  1. To update you all. I am now PAT tested :-) - I found a friend of a friend who agreed to do it free. He spend a day testing all the stuff and produced a nice certificate. The only things that failed were due to some cosmetic issues and they were soon fixed. He even fixed a light that had broken and was continually blowing the fuse.
  2. what did this mean - "£3/£100, or £30/£1000 or £300/£10000" - sorry if looking a bit thick :-( - i assume £300 for £10000 of cover. But this seems pricey. E&L are cheaper, MusicGuard.co.uk are about the same. E&L insure the CDs while MusicGaurd don't (unless you lose them all).
  3. www.traxsmanafacturers.co.uk - uk makers of light boxes are having a closing down sale this week - so is the light box dead - i stopped using mine about 2 years ago.
  4. Free newspapers are regarded as wastebin fodder but that doesn't stop people advertising in them. I don't dictate what a customer should do with my business cards, if they choose to scribble all over it thats fine. And a blank back gives me room to scribble quotes etc. on the back before giving it to them. If my advert reaches more people through passed on cards then that can only be good for me. I assume it is, like everything, a matter of personal taste - to say one is better than the other is arguable. I do however like the vistaprint offer of printing a calendar on the back of the
  5. Thats interesting advice. I would however prefer to only print on one side exactly for that reason. My cards get spread around because i and other use them to jot numbers down on the reverse to give to people, and they in turn use them as scaps of paper to give to others etc. You can be sure if you ask for a number or something and the person thumbles around for a scrap of paper to write it on, pulls out a business card and uses that, you will allways turn the card over just out of curiosity to see what business it is for. And thus that card, and advert has reached another stranger. Pers
  6. Thanks for the complements on the website - i was just thinking of redoing it all this year to something a little more standard and boring. I do get complaints from people that bits don't work due to javascript compatibilities between different version of IE (and i think it only works on IE lol) The galleries are also well out of date :-( And yes i did design and code it myself - i am a software engineer and web designer and that is my main profession, the disco is just a hobby and was started as a way to combine my interest in electronic engineering and music. I the early days I built a
  7. I think depends on the type of foam. the machine i tried was the Source Snow machine and its foam was litteral the same as bubble bath foam - wet and very slippy. However i have also used party foam in a can and it was excellant - looked like a can of shaving foam with out the scents - but it dried to a white powder which just disappeared - no mess and not slippery. It was good also due to being in a can it could be taken into the croud and squirted like silly string. Kids loved to take the cans and run round with it thenselves. Total non toxic, no slippery fun with no mess after. Unfortuanate
  8. Of course the big thing now is that they are all asking for 'Foam or Snow machines' - personally i try to talk them out of it due to the mess. The bubble machines make the floor slippy enough, Foam is even worse. I have a friend who does Foam parties in night clubs etc, he has to put wood shavings down on the dance floor, steps etc, to absorb the foam so the floor doesn't get to slippy. Its a right mess to clean up - but the clubs don't mind - they have cleaning companies that come in ! lol
  9. Most of my work is in Somerset or East Devon. No school has ever asked for anything not to be used. Occasionaly (very) have private bookings ask for something not to be used. In the most instances the first question they ask when making a booking enquiry s 'Ah i see you advert says you have smoke and bubbles - do i have to pay more for those or is it included in the price'. It sometimes drives me mad when people ring me up to do a party for their 5yo kid just cause they want a bubble machine. They would be better of getting a ghetto blaster in the corner and buying a bubble machine thems
  10. Hi to all from TNT Disco My name is Nick and I run TNT Disco with the aid of a merry band of helpers. The disco is based out of Wellington, which is near Taunton in Somerset, England. We are a small affair with an annual turnover of about £4k per year. The disco is run more as a hobby than a business and therefore we aim not to make a profit. Nick
  11. Obviously different areas of the country work differently - we are always asked for the smoke machine and bubble machines - I think we have only been asked not to use them once. Parents booking their kids parties seem to pick up on this in our YP advert and it appears they book us over the competition because we offer them. I have never had any asthma sufferer complain about the smoke machine, I even have a regular helper who suffers from asthma and he says it doesn't effect him. I have has more requests not to use strobe lighting than not to use smoke. We suffer from kids inhaling
  12. most of my discos are for children at schools and village halls. they all request smoke :-) Only one of the schools I have performed in had smoke detectors in the main hall, mainly so they can hold these type of events. The one that did have it was the local public school and they didn't realise it, asked us to use smoke and we set it off. Resulting in the whole school and all the boarding houses (some 100s of yards away on the other side of a main road) being trooped out on to the playing fields and waiting for the fire brigade to come and reset the alarm. We were very embarrassed but not
  13. Sounds interesting. Can you email me an application form to nick@tntdisco.co.uk :-) I would need info on your PLI insurers as well as i onlu have 1mill PLI via musicguard.co.uk Nick
  14. This is an interesting thread, for the past 10 years i have only been insured SDP while transporting my gear to discos. It is not a profession, its a hobby. It is not my job, its a hobby. Therefore as a hobby i regarded it as Pleasure. However this year on renewing my car insurance via my broker i enquired how much extra it cost to alter it to include business us. To my suprise it was on a around £40 more - so i did it. At no time did they ask for what business it would be used in - so i didn't think to tell them. Maybe after reading this thread i should ring my insurers and check the th
  15. my kit has been stored as is, in its trailer, in the garage for over 8 years and i have never once had a problem with damp speaker cones. when i recently moved house i noticed that the cds were always moist with condensation and the screws etc on equipment were going rusty where the paint had been scratched off. so i invested £100 in dehumidifier which runs on a timer (2 hours on 2 hours off) and produces about 5 litres of water every couple of days. I can only suspect that at my last garage i had a chest freezer with acted like the dehumidifier via its condensing elements. Occasional
