  1. Ian Stewart and Eskie have posted here in the past about venues and corporate customers who insist on S&H Booths. Eskie hasn't posted on here lately but Ian posts occasionally. I wonder how long that would last on the road! But it would look cool in a funky bachelor pad! (Note the two channel mixer for the six sources!) But I bet it takes ages to put together and connect your kit up. - I prefer a coffin with everything connected up and ready to go. Just sit it on a stand, connect to mains and amp rack. Job done. AAAHHhhhhh! Not my cup of tea I'm afraid. (Very afraid!) Alt
  2. I've asked this on another forum, but I'm keen to get the opinions of the esteemed members here: I'm thinking of taking the plunge and getting an S&H Starcloth Booth. I've used S & H Starcloth Booth's several times – they look great and are of the quality I want, but: 1) They only just fitted in my main disco vehicle, with lots of awkward maneuvering, and would only fit in my back-up vehicle with a corner sticking a couple of inches out of an open window! (I now use a larger vehicle, but want to still be able to fit gear in more "normal" size cars to give me back-up opti
  3. That certainly wasn't my intention. I am a fan of both Pioneer and Denon and rate both highly. For many years I used only Pioneer, but now I use a mixture of both Denon (DN-HS5500) & Pioneer (DJM-800). I was only trying to make the point that the Denon forum is very good. Not true. I'm not one to rant. Yet I did have a post asking about the difference in Cueing and Loops between a Pioneer & Denon product deleted as the forum was "only for discussion of Pioneer products". If I've offended anyone, I apologize. I was about to reply on this, but Big MC Ben has beaten me
  4. Hi Easy, Try the Denon forum: www.denondjforums.com Loads of helpful people there who are bound to be able to answer your questions. (By using the search function, you may find your question has been asked and answered already.) They are very friendly and you won't get deleted if you dare mention any competing products, like you would on the Pioneer forums. Alternatively Gary on this forum is a Denon rep. You could try PM'ing him.
  5. It would be interesting to confirm how many, and what type of lights. For 12 lights, that works out at £50 a light - enough to buy average quality LED PAR Cans, DMX cables, and still have something left to cover the three hours or more of labour needed to set up and take down. But as said before 4 lights per room may not be enough unless they are small rooms, or they are using something better than a low cost LED PAR Can.
  6. I would also say LED Bars or PAR Cans on a DMX controller, but Dukesy says so it may be they they are setting them on an internal slow colour change, with no DMX connection. (I can't vouch for PAR Can's but my AVR LED Bars will stay synchronised for over 12 hours on their internal slow colour change.)
  7. Jenx gives some good advice above. Maybe I've spent too much time in London, but I would go overboard on security: Insist on ID from everyone - and maybe record this (photocopy, digitally photograph, or just write down the details on entry). and/or a metal detector. Get some "under cover agents" (ie teenagers you know) to mingle and keep an eye on things, informing you or security if they see anything happening. (Bullying, or even drug use could be going on in those dark corners.) But stress to not intervene, just inform security. (By phone may be better so that they are not
  8. None of the above. If the option where there I would vote "When I feel I'm worth more". This may be after changes to improve my service, improvements in my performance (eg new skills learnt), or new equipment that I feel makes my show worth more.
  9. I Voted 20, as that is how many I've purchased in the past year. Where ever possible I still buy CD's, including lots of CD singles. But the increasing difficulty in getting hold of CD singles means that I now end up buying many albums just for 1 track, and as a very last resort I buy the download if there is no way I can find the track on CD.
  10. Helicopters! I used to have two of them. 4 way scanners! I had a pair of those two. Ahh, memory lane! But whilst great effects at the time, they didn't do much - either on or off / moving or stationary - no DMX in those days - and they were very heavy. A modern scanner or barrel DMX effect can do everything they did, as well also having gobos, control of colours, strobing, brighter beams, etc, for the same money (my Helicopters were around £200 each in the 80's) and less weight. Getting back to the subject of the thread: I never had any light boxes, but it's hard to bea
  11. I don't charge more because it's a wedding, but I do charge more if more work is involved, and generally for weddings there is. There's one example. I would imagine that you would now need to be set up earlier before the wedding breakfast (which they probably weren't having before)? Background music during this? Do they now need a microphone for the speeches? Discuss all these things with her and quote her a new price. (I expect they are now having other services that they wouldn't of have for the 40th, such as flowers, etc.) If she still only wants you to turn up for the same number o
  12. Hi All, I brought four tickets to see the legendary Maze featuring Frankie Beverly live in concert at the Hammersmith Apollo on Sunday night. Not bad seats either, only 5 rows back from the front of the circle/balcony. But I later brought even better tickets for their Friday night in Croydon (second row from the stage). We have a couple of friends who may or may not still want to go on Sunday, so does anyone want either two or four tickets to see Maze on Sunday? Possibly the greatest band in the world. It's around a decade since they were last here, and it will be a long ti
