We still have a valid license so I took the opportunity to upgrade the Forum Software from V3.4.7 to V4.5.3.
For the first time in ten years..
Â
Excellent!
Â

Has someone been tweaking/tidying up the layout of this forum?!
-
Â
ÂNobody has said Happy 2020 yet.........probably for the best!
Â
I was thinking of posting on here but never did.
Â
My last disco was in January (which is unusual as I don't normally have any or have very few gigs in January and February after Christmas and New Year).
Â
I'm glad it did happen as that will very likely be my only one this year.
Â
All others have been cancelled or postponed until 2021 (and at this rate, it seems even that is pushing it).
Â
That is, except one wedding which was due to take place summer this year. They postponed it until the end of October. I said fine blah blah blah knowing they should postpone it longer.
Â
I'm now waiting for the call saying they have to postpone it yet again!
Â
At this stage, I have a total of three discos for next year, and the one above I'm waiting to hear back on.
Â
I can't see the mobile disco trade getting back to being anywhere near busy again; ever.
Â
Hope things are as well as they can be for anyone reading this.
Â
Oliver.

Happy 2019 to all!
-
Indeed - thanks for keeping this site online, Chris.
-
-
Well done Chris for keeping it online.
Â
I don't see the forum as having closed its doors as you can still post.
Â
I think it's more that it was 'upgrade in progress' for ages and people were driven away.
-
I am glad it does stay online.
Â
Does make you wonder though who is covering the costs and how long it will last.
-
Chris Pointon posted a reply here. It seems to have been removed...
-
Did you? How come?
-
So how have 12 years treated you? Still the same avatar?
Â
Mine is and that hound is now 12 yrs old
Â
Think I must have missed the long downtime
Â
Still cracking on with discos etc.
Â
Yes - the same avatar. Not much point changing it now!
Â
I wonder who else visits here from time to time? I only came by through chance.
Â
There are some useful old topics on here. Some no longer relevant due to technology changes etc, but most will be valid still.
-
The problem was that years ago, this forum was down for a very long time.
Â
By which time, people lost interest and likely moved on to other forums or social media etc.
Â
This was a great forum in 2004/2005/around that time.

I have some Samson LS2 speaker stands (see here: Stands).
Â
On the top pole is a bit of plastic that converts the stands from 25mm to the more common 35mm top hat fitting.
Â
I have lost one of the bits of plastic.
Â
I have emailed Samson but nothing back yet, and can't find anywhere online to buy them.
Â
Any ideas?
Â
Thanks.

I have found searching for 'slider knob' (oo-er) or similar is helping - still not quite there.
Â
Behringer wanted about £40 for the part (including shipping and VAT). No thanks.
Â
I have also tried plastic moulding companies to see if they could make a copy of an existing button (no problem) but of course there is a minimum order of about 1000 for these companies so I have ruled that out.
Â
Starting to get stuck..
-
Cheers guys.
Â
I have gone with the egg crate foam option which arrived today.
Â
I feel it won't be enough so may have to angle the foam.
Â
We'll see how it goes!
-
I need a control knob which is missing from my Behringer FBQ1502.
Â
I have tried contacting them several times to no avail.
Â
Any advice?
-
Hello.
Â
I use four speakers - two of which some gear is put on, but the other two are as is/bare with nothing on top.
Â
As you would expect, many beer/wine glasses/whatever get put on them every week, empty and full.
Â
I don't always have time to move the full ones quickly.
Â
There has never been a bad spillage but that isn't the point.
Â
Stands are not an option as these speakers are old and heavy.
Â
If someone were to knock them over they would feel it and being heavy, are difficult to lift onto stands.
Â
Also, placing lights on there won't worry - just something else guests FOH can touch/fiddle with.
Â
Feel free to be creative here as I am good at DIY.
Â
So far, I have:
Â
* Put some kind of triangle structure on top of them. Something removable but fixed with velcro (speakers are carpeted so this is not a problem). Perhaps something made out of wood. You can't put glasses on a triangle.
Â
* Use strong, corrugated cardboard.
Â
* Soft Foam perhaps/likely with corrugation.
Â
Any more ideas?
Â
I've yet to think of anything which totally stands out and doesn't look too weird.
Â
Actually, looking weird isn't that much of an issue.
Â
Perhaps I could make this into something the really stands out and looks unique, but classy...
Â

