Saturdays, Kelly Clarkson & Lady GaGa are worth playing and possibly Flo-Rida with an RnB crowd. The rest are a bit slow.

Never been asked to play any of these!!

I've been asked for Lady Gaga, Flo Rida, Lily Allen & Kings of Leon in the last couple of weeks - 2 Weddings and a 50th, so not at 18ths, clubs etc. And anyhow, since when did we only play what people ask for and not chosen tracks ourselves too?

  2. I had it too.. definitley a scam, just ask to be put in touch with their Wedding co-ordinator at the venue to discuss access before providing a quote and I bet you'll never hear anything from them.

Oh, and they can't be having their Wedding in your city and my city, apart from the fact I don't even live in a city anyway!

  3. Not really an event as such, but guessed this would be the right place to post. This is just a social meet-up mainly, nothing organised like a NADJ or SEDA night.

For anyone in the area interested in meet-ups and networking with fellow DJs, here's the latest info on the regional DJ meet-up/curry club -

    Gentlemen,

In the interest of geographical fair play we are now looking for restaurant suggestions for the March meeting of the Cotswold DJ Curry Club. Oz Kahn selected the last one in Gloucester and I personally think it will take some beating but I will gladly be proven wrong, new members are more than welcome.

The dates on offer for the March get together are 16th, 17th, 18th, 23 rd, 24th, 25th and the 26th so if you could get back to us with a few preferred dates that would be great.

In the intrests of getting as many folk together as possible it would be good to agree a date when everyone is free, before setting anything in stone. And of course any suggestions for restaurants would be welcome.

  4. For those of you that don't know me i'm James H and have worked as a dj for a few years with experience in working in mallorca as well as on cruise ships before settling down in little old Worcestershire where i still DJ both on the mobile scene and on local radio as well as provide other services such as stage, lighting, PA hire, event management and other event type things like that for events across the UK.

Nah, never heard of you... :D

    Welcome along!

  5. Not with the cost of Electricity these days, no.

I do, but not this year. Whilst I believe that there are Dj's out there who still genuinely doing well, and the Dj Gods willing, may they long continue to do so, however I also think that there are a few who have a staunch refusal to look facts in the face and are trying every which way to convince themselves that things are still boom rather than bust and that everything is fine. Kingy pretty much sums up this on another thread.

I disagree, there will always be those who can adapt to the market/economic climate and still do well. In a business full (excuse the pun) of part timers and those who don't give the same effort as others who rely on the income, this is even more prevelant.

DJ Mitch makes some very good points, and sometimes reality can be scarey demon that wont retreat back into the cupboard no matter how tightly we close our eyes.

My own prediction is that from Mid 2010 things will slowly mprove and everything will be almost back to normal by 2011, but until then 2009 and part of 2010 will be a very difficult period indeed for any business

Again, I'm inclined to disgaree, if DJs are to feel the pinch them it will be towards the end of the year and early next year, when people are booking Weddings for 2010. Weddings for 2009 are largley a done deal, people already have the budgets, they will just want to make sure they're getting the most for their money.. and this is down to the DJ...nothing else!

The UK tends to be last when it comes to anything to do with the economy, so when the U.S has addressed its issues and their economy is recovering followed by parts of Europe then i'll start thinking positively.

Thats completely up to you, but personally I prefer to look at my own figures rather than the scaremongering from the media.

I will end with saying that if you are determined that this year will be a disaster, then I full agree with you that it will, because you will fulfull your own prophecy.

However, if you're more open minded and can accept that there is still money to be made, and ways to get through this crisis then please join me in a great year.

I will be the first to report if I'm wrong! smile icon

  6. So you don't see a light at the end of the tunnel? I'm not an economist, but surely things will get better. With Weddings being booked years in advance that might just provide enough of a buffer to see the recession through... that is of course assuming you do Weddings, but then its very hard to make this job pay if you don't!

Optimist? Yes, I see little point in being anything else!

    Naive? probably!

  7. I voted quiet at the moment, but busier later. December was down on last year, January was up only due to a big payment for an event in March, most of which will be paid out again, so thats artificial.

