  1. Ok, so what about cabs where the driver orientation is such that it could be in any position when being used regularly? I'm surprised by that response from Mackie really
  2. About the only reason for not transporting or storing speakers face up is the danger of stuff (liquids, small children, etc) falling into them. I'd have thought that transorting speakers in the normal upright position would be worst if you're worried about bumps, especially with pressed chassis drivers. But even then you'd have a hard job shifting the magnets. Recently i've heard of some drivers in horns with very small rear chambers (Ciare 12.00) using magnets stuck on with adhesives, where the magnets have shifted due to them being moved about straight after being driven very hard
  3. Scanners only really come into their own when you've either got some very good ones (wide angle optics, rotating gobos, prisms, etc) or when you use at least 4 of them. Other wise you're better off with some FX lighting like gobo flowers, scanning flowers (a nice compromise) or any multibeam effect with good coverage
  4. Using speakes that have tighter dispersion patterns can help reduce reverberations, by limiting how much actual sound escapes into the rest of the room. Have speakers up high, focussed in and down on the dancefloor means that none will have the opportunity to reflect off of the roof, and assuming there are dancers, will mostly be absorbed by people. Also, don't try to EQ your system with an empty room, the acoustics will change significantly once you get a few people in there, and require resetting anyway.
  5. The Wii does look like a fantastic machine, certainly the console i'd get if i wanted a new one, or had the time to use it. Unfortunately, my girlfriend introduced me to World of Warcraft a year or so back, and its all we ever play now. With the latest expansion coming out on tuesday my time for doing anything other than work and WoW will be minimal i suspect......
  6. EV, JBL, etc all make different ranges of speakers for different budgets. JBL make some fantastic sounding touring rigs but also make crap like the Eon 15's. Likewise EV make some great systems for the pro market, but also some real poopers. They sell on the name of their good stuff, to people that can't afford to buy it. You'd be amazed at how much better a soundsystem sounds when you paint it blue and stick a Turbosound badge on it......
  7. This has to be purely a cost cutting exercise on the part of the manufacturer. The wiring out of phase is a common one, as the path of the horn is closer to 180deg out of phase compared to a baffle loaded driver in most cases. Your mids will play everything thats given to them, not just up to 4.5khz as there is no lowpass filter. Do you not find that vocals, sound absolutely horrible from the 15" driver? I got sent a pair of 3k6 passive crossovers by mistake for my last set of 15"+1" mid tops. The vocals were noticeably horrible, even cut at that frequency. 2k is about the limit for
  8. So you're saying that the midrange driver gets a full range signal then? (or at least a 200hz upwards signal?) I'd say thats fairly unusual, as most passive mid/top cabs will have the mid and top both running off the crossover. If your hi end is on a horn i'd think that there would be phasing issues between the output of the tweeter and high output of the mid driver. I wouldn't have thought it would sound too nice up past about 3khz either.
  9. In the truest sense then, my system is 5 way active (crossover) using 3 stereo pairs and 2 mono crossover channels, and 12 channels of amps. *waves willy* :P @ukhero - the correct term for your speakers would be self-powered active boxes. If they had a single amp running through a passive crossover then they'd be self-powered passive (which is bloody confusing to people really). I just think its easier nowadays (as the terms have been misappropriated and adopted into regular talk on the subject) to state whether you're referring to the crossover setup or the amp setup. Not a
  10. I know of so many people who've gone out and bought Sennheiser headphones from lower down the range, because they see the same brand as people using HD25. Most quickly find that for DJ work none of them compare at all. If you are about to spend £80 PLEASE spend the extra and buy the HD25. There may be other good headphones from other manufacturers but i'm yet to meet someone who owns HD25's who doesn't love them and own them for a long time..... My current pair have outlasted my 5 previous pairs put together (Denon, Audio-technica, etc)
  11. [discalaimer]I'm drunk, its late[/disclaimer] I work for a local authority, producing performance figures for national returns. The guidlines are open to individual interpretation by each authority, and additional funding awarded based on good performance. Peer comparison of 'bean counting' is not sufficient to accurately measure what the government might consider 'good performance' Good performance can be 'doctored' whilst the 'client' can still receive bad service. By 2008 new 'performance' indicators (in conjunction with PCT's) will be in effect which will (hopefully) r
  12. Depends on if you ever want to go bigger. The concept of 'less wires' becomes 'more wires' once you get over a certain amount of cabs. Each cab requires both power AND signal. At least with 8 boxes you only have to run 8 signal max.