This was and indeed is a great forum and it is brilliant to have it back.
Â
So what actually happened and why was it 'down' for so long?
Â
I think it may take quite a while for people to discover it is back and for posts to come in etc...
-
test
Â
So, is this forum up and running again?
Â
What happened to it etc etc etc?
-
Not strictly DJ-related, but I have a 2011 diary for sale with penguins on the front!
Â
Very nice and A5ish size.
Â
Hardback.
Â
Hopefully we all have diaries but who knows.....
Â
£1.25 + P&P if anyone is at all interested.

I have my first of many, many weddings of the year in Christchurch this evening.
Â
Bit of a trek to get into the hall, and a few steps.
Â
Parking was a bit bad last time too. However, as long as I can get stuff without too much fuss then all will be well.
Â
Doesn't matter so much when packing away. Finish at 23:00 too so should be plenty of time at the end to get things loaded.
-
Depends on the event mostly. Some talking needed, yes.
Â
Not too much - people want to hear tracks not some stranger talking all the time.
Â
Especially true at things like 18th's/21st's - guests want to hear tunes.
Â
With regards to the disco vs jukebox - I have added my comments (don't wish to drift off topic too much though).
Â
Disco/DJ:
Â
* Plays at set volume, often too loud for some guests - not always true at all
* Starts at fixed time and often ends at the very time when the party is at its peak - many will play longer (obviously for an increased fee but will do it)
* Will not accept prior play-lists - not always true
* Will not have all requests - probably true but who knows! A jukebox won't have them all either
* Will often be a factor in older guests deciding to leave early - maybe
Â
Juke Box:
Â
* Plays at the volume you prefer and can be adjusted accordingly or even turned off - why bother hiring it if you want to turn it off? (!). Although this could mean for speeches (of which a jukebox unless supplied with a PA and mic won't have a mic). A DJ could stop tracks seemlessly and do speeches etc.
* Is available for up to twelve hours and only stops when you pull the plug out! No restriction on time - so are most DJs
* Plays only those songs you and your guests have asked for in advance and in the order you want - DJs can do this
* Your play-list will include songs requested by every age group therefore everyone will want to stay and listen to the music! DJs can do this
* Your Juke Box package can include the optional extras provided by a disco – lighting, fog machine, bubble machine and microphone - ahhhhh, see my comments on speeches above. By the time you've paid for all this, it will in some areas come to the same price as a DJ.
Â
What if the gear breaks down? Backups supplied. I think not.
Â
There are many arguments both sides (jukebox and DJ) for and against as we know - it is for another topic which someone has probably started long ago..
-
Varies every time.
Â
Some times another slow track (or another two slow tracks), maybe something fast, the Bridge & Groom may have requested something, could be a Bride & Father of the Bride dance, may stop after the first dance for dinner and pick up later.
Â
I have to look at the crowd and choose (unless a request has been made).
-
Bit lame really, crowd not that interested other than the midnight celebrations.
Â
Interesting, as this was one of the 'weakest' parts of the night for me. Not much of a cheer. Saying that, Auld Lan Syne was fantastic, with everyone in a circle singing. Ran out of space almost!
Â
On that note, the first words spoken to me in 2011 were buy a 'guest' and were along the lines of "are you going to F****** get on with it this year or next?".
Â
Lovely.
Â
I said "next year" and ignored him which shut him up.
Â
He said the above as it was taking a minute and a half (wow, so loooong) to get everyone in a circle. Well, there were about 70 people there. Oh well.
Â
once again not one person even bothered to acknowldege me at midnight - tis a lonely job at times!Â
Same here, but didn't expect it. Would have been nice.
Â
Some of the staff said it when I said goodbye though.
