  1. Moving heads are great effects, but there are some things that need to be considdered...

A moving head effect is slower than a scanning head.

Moving heads cover 360 degrees around (often more) and 270 degrees over (again sometimes more).

So if you are using moving heads without a controller, most of the light effect will be in your face and not on the dancefloor.

I only use moving heads when they are mounted on trussing above the dancefloor, or behind a band, as the effect they create is more dramatic than a flower effect or scanner on its own.

If you are mounting your heads on a gantry above your show then the head will cover the whole area beneath it - including you... Which is great if you have a controller as you can make the heads light you up, or someone doing a speech. But if the lightshow is left to its own devices, it may well not spend as much time lighting the crowd as you and your kit.

If the Head is on the floor, or on top of a speaker, the majority of the lightshow will be in the air. This can look quite good as long as the show doesn't blind everyone!

I think the moral of the story is that if you are going to use moving heads then make sure that your scenes are programmed and the heads do what you want, when you want. And the important thing to remember when positioning moving heads is....

... There orientation has got to be the same every show! i.e. the head must be round the same way, and on the correct side of the show everytime!

I use 4 PR300 heads and am looking for some more. They only go out on the BIG shows and with the bands. But i have 2 DMX controllers to control my show, and the PR300s and some other effects are controlled on my laptop.

  2. I have just got in a couple of new Carlsbro Powerline Pro Amps and decided to road test them over the weekend.

The amps are very well built, with a classic design with moving needle VU meters instead of the LED types. On first use of the amp, the setting up is easy and the features on the back include a compressor, multi voltage sensetivity, Bridge modes including parrallel mono, stereo and bridge.

The 1200 gives 600Wrms per channel at 4 Ohm, And the 2000 gives 1000Wrms per channel at 4Ohm. Over the weekend i used them in various set ups to see what the perfomance was like:

    Setup 1:

2 pairs of speakers:- Top and Sub per side each 8Ohm on the 1200 alone.

Volume was good and clarity was superb even when sending a dead signal to the input - there was more noise generated by the input cable I used as it was too near to other transformers i was using.

    Setup 2:

2x Subs, 450Wrms @ 8Ohm 1 per side on the 1200 running through a Cross Over cut off around 250Hz. Good thumping bass and no limiting or clipping until the end of the night when it was turned up to see where it would go! The limiter cut in on the cross over, just as it started to clip.

    Setup 3:

2x 500Wrms @ 8Ohm Tops connected to the 1200, and 2x 1000Wrms Subs @ 4Ohm connected via crossover. Well as you can imagine, this was loud, very loud. We couldn't even turn it up more than half way to test it as the neighbours would complain. But rest assured, the next venue this is used in, it will be turned up to find out the exact SPL we have on this rig!

So over the weekend a highly sucessful test and we already have an order from one of the Dj's who attended Saturday nights show.

However... As with all good reviews... there needs to be a bad bit...

The amps are 2U which is great, but it means that they are full length for the racks.

The weight is not for the wimps out there as they weigh around 20Kg each.

But other than that, they look good, sound great, and even after a 6 hour show, don't even get warm!

They stayed cooler that the QSC amps I have as well!

For the price, these are fantastic peices of kit and as long as you dont mid the weight, are nice, compact units.

  3. The Tri-colour lasers are distributed in the UK by Spectrum.

If you are interested in a laser, check there site out, and then contact me for the best price!

    http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/thumbup.gif

As for blue lasers, unless you have money to burn DONT buy a blue laser.

The actual laser diode for a blue laser does not last very long. The techie people at spectrum have told me that since the blue lasers arn't very stable, they can break down. So they currently only sell the red, green and combo red+green lasers.

If your buying stands dont buy anything else but powerdrive stands they are british made and will last you a lifetime perhaps a little more expensive than the imported ones but the quality more than makes up for the extra. And if you do need to replace anything on them spare parts are available unlike the imported ones that you would just discard and buy new.

Powerdrive are ok, but heavy for what they are.