  13. One of the biggest problems that backline causes is that you have no control over it. Whilst i can spend 1hr time aligning the main PA, as soon as you have lead, rythmn and bass guitar rigs on stage, 5 metres behind the FoH stacks you have instant muddying of each of those instruments (if DI'ed or mic'ed off the amps through the main PA). Finding the right passband for the vox and backing vox and using a decent (read: nice sounding) compressor can make even the lowliest of vocal PA's really stand out without caning the amps or speakers. Whilst you lose the musicality and dynamic range, u
  14. Yep, those 'E' heads that keep breaking into my house and hugging me all night are a proper pain in the neck.... Unfortunately this country falls foul of poor research and ill informed governmental officials (often driven by media hype) when classifications of certain (not all) substances were made and unfortunately steadfastly refuse to hold their hands up to the fact.
  15. I'm just curious why someone would want to hire a 1000k vocal PA? Also, is that the Agincourt in Camberley? oooh many fridays and saturdays spent in there in the late 80's/early 90's....
  16. I simply don't do dry hire unless its to other soundmen. I'd say 31 band EQ's on mons would be better for notching problem frequencies also. Think of compression too, vocals and kick drums at a minimum and will really help to bring out the sounds without caning the limiters/clips on your amps. The amount of equipment needed for bands is massive compared to hiring for DJ's and yet bands generally don't like to pay the money (whereas DJ's will be happy to stump up for more subs/bassbins) The setup times (read: time on site) are also much longer when doing bands. In my experience
  17. Doesn't stop thousands of people of all ages doing them though, does it. I'm not sure that prohibition with anythoing is the cure, especially not when you're sending a message of 'No, you can't do that now, but in 2 years you're fine, ok'. It will be perceived as rubbish by the teenagers and they will continue to smoke regardless.
  18. What you are attempting is in most cases imposible. If you were lucky enough to find 2 different lights with colour on the same DMX channel and had the same colours in the same slots, and the same number of colours on the wheel then theoretically it could work....... See where i'm going with this....? If you want them all to show blue (or whatever) then you'll need to set up a scene on a controller that has them all on blue.
  19. Just get mic leads. Most XLR-XLR cables will be wired using 2-core and screen cable, so they'll be balanced. For most DMX applications that the mobile jock is going to encounter, balanced mic cable will suffice. Dedicated signal cable is only needed when you start to get into long runs.
  20. (imo) you're better off spending a bit more on a laser and getting proper scanning galvos rather than stepper motors. Even up to 15kpps they are good and can do basic shapes and pictures, but also the beam patterns are far more defined, with less flicker. Blanking systems get better with a bit more investment too. With the 2 videos you can just make out what patterns the scanning system is trying for but not quite getting there. The 3 colour is actually just 2 clours mixed (red and green) You can now pick up full colour systems (red, green and blue) and these are coming down in price
  21. Wow, Jenna Jameson is dead!?? Some of the stuff they can make those puppets do is incredible!!!
  22. Amps on full, every time. Fiddling hands can only ever turn down then. Gain strucuture is set with everything on full (0db) from mixer downstream, then final output to amps controlled by the LMS outputs
  23. I think Andy was trying to demonstrate my lack of knowledge of PHP code using html/xml tags rather than use PHP tags to show me up. I'd rather be doing some SQL.......
  24. In reality it'll probably be something nearer 2 as you're nearing the top end of the operating band and power compression will start to play a part. 3db is a mathematical/theoretical product but equally correct. *norty's world falls apart* Talking of power and heating (what a slick segue i hear you say!) has anyone ever felt a horn bin after 10 hours of hard use? The access covers for the rear chamber are generally very close to the magnet structure and thus heat easily. Some cabs use metal access covers to transfer heat more effectively. They get very warm in
