  1. Hi all.

I'm a mobile DJ with a pretty basic setup. 2 speakers. 1 amp. Vinyl decks. Few lights. I'm getting quite a few gigs here and there. It's only my hobby really so not spent loads on equipment (although dread to think how much I've spent on vinyl!).

However, I don't think I'm getting the most out of my speakers. I don't believe my amp is powerful enough for the speakers (I bought amp and speakers as part of a DJ package a couple of years back). I find that my amp starts 'clipping' at what I consider to be a relatively low volume. And there's always that one person that says 'turn it up mate'...As much as I'd love to oblige I'm restricted by having to keep an eye on those dreaded red LEDs on the amp!

I have a pair of passive speakers. Each has the following ratings:

    400 watts RMS.

    800 watts max.

    8 ohms.

    90dB sensitivity.

My current amp delivers a max 200 watts to each channel (or each speaker) at 8 ohms (it doesn't seem to have an RMS rating that I can see).

If I understand it right, this means my speakers are only getting 200 watts each delivered to them, and yet the RMS is double that (400).

So, my question to you is...what amp spec should I look for that would allow me to get my speakers working at 400 RMS each? And maybe more importantly, have I actually understood the basic concepts of amps and speakers??

Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

    Pete.

  2. Hi guys.

You may have seen my introductory post the other day. If not, I am basically in the process of getting the equipment together to do some mobile DJ'ing (my business cards arrived today - excited!).

I certainly can't host big events (yet) but can do house parties or office parties on my own. My question to you guys is: how much should I charge people if they want me to play at their party? I've absolutely no idea when it comes to this - £20? £50? £100?? Should I charge by the hour (if they just want me to play for a couple of hours at the end of the evening or something)? Or a fixed cost?

To give you some context, I have only done a couple of gigs at a local pub so far, and didn't get paid for these (I opened the night both times, and all the money went to the main 3 DJ's, who to be fair used alot of their own equipment and did all of the organising - I just turned up with my 2 turntables and a few records).

Also, someone I know may want me to play the last hour of their wedding reception in a few months, once the live band have finished. Again, what should I charge??

    Thanks all.

  3. Hi all. Signed up to this forum a couple of days ago in the hope of getting some advice/guidance from all you fellow DJs out there. Let me introduce myself:

My name is Pete (DJ name is Kick Ass). While not brand new to DJ'ing (I've had my Numark Direct Drive decks for about 12 years!) it's only been the last couple of years when I've started to properly "learn the art" of being a DJ. I've been quite lucky in that my brother's friend organises regular DJ nights at a local pub, and have done a couple of DJ sets there (first one was ok, second was much better!). Competition for spots is high, so only get 1 gig a year though.

The music I DJ'd at those events was my true love: 90's happy hardcore! I also have many other records covering 90's dance, piano classics, rave, italian house, and old skool. All 90's and all awesome!

I'm now in the process of buying some equipment so I can do some mobile DJ'ing. Business card nearly finalised!

I'd be interested to hear from DJs with similar music tastes who maybe need extra DJ's for events or might want a DJ such as myself to play at a party, but also to get help/advice from those in a similar position.

    Cheers for reading.