Mobil Tech are french and the sp2 is a very good tripod, slightly smaller than the powerdrive, but will hold 10KG more than the powerdrive version.

Anternatively, Ultimax winch stands are british made, and from the new range that i have just had the catelogue for have good load ratings and are double locked for safety.

I would personally recomend the Mobil Tech tripods as they are better than the 2 Powerdrive stands i bought when someone told me that "Powerdrive was the best"! But my experience of both makes, i prefer the Mobil Tech stands as they are more compact, and will fit across the boot of my truck.

But that is my opinion... But when i have ordered some of the new range of Ultimax Winch stands in... i will do a revew on the forum.

  5. SKB cases are FANTASTIC !!!! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/toot.gif

I am now a dealer of SKB and can get any product they sell. I can highly recomend the Milatary Spec cases, as they ore indestructable!!!

And they will proove it... Check the videos on there site. and the best thing about SKB???

THERE IS A MILLION MILE WARRENTY!!! If you break your case within your life... They WILL replace it!

How much trust would you put in a standard laptop case?

Would you throw the case in a lake? - SKB do!

Would you launch a case of a roof of a building? - SKB do!!!!

Infact they are that good, that i had to buy a laptop case for myself, and another for a freind, because they saw it and the films (I now keep the films on my laptop to show people!) and my Step father now wants one as he travels the world!

If you wan more information, then please let me know...

My new sales website will be online towards the end of the month... although a basic site will be online very soon:

  6. What make are your lights? and what do you do with them?

If you are using the Abstract range, they have there own controllers which are ideal for Disco use. Alternatively American DJ make some some controllers.

But if you want more control for band use, then either th Behringer DMX controller, or one of the Soundlab versions will do.

  7. If you are having problems finding any parts, nuts, bolts, anti scratch washers, captive nuts etc...

Let me know as have 1000's in stock as we use them in all of our cases

    Special FX

Or PM me for a quote on something special - Make sure you let me know that you are a member from the DJU Forum!

  8. FREEOLA Rocks!!!!

I have used various different ISP's and site hosting services, but Freeola is the onlyone that i recommend now!

    http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/thumbup.gif

I have never had any connection problems, and in the many years i have been using them, the web servers were down for 5 minutes back in 1997 which was for some essential maintenence at 4 am!

For those of you looking for an ISP and free web space Freeola is the one for you !

  9. As a PCDJ user, OtsDJ user, and a final scratch user... and after PLASA05 a virtual dj user... I think we need to ask you a question..

What sort of DJ are you?

    i.e.

If you want to beat mix, then PCDJ is not very goot, OtsDJ are still writting there beat mix, but Final Scratch and virtual dj enable you to mix "proper" dance music...

If You are more a party/disco DJ, then PCDJ or OtsDJ would better suit, as it will mix songs for you more like a radio station than a club...

I personally prefer OtsDj as the database and search facilities are far better than the PCDj software. Plus you can configue Otsdj to use 2 seperate channels on you mixer for cueing - i'm not sure how to do it with PCDJ though it must be possible.

PCDJ has a the numark controller.

Final scratch and virtual DJ uses timecoded cd/viny.

OtsDj - there are many controllers available, again its personal preference...

Then the choice between a laptop and custom pc is up to you. There are pros and cons to both systems.

Again i personally use a custom pc as mine doesn't only run the OtsDJ program, It runs my light rig and projector as well. Plus i have a touchscreen which makes drag and drop a sinch and there is no ball to get dirty, no mouse to make space for. and with a compact keyboard and touchpad, no moving parts to breakdown!

But each to there own. If you are near someone on the forum, i'm sure they would show you there software and the features then you can make your mind up.

  10. The VMX is a high mic output, but the behringer warrenty repair company told me that is normal! try convincing a dj that !

The 2 latest DEQ's both "trip out" One will sit for about 5 minutes, then start clicking the relay, the other takes a few moments to turn on and "boot"... then may/maynot decide to trip...

    Both are very tempremental. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/014.gif

  11. I have started this poll as i have had various Behringer kit come in and out of my workshop. Today i have just opened 2 (out of 10) new DEQ2496 DSP's and they are both faulty.

