  1. But if the price of a 'DJ licence' was pitched at the silly level the ProDub licence was, many part-timers would have to cease working as DJs, or continue illegally. And remember - the ProDub fee was arrived at not as a result of a calculation of the lost revenue suffered by artists (zero pounds in fact) but rather by guessing the maximum fee they thought they could get away with - this is almost stated literally in some communication from them posted on this form. I think that's nothing short of disgusting. And I use CDs - I am therefore, it seems, no longer worthy, and risk be
  2. And having 2 dedicated mic channels is useful if the client wants to make a snappy announcement/speech. Having now messed about a bit with this mixer (It still hasn't been switched off since Friday) one little annoyance has reared its head - the headphone monitor. You can either monitor the output, a cue channel. or a mix of the two (for beat mixing assistance). All well and good so far. The trouble is, when you turn the pot to 'cue' only, the VU display then switches to cue channel only, meaning if you leave the headphones in this position all the time (as I normally do) you have no
  3. I certainly don't recall any ELO medley - I wonder if the client actually means an EP? I believe ELO did release an EP of some sort, but without digging out 'The Bible' I don't know what was on it.
  4. So not a design fault then. At least, not with the mixer... Thank goodness for that!
  5. October's busy enough for me, but November is... not. :) But that's the way it's always been - I dare say I'll get one or two teenagers' parties to help pay the expenses.
  6. Thankyou gentlemen for allowing us into this 'incident'! Har har!
  7. In what way had they blown up? What component had actually failed?
  8. If it's not due to the client's non-adherence to the terms and conditions (this includes ensuring adequate supervision of guests) then I offer a pro-rata refund. No-one's fault (a fire, for example), so offering a refund would be fair in the eyes of the law. Any other reason, i.e., if the client simply decides to terminate the gig for whatever reason, there will be no refund.
  9. Well, if it's good enough for them... The thing is, as long as the audio specs are good and the features are what you want, I'm not sure what extra you get by paying 100s for a mixer. They all use similar components and the electronic design is pretty standard stuff these days.
  10. Just checking the wording of my contract for cover of this kind of scenario...
  11. Agreed. Go for it - I doubt PLI can be obtained for anything like this price, plus there are other benefits associated with membership, too.
  12. I agree - I'm sure all announcements can be made perfectly well by the DJ himself, and the only type of jingle acceptable these days would be a comical one.
  13. Don't recall ever playing it, or having it requested. I personally wouldn't choose to play this, unless it was requested of course - too dreary and slow I feel.
  14. I'm beginning to think I prefer teenager parties - they have so much energy and really react to the music. Just the same way we used to in our teens, but to different music. If you wish to create the 'glory days', you can still do it, it's just that the music is different. Worst type of gig is a pub gig - to the point I no longer accept them. Reason being vile people and music choices.
  15. I'm with Norfolk on this as far as local charities with whom I have an affinity with are concerned. I do the local PTA discos for free (for the moment), as if I charged it wouldn't be worth them holding a disco at all, as there's probably a maximum of 40 kids who attend, plus my kids have been to this school and one still attends.
  16. Yes, it's not too bad a price at all - and thanks for offering the link. The one I ended up with isn't the DSP model, as I don't need the facility and it costs about 30 quid more. Not sure what other people on here think of this one - too late as I've bough it, but I would be interested to hear of any dodgy experiences with these, so I can be prepared - knock it to pieces if you like! :) There are a few indications that it's not top price equipment - a slight scratchy feeling to the sliders, rotary knob indicators not all aligned exactly correctly and so-on, but it'll do.
  17. Oh well - I went down to my 'local' supplier, armed with £350 and the name 'Denon' ringing in my ears... I came away with something a bit different - dare I mention it I wonder?? Firstly, it had exactly the features I required with no flashy redundant features. Secondly it was a nice 6U height. Thirdly the moise and harmonic distortion figures were considerably better than my old Numark. Fourthly it had a mic ducking feature - never had one of those before!! Fifthly - it was almost half the price of the Denon... OK, I know that to a degree you get what you pay for, but this
  18. It was pretty much this (amongst other things) that made me decide to pack it in in 2001, but here I am again. Some of us just never learn... But it's true - all you need is one appreciative crowd, or just one or two people to say something positive at the end really, and it all seems so much better.
  19. It certainly seems that way - more's the pity. I'd better check my policy actually, to ensure entertainment businesses are covered, although I did make it quite clear that the vehicle was a Transit used by a mobile disco, and the blokie said that was fine - but if I've learned anything so far in my travels through life, it's to trust no-one...
  20. Quote: "covers me as a driver or passenger in any car" This is the policy I have with the AA, just over £100 paid quarterly. Andy - why is yours so expensive? What extras do you have?
  21. Yep - treat it as a normal party. That's what they'll be expecting. Nothing for me this weekend either - off to Eden Project on Saturday with some of the family.
  22. But faders are a wearing part - I'd accept that. What I don't like are things like poorly designed power supplies with regulators fitted without heatsinks and running at 130 degrees, and 741s used in the audio chain... Trouble is, unless you get the chance to pull one apart before buying, you really have no idea, so Kev, thanks for the endorsement.