  13. Is there a sound limiter there? I once did Floyd's Bar there, which had a limiter set very low.
  14. Thanks Gary, I've just had a look over there: I'd decribe it more as a question. But I won't be able to try non D-sync answer until next weekend as I'm currently sat in a travel lodge.
  15. So is it only that Denon haven't tested a larger than 1TB drive, or is the DN-HS5500 designed to only go up to 1TB? Thanks, I didn't realise that the Hotlist worked across all drives (as I am currently only playing at home with a single 1TB drive). I only tried using the Hotlist for the first time a few days ago, but can't seem to get it to work properly (I've posted on the Denon forum).
  16. Yes, the Denon players will format a hard drive to FAT32.
  17. I'm certainly not a computer expert, but here's what I believe is the case: NTFS is a Microsoft format. Any manufaturer also has to pay Microsoft if they want to use it. FAT32 is a universal format reconised by both Windows and Apple Mac's and virtually every other product that uses a hard drive.
  18. Well I'm using a 1TB at the moment, but it's now full, so I am waiting for larger single drives to come out. Is 1TB a technical format limit? ie will larger than 1TB single drives have to use a new format? Every couple of years I've seen drive capacities double, so I'm hoping that it's only a matter of time before we see single 1.5TB or larger drives. No. I would have prefered to use FLAC as I had spent a couple of years ripping to it in preperation. But Denon doesn't support FLAC - only mp3 and WAV. So I had to uncompress my FAC collection to WAV.
  19. Hi Gary, I don't remember hearing that 1TB was the limit on external disc size. Are you sure of this? As I'm ripping waves, I was planning on using a single 1.5 or 2TB drive so that I don't have to remember which track are on which drive, or have to search each drive separately.
  20. Overall I think this is a great list containing many popular tracks. I don't think there's anyone here who doesn't play the top three often. But I do agree that it is only the view of a narrow selection of people. The suprise for me is seeing Strings Of Life at number 4. Although a great track, I wouldn't have expected it to be more popular amongst Radio 2 listeners than the tracks below it. It makes me think I should try and play it more often.
  21. Exact Audio Copy lets you choose to rip CD's as individual tracks, or as an "Image" - basically one long file (mp3 or wav) with a separate text table of contents listing the track marker positions (which some burners can use to recreate a copy CD). It's one of the best rippers out there and it's free. However I use this method: It has the advantage that you can quickly jump to any track to mix in at that point and use the display to know where you are in a mix.
  22. Thanks for the replys guys! The Andrews Sisters had come to mind, but I wasn't sure if that was to early, so thanks for the confirmation. I did mix the Andrews Sisters out of Candyman at an event last year, so I know they go well together. I'll probably try it the way around you suggest, as it would be a good bridge back into more modern music. Thanks for the suggestions. As I have quite a few of those, I'll print this list off in case they end up wanting quite a few tunes. I guess the earliest tracks are the most authentic. Something that I don't have. I'll have in inves
  23. I see myself as a DJ. For me it's all about the music, and it's the music that does the entertaining. But I maximise this by using my experience and judgement to choose the music that will best entertain the guests within the brief given by the client (eg "no Cheese", "mainly swing and jazz" or "R&B, 80's Soul & 70's Funk" to summarise some recent ones). Like Andy above, I don't consider myself to be a personality DJ. The mic is just a tool for required announcements, or to encourage the guests to enjoy themselves more. I suspect my clients would also consider me to be a DJ,
  24. Giving Amy the benefit of the doubt, it is not possible that she was still choosing the tunes, but due to the fact that she is a singer and not exactly likely to be slick at mixing, that a DJ was employed to do that part for her?
  25. Hi all, I've just had a customer ask if I can play "something to Jitterbug to" for some relatives who Jitterbug, at a wedding in a few weeks. As far I know the Jitterbug is pre-rock and roll 40's / 50's. Can anyone suggest a handfull of Jitterbug classics. If someone can point me in the right direction, it may be something I already have.