I was wondering if any one else had any problems with behringer kit and and what with?

Also let us know if your opinion of behringer is higher or lower that when you first had one of there products.

  12. QUOTE
The reason is quite simple, as you move around, you make static electricity. When you are charged up, and approach a component/system you will discharge not on contact, but gradually as you get nearer to said component

This however is not strictly true.

Static electricity is only produced by man made fibres - nylon, lycra etc. and treated wool for example. Rubber shoes on a nylon carpet as well!

By touching the metal of a computer case, will only change you level of Static electricty to that of the computer - which is why the pc should be grounded- plugged in. If the pc is not plugged in, and you are grounded then, when you touch the pc you can actually get a shock from the machine if there is sufficent static in the device.

Not everyone is equiped with a full ESD work station, and i do actually carry a mobile version of it. Bu there are som situations when an esd mat cannot be used and so other means of grounding both yourself, and the equipment need to be found.

I will admit, that when i am working on my own machines, i do not use any esd devices othere than a mains cord. As long as you know how to discharge yourself and the components you are useing then there will never be a problem.

The easiest way is to touch the pc case, but as soon as you let go there is a possibility to re charge as you move, so the best way is to keep in contact with the chassis at all times - lean on it! And as for touching the components DONT. Expansion cards have there own ground - the metal bracket use that. Hard drives have a metal frame, touch that. Floppy drives and CD roms come in Anti static bages, but ARE NOT sensitive devices...

So as long as you dont touch any part of the circuit board on any device, you can quite safetly move any component around....

.... But what about the Power supply????

Well, Leave it plugged in to the wall, remove all the intenal plugs, then unbolt the psu from the case. only when the psu is free from the case, can you unplug the mains lead... install it the reverse way and you never will have a problem.

I have been working on computers for 15 years and when the old pcs had Static sensitive devices, the working on pc's was a lot more stringent as when a motherboard went wrong, you repaired it! now when a motherboard goes wrong, you replace it!

Always remember, if in doubt dont do it!

  13. There are loads of programs that do...

But do you want a CD to be played backwards, or just a section of the song?

When we do this in the quiz, we use Numark CDN88 or otherwise, rip the cd section you want, and use windows sound recorder to reverse it. then simply re burn the disc!

    http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/thumbup.gif

  14. This is very simular to a design we came up with 2 years ago, but our tft simply folds down onto the top of the mixer - with a lump of foam between the mixer and screen. Then the lid of the case is foam lined too to protect the screen...

Depending on the type of TFT, we also power the screen from the PC so the TFT PSU is nowhere near an audio source. We have found the PSU's can generate unwanted noise from the transformers.

  15. When i started out some 15 years ago, there was less than 1 page of discos in the yellow pages.

Now there are 6 whole pages of discos and all colour, or white on black to make them stand out.

I used to advertise in the yellow pages but at nearly £1000 a year for my advert, when the queries started to decline, i stopped advertising with them.

I now get over 50% of work from the Internet, about 35% from existing customers, contract and word of mouth, and the rest from Thompson directory, local advertising, and a free listing on yell.com

So for me its not worth going in the Yellow pages in my area.

  16. Stripey paint is another...

    A stripey paint roller...

Sparks for the Angle grinder or welder...

    Matches for the MIG welder...

Fallopian tube, flange sprocket, or giggle pin in the local garage...

Left handed hammer, screwdriver, spanner... etc...

The thing is, the local DIY store had a mate in, so i used to tell anyone to go and ask for him for them and so we had a ping pong effect!

    In the computer industry:

    Hard drive eraser,

    TipEx for the word processor...

I am sure there are more... http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/laugh.gif

  17. If they have banned all songs with "Heaven" in them...

Does that mean i cant have "Highway to Hell" as my background song????

    http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/laugh.gif http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif

http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/censored2.gif idiots! I would have played it anyway - if it is a CIVIL wedding then what does god, heaven or hell have to do with it!!! and besides, all the guests were friends and family so i doubt they would care!!