I've had at least one a week during the quiet months, so not too bad really, I've always had to let the summer subsidise this time of year, so aslong as things tick along and bills are paid I'm happy! I even managed a holiday in January! April is also suprising busy, with 6 weddings, one on a Thursday, and all the Fridays still free for birhdays and the more last minute events.

I'm reasonably confident becuase I have 44 bookings in total for the year so far, 39 of which are Weddings. A few have gone for extras like all-day service or uplighting and I have dates where I'm doubling (and one where I'm tripling) up already, which is much better than this time last year.

The only difference I'm noticing is people are asking more questions and being more careful about who they spend their money with, this can only be good for the quality operator IMO.

  8. How can the rate for men and women be different? Or are they including civil partnerships as well?

Just playing with those figures shows that in one city near to me, there will be 2970 people getting married in the year. Say only 20% want a DJ, with 52 weeks in the year that leaves 10 weddings a week, and thats just in one city.

I have no idea how many DJs are competing for that work, but if you take into account the populations of surrounding towns and villages too then I reckon there must be enough to go round if you're well advertised.

I'm up to 34 confirmed for this year, which is higher than this time last year.

  9. as for the credit card terminal, i wont have access to anyone elses, as i will be a sole trader. Im in talks with a few companies now trying to get the best deal. Normally the best deal is in association with your business bank account

You'd think wouldn't you? I got a quote through my business account (with A&L) and it was more expensive than through someone I'd never dealt with before.. funny thing was, they both used the same 3rd party to handle the CC processing!

The best offer seems to be with streamline, if you join the FSB first you save the £200 setup fee and I'm pretty sure you also don't have a minimum charge each month, aside from rental of the machine.

  10. The M3 Controller is pretty much just an active crossover. So you won't get anymore bass by using it with the F15s. Buy some subs, although you'd have been better off with the F12s and subs to go with them, as F15s will be a bit top heavy ontop of subs.

  11. Well your profit margin determines how much of your turnover goes on expenses, and therefore you can work out how much VAT you could have claimed on those expenses, had you have been registered. That's the relevance.

Its hard to work out for me personally, since I also put other DJs out and do hire, uplighting etc too. Just looking at the figures for gigs I did myself, against expenses (excluding payments to other DJs) it's around 45-50% profit.. but then those expenses should be proportioned amongst the other services, which is hard to do.

So its not totally accurate or representative of what other DJs might be achieiving, however I've read several articles on self employment and they all seem to suggest that 33% is considered a good margin, with the rest going on your expenses.

If I could claim back 15% of that 50-55% expenses during the year, plus VAT back on my van (bought within the last three years) and other big equipment purchases, that would offset the intial expense of VAT registering.

There will be a point where you still end up making more money once registering, trying to stick below the threshold is just going to limit your earning potential.

  12. Since the fees received by the DJ is almost all for his services, there is very little he can offset against his VAT liabilities, no VAT can be recovered on fuel, which is probably the biggest outlay for mobile jocks, so you are left with repairs and servicing, advertising, 'work' clothes and the 15% on any new equipment you may buy.

I disagree.. I run at about 40% profit margin which is fairly typical for anyone who's self employed. That's a hell of alot of VAT I could claim back on my expenses. And of course there's VAT on fuel, why do you think garages offer you a VAT receipt?

I'm not saying everyone would be better off VAT registering by any means, I just don't think it's quite as crippling as you make out. For a start did you know you can claim the VAT back on any assets bought within the last three years if you're still using them?

  13. I'd have issued a £250 refund, took a month off and gone to somewhere tropical :D

A self employed DJ with a turnover of £67,100 pa, who follows the letter of the law and registers for VAT, will be around £10,000 a year worse off than a similar DJ who stops working when his turnover reaches £66,900. Personally I'd rather swim in a sewer than get myself in the grip of the VAT man again.

Not if you pass the VAT onto your customers and if your customers are mainly hotels, agents and event companies then they'll be VAT registered themseleves so the increase will make no difference. So it needn't be as expensive as you make out. Plus you have to take into account the VAT you save on your expenses.
