  1. Well the wires did the trick and I managed to get the grille off. Hopefully I'll be able to get it back into place again fairly easily!
  2. Thanks for the advice. I guess I'll have to do that. As you say - at least I have working speakers... kind of anyway... One of the ports has has come loose, and I can't get the front grill off to fix it back in place. Looking at the exploded view in the pdf, it looks like I have to take the molded top off (which I've done) and then the grill slides up and out, but it won't budge and I don't want to force it. The whole speaker including grill has been painted, so it may be that the grill is stuck because of that. I'm not really sure what is the best way to get enough grip in it witho
  3. Just a quick update. It turned out that the recess plates I ordered were too small to fit properly, so I had a pair of adapter plates machined and drilled which the recess plates sit in. They cost me another £40 plus about another £25 for the fixings, spray paint, some silicone sealant to make sure they were air-tight, and a bit of sand paper to remove the slight rust that was on them. I finally put it all together last night and briefly tested them with the output from my PC. I only turned up the gains on the amp half way, but the M350s sound clean and powerful. I'm very happy with how
  4. I used to do a bit of production in my own bedroom studio, and also bedroom DJing using a pair of Alesis Monitor ones (the old Mk1 version): http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/1994_artic...ismonitor1.html I used them with an old Technics Hifi amp (not sure but I think it was around 85w RMS per channel), and that was fine for my purposes, although it wasn't very loud compared to PA systems. I think that your main problem is that you are looking at lower end PA systems which are designed to favor power rather than sound quality. For a studio, accurate reproduction of a wide range of fr
  5. Thanks for the reply Bob. After more searching I actually found some 2 x 6mm squ. last night, which I've ordered: http://www.thomann.de/gb/cordial_cls260.htm I'm surprised you can get away with only 2 x 1.5mm. You must have quite short cables or an amp with a high DF to begin with? Have you tried thicker cable to see if it sounds better?
  6. Well I've been reading up on damping factor, and how big a part cables play with the damping factor of a system. There's a very good piece on the subject that can be found here: http://www.bennettprescott.com/ My amp (QSC GX5) has a very modest damping factor to begin with (just 100), so in order to conserve what little I have, I will need fairly beefy speaker cable. I already have some good quality 12 AWG, but from what I understand, 11 AWG or even 10 AWG cable should make quite a noticeable difference. Would it be worth upgrading to thicker cable? Can anyone recommen
  7. I'm only just finding out what is what myself after around 15 years of not being involved in pro-audio/PA gear, so don't take my word as gospel. I went for a pair of used JBL M350 full range cabinets (around 20 years old now), which I remember hearing many moons ago. They were excellent sounding at the time. I'm not sure if JBL produces cabs to the same standard now. Hopefully someone else can give you better ideas for what would be a good buy speaker wise at the moment. Choosing amps is a bit easier. I just got a QSC GX series (the GX5) since they have excellent reviews, are ve
  8. That certainly would be starting small. What are you intending to do with it? I don't think it would be much good except for a little bedroom DJ setup, and perhaps karaoke in a very small venue. If your intention is to do house parties, I'd say throw another £100-300 at it, buy a good pair of 2nd hand speakers and a better amp (yes, you'll need a mixer too, and that will cost a bit more on top), or chances are you'll end up running it full pelt and knacker it in a short space of time. Better to buy a system with more RMS (ie more headroom), and not to run it so hard. That way it'll l
  9. Hello all, After my precious post in the Techie Talk forum, where I was advised that my amp (Citronic PL 3800 - 1100W RMS x2 @ 8 ohm) was too powerful for my JBL M350s (350W continuous pink noise/1400W peak pink noise 8 ohm), I'd like to ask what members of this forum would recommend instead? Here's where the specs for the JBLs came from: http://www.cieri.net/Documenti/Cataloghi/P...%20-%20Depliant %20%28English%29.pdf I'd like to get the most I can out of my speakers, which requires a more powerful amp - as I understand it, half of the PEAK rating of the speaker would be
  10. I just had a look at the maplin links you posted McCardle, and the recess plate there is not quite right. However, a bit more searching turned up this one, which should fit reasonably well: http://www.bluearan.co.uk/index.php?id=ADH...de=manufacturer The only downside is they are out of stock, and I can't find them anywhere else, but I ordered a pair and they should be here around the New Year. So thanks again - I wouldn't have known what to look for without that link!
  11. Thanks for the replies. It does look like the X-overs are separate from the back plate, and I'm 99% sure I can still see them in place. There is actually a pairs of "ribbon" wires (4 wires total) with two "spade" type connectors for each speaker. I just checked them a bit more carefully, and I can see the "stripes" that indicate the polarity. It looks like they might be original wiring and possibly plug directly into the back panel, but some insulation tape (!!!) wound on the wires behind the spade connectors makes me a little suspicious! Since there are supposed
  12. Hi all, I just collected a pair of M350s. Stupid of me, I know, but after a very long drive (10 hrs) I failed to check that everything was in order. When I got back and unloaded them I noticed that the back plates that have the speaker connectors were missing. There are just bare wires coming out of the holes where the panels should be instead. I've sent an email to JBL asking if they have replacements that they could send me, but I'm not holding out much hope for that since they are so old. So I've also ordered a pair of speakon connectors in case that does not pan out. My main
