  1. Hard one, I wouldn't have done the extra half hour without being given the extra £15 on the night.. its hardly difficult for them to get that kind of money together. First of all send them an invoice recorded delivery for the money owed with a covering letter explaining your right to start charging interest after 30 days. Regarding the upcoming booking, how long has it been since you sent them the contact? Mine says that the booking will only be held for 14 days to allow time for the contract to be returned. Given their attitude thus far, I wouldn't want to take another booking from
  2. I have mixed views, my experience with both is as follows. Photo/Video Projection - I use a projector and 60" screen and I've had just 3 bookings for this in about 6 months, I only charge an additional £75 for it. Total investment was just over £300, plus almost £200 for music videos (which I'm still building up). The problem I've found, is it appeals mainly to the younger end of the market (18ths, 21st etc.) I always offer this as an add-on when responding to enquiries for these type of events, they usually choke at my starting rate let alone any extras! I've not had a great up
  3. The MP3/CD etc. is a physical copy though, the singers performance is only sound waves heard by a particular audience on a night, surely thats the difference? The arguments about this thing are getting so boring, it seems some people won't rest until they've thought up every possible way to avoid buying it, or claim its unfair. When instead, we could be activley using this as a tool (along with PLI & PAT, which aren't even legal requirments) to bring some kind of regulation to this industry.
  4. Well thats most of my Indie tracks that I play, although I'd have thought "Love Cats", "Close to me" or even "Friday I'm in love" would be better recognised tracks by The Cure. A few more I often play - Stereo MC's - Step it up EMF - Unbeleivable EMF, Reeves & Mortimer - I'm a beleiver Wonderstuff, Reeves & Mortimer - Dizzy Bluetones - Slight Return / Marmalade Johnson Ocean Colour Scene - The day we caught the train Smashmouth - Walking on the sun Dandy Warhols - Bohemian like you Kula Shaker - Hush Dodgy - Stayin' out for the summer, Good enough
  5. I wouldn't refund anything either. Just explain that you've scheduled your weekend around a late finish (i.e. you can't do an early gig/hire/shopping run the next day) so it still has to be paid for.
  6. Thats good for people who use Zoom discs only, but CD+G downloads cost around £2 each, whereas the ProDub is a maximum of 60p per track, so if you already have a substantial collection then the ProDub is the most economical surely? I think I may invest in the Zoom starter collections they do through Images. Do you have an official statement from them that could be used to prove legitimacy infront of an inspector?
  7. My car insurance quote just came through and they offer breakdown cover along with the insurance which is nice I don't think the van had the same thing though, so will probably still have to renew my AA, though you get 10% off as a NADJ member, so that'll save a bit.
  8. Had a wedding last night, really good night with a really wide range of music and the venue took some cards to recomend me :) Then today I had to be up at 7am to drop off a PA hire in alvechurch. Had a wedding at my hotel res tonight but that cancelled, but will still be paid and have 3 other DJs out doing Weddings, so not a bad weekend all in all.
  9. But everyones definition of a "fair price" is different. Personally, I think what we do is worth way more than a Chocolate Fountain, Hiring a toilet block or a dancefloor etc. yet these services are nearly always far more expensive than DJs. Is it really an "inflated price" by trying to be more realistic and make a living from DJing, like the above mentioned companies all manage to.
  10. I use both. I have two Gold listings on UK Disco, one in West Midlands, the other in South West, as I'm on the Worcs/Glos border. They pay for themseleves a few times over in terms of bookings generated, but also work wonder for your search engine ranking! Within a week of bagging Gold in South West, my website shot up the rankings and now appears on the first page for most of my target terms! Of course, you do need to have a well optimised site in the first place of course! GoodParty, I use occasionaly to fill dates in the quiet months. I've spent about £30 in the past and took jus
  11. Refer them to venue management and explain that there's a hefty fine If I should play beyond the licensed hours*. *Doesn't necessarily have to be true!
  12. There's nothing I'd object to, although it does read a bit too casual for a contract in my opinion.
  13. It very much depends on the controller, although for most of them the principles are the same as using a dual CD deck and mixer.
  14. Saturday Night Fever, Dirty Dancing, Commitments, Grease all spring to mind. And High School Musical, Hannah Montana, Step Up, Hairspray for kids parties.
  15. I agree with Kingy, a more appropriate analogy would be comparing it to prices for a holiday. Why is is cheaper in February than July? Is the airline doing less work? The hotel? etc. I charge the same in December as I do in May - September, other months are off-peak so I discount slightly.
  16. I would guess that the £10.50 already has tax & NI taken out of it, as it sounds like they're employing DJs on PAYE in which case, the employer is responsible for Tax & NI. Even still, even adding the tax back on, we're still talking just over £100
  17. I've also had issues. I replied to a school prom enquiry a while ago now, with a fairly large budget (should have rung warning bells!) and received a reply from what sounded like a management company, so I suspect there wasn't even a real event. I've also seen fairly similar worded enquiries for 18ths / 21sts with £500-700 budgets... so I steer clear of these. I've had my moneys worth from them, but haven't seen anything thats taken my fancy recently on dates that I'm free so haven't topped up my account on there.
  18. That's not entirely accurate. My bins are rated at 600w, but thats RMS.. i'm actually running 2k into the pair and they cope amicably, so I'm actually producing 2k, not 1.2k. Remember RMS is just a rating based on feeding a test signal in, when you're playing actual music you can acheive greater volume and good speakers will hold up even above their RMS rating. The norm is to rate a PA system on the amp output. You could have a 4kw system using 2 x 500w speakers.. yes, they'd distort like mad and wouldn't last long.. but they'd still produce 4kw before they burst into flames tongue out i
  19. Yep I agree with Paul. It does depend on the market that you target, I can't see the big marquee/country house weddings being affected!
  20. Cleopatra... coming at ya! Thats the one.
  21. The Jacksons just seem to be one of those groups that people of all ages know, usually through parents/relatives. It was also covered by a girl band about 5-6 years ago, their name escapes me however.
  22. I can't speak for all shows, but certainley DJ Show North and the NADJ Agm/Tradeshow (ok, this does raise awarness of the association, but as its a registered charity for the good of the industry you can hardly begrudge us that :) ) are organised by people who give their time for free to put on things like this. If you want something in the South West, then there's your answer!
  23. I have a similar local gig that I do for £450. Could get alot more elsewhere, and last year I even gave out gigs to two other DJs that were more money, however I like doing this venue and have a bed for the night round the corner and can have a drink, so suits me better.
  24. To find their way to venues perhaps? Website isn't too bad. Not sure what this discussion is in aid of really? It's just someone attempting to grow their business, best of luck to them.
