at a carnival or other outside event where the promoter hasn't obtained a PPL License

     

    Appearing at a pub / club which doesn't already hold a PPL License.

     

    In both of the above you will need to obtain a one off license from the PPL for the event

     

    If you convert CD / Vinyl to MP3 format for use in a pub or a club, you will need to obtain a digital DJ license and an SG-6 from the MCPS, regardless of whether it has a PPl License.

     

    If you convert CD / Vinyl to MP3 format for use at a private function then you'll need an SG-6 from the MCPS, but will not be able to obtain any license from the PPL, because one doesn't yet exist.

    That would be the cheerfully optimistic way of looking at it.

     

    However, this is the UK, and this is the PPL and MCPS we are talking about and so my own take on it is probably slightly different to yours http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/smile.gif

     

    How I see the current situation.

     

    Prior to last year, there was no definitive yes or no from the Authorities as to the legality of converting legally owned Vinyl / CD tracks to Mp3 , purely for ease of archiving or playback purpose. Many Dj's did it, and there was generally a go / no go attitude as to whether it was illegal or not - depending on who you asked.

     

    Many just went along saying that it was okay to legally 'back up' legally owned material to another format such as Mp3 or CDR, and others came back with dire predictions that the elzebub would track you down and eat your liver if you did http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/whistling.gif

     

    Sadly, the elzebub prediction was possibly the closest. The PPL eventually came along with its instrument of torture, known innocently enough as the Digital DJ Licence and announced that the practice was illegal in the UK, and DJ's not obtaining permission / licensing, and still using laptops / PC's were basically breaking the law.

     

    However, one tiny oversight - the PPL jurisdiction for licensing, only falls under the Banner of Public Performances - it never has, and still doesn't have, any licensing authority over privately held and booked functions - thus the DJ Licence had no authority for licensing DJs who did these functions, and so its superfluous for our needs http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/rolleyes.gif

     

    However, that means that using a Laptop / PC for Private functions is still something of a legal grey area. However, the PPL were in discussion regarding rolling one out for DJ's who do private events. How this can be done, when they have no authority (yet) over these types of events, is anybodies guess, but I predict that the law as to what the term Public Performance actually includes will change in 2007, and all DJ's will probably need some form of a license of sort http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/rolleyes.gif - that is only my Personal Opinion though, and not rumour or fact.

     

    However the fact that the PPL are still looking at it, probably suggests that it is still illegal to use digital files at private functions, it's just annoying for a large number of DJ's that they need a license to make it legal but one doesn't exist.

     

    Remember that the PPL / Digital Dj license is only half of the story, you still need an SG-6 from the MCPS regardless of ownership of a digital Dj license. So basically even if you have bought one, you are still only half-legal and need to contact the MCPS and pay around 10p for each track you convert to MP3.

     

    It's all very confusing, and drawn out. If you lived in other European Countries and the US, you would be able to legally produce back ups of CD's and Vinyl for your own use without a license or fear of prosecution, under their 'Fair Use' copyright laws, which are obviously far fairer and lenient than the UK. They are also less confusing, and the U.S fair use introduction back in the 1990's hasn't brought the music industry to its knees either http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/rolleyes.gif

    Most of the above discuss the Digital Dj License at some point, and you'll probably find what you are looking for.

     

    But just to clear up any confusion, the Digital DJ License DOES NOT cover you for using a laptop / pc / harddrive based system at private functions. So if you intend doing Weddings, 21sts, Anniversaries and other family functions (A huge percentage of Mobile DJs work!) then the existing license will not cover you and such a license does not currently exist in that form.

     

    All the Digital License covers you for, are pub / club work and any other event classed as a Public Performance - see the terms and FAQ on the PPL site.

  10. At 16 I was earning £35 on a YTS Scheme for 38 hours. Whilst most of the others of the same age were still working a paper round for pocket money!

    Ian makes a good point, £170 is a lot more than some older DJ's I know are earning, certainly it falls as an average, at least in our Recent Poll and also the two before that one http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/smile.gif .

     

    But, if you think your skills are worth more than that, then you certainly shouldn't be persuaded against raising your prices, just don't do it to the point where you price yourself out of the local market!.

     

    I also agree with Tony, I've never figured out why some people charge £50+ more for Weddings compared to other functions. Surely your per hour rate should be universal, as I can't see that your overheads (expenses) differ that much between a Dinner Dance for a local golf club and a Wedding Reception or a Birthday http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/533.gif . Put this way, would you not feel peeved if you called a Plumber and he charged you more than your next door neighbour just because your house was worth more, and you just happened to have a Merc parked in the driveway?.

     

    Personally, I think the only time that fees should change from function to function are perhaps where the distance involves more travelling time and fuel, an awkward venue which may require more setting up time, or that you are asked to provide a larger roadshow or some other requirement which you wouldn't normally supply as standard (ie hire gear, PA Hire etc, Special Effects etc) or where you are asked to play additional hours before / after the agreed timescale.

    Taking a different viewpoint for a moment, is it not the cheap goods piled high in computer shops which facilitate the easy means of downloading and 'burning' this material in the first place.     If a ban came in tomorrow, making selling these products illegal, would your own business not suffer (Not just in Burners but in demand for faster and better PC Systems too not to mention all of that extra storage HHD space!)

     

    Personally I like the idea they have in the US, of adding a dedicated additional tax to the sales of devices which can duplicate, and the media they use. This tax then goes back to the industry to counteract the cost of piracy. It seems like the Americans have long since realised that the problem is too big to go away overnight, so they instead tax the means and source of the problem!. It doesn't make it right, but its effective.

     

    So if they added 15p to every Blank DVD-R and £15 to every DVD Burner to be collected and paid at the POS towards the potential copyright infringment, I would say that this would be a start.

    Nothing wrong with that, providing that the total load is below 3Kw

     

    I use 4 lighting effects at 250W each, even allowing for fans and circuitry that is less than 300W drawn from the mains, per effect and so 1200W

     

    This gives me 1800W Spare for the Audio side which is more than enough for Dual CD, Mixer and Radio Mic Receiver and a 1000W Amp running into 8 ohms / channel.

     

    So theoretically, it could run from one socket.

     

    Of course, I still run the Audio from one socket and Lighting from another, as i've found that its good practice to split the load, and also if you are going to trip an rcd or blow it fuse it is more likely to happen with a lighting effect than an Audio device - more often than not as a result of bulb failure or condensation forming when you bring in an effect from the cold winter night air into a hot venue.

     

    So by splitting the lighting and sound independantly, if your lighting does trip your plug in RCD or take out a plug fuse, then the lighting will go, but you don't have the embarrassment of losing the sound too http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/smile.gif

  16. I remember you posting about him some months ago, and speaking of the hope and courage that he had in fighting the disease, and it seemed that he kept this right until the end and never gave up.

     

    We speak of heroes on the football field and TV, but I think its Kim, and other like him, who show true courage in real life adversity who really deserve the title.
