  1. I bought my CD players last year purely because they are the industry standard (CDJ1000MK3). I could have bought cheaper ones that would do almost exactly the same job but i wanted the best and also wanted to be able to walk into any club and know that (almost all) will have the same gear that i have and i'll know my way around it instantly. If i was a mobile DJ then i probably would have got cheaper ones.
  2. I voted other but it would be fancy dress aswell.. I'd have a 70's disco night - Loved those original Car Wash nights at La Scala in London! I would dig out some of those underground but still great disco classics.. Real Paradise Garage stuff!
  3. I've had to significantly lower my fee to get a regular weekly gig which is very local to me.. It's down to the fact that it's so convenient for me but i'm waiting until we have a couple of packed nights in a row until i try to increase my fee. The place is struggling a bit at the mo. Time of year not helping!
  4. I know quite a few DJ's around my age - 32 - and not one of them has any desire to go into 'mobile' DJ'ing. They , and me, are all pub/club DJ's who turn up with their music ( sometimes their own decks ) and play. I think the image of a mobile DJ doesn't suit young DJ's coimg through. Thinking about all the mobile DJ's i've seen at wedding's etc, they are all of a certain age. I think they may be viewed as uncool and cheesy and that's why it could be hard to find a decent young DJ who can give it all the banter on the mic and play a wide range of music. It takes a few years to be able to
  5. There are a few places i'm trying to get work in at the mo. It's not easy as it seems a lot of the time it's who you know rather than how good you are.. The two places i really want to play in are VERY popular and have people queing down the road to get in every weekend so they have no desire to change the DJ's they have. One of them has 5 DJ's in rotation some nights so they hardly get any time each on the decks. Best way i can think of is to go and see the manager with a CD and tell him how keen you are to come and play in his club. Then chase him up a few days later to see if he has li
  6. What a load of guff! There is no correct way for a DJ to look at the industry.. There are many aspects to DJ'ing and big differences between them all. A 'radio' DJ can be a world away from a DJ playing in underground clubs in London. I will agree that they are all there to entertain and that is what every DJ is judged on and rightly so. Whatever music he plays using whatever equipment he likes and whether he uses a mic or not makes no difference, he is still a real DJ. Even that young kid playing the latest 12" tunes to his mates is a DJ! Surely anyone who plays music to entertain other
  7. Correct! I started playing in commercial venues in August! Track 1 charted a few months back but has been around for a while before that in the clubs and Ibiza etc
  8. My top 5 requested over the last year - 1- Hands up for Detroit - Fedde Le Grand 2- Hips don't lie - Shakira 3- Love Don't let me go - The Egg 4- Boogie 2nite - Booty Luv 5- Push It - Salt n Pepa - ?!
  9. Yep, i get this too.. Last friday in fact! Sometimes with 20 secs to go deck 2 is still empty and i can't find anything i want to play next next! Cue the sweaty palms....
  10. I would honour the original NYE booking and pass the new booking to a DJ mate who would cut you in on the £800.
  11. I had a packed dancefloor dancing to R&B for about 2 hrs solid, i was getting V bored of the R&B (as was the bar manager) so went for a bit of Chic - Good Times.. A group of girls near me turned round and shouted NOOOOOOO!!! Then the floor emptied! I didn't know whether to cut it or let it go till the end, not an easy decision esp as it was one of my first gigs. I think i cut it half way in the end and managed to get the floor back after reverting back to the R&B. Like many have said, it depends on the situation as to whether you can get away with cutting the tune strai
  12. I play in a bar/club every friday and rarely does a night go by without some kind of trouble. A lot of people that get ejected seem to go looking for a weapon to either throw at the bouncers or the floor to ceiling glass windows, £2000 a pop! Last week there was a guy in there who had lost the power of speech before i had even started playing. He must have come and 'spoken' to me after every other tune, funniest thing was i had no idea whether he was enjoying it or hating it! His arms were waving around and he was trying to say something, the only words i caught all night were ' You must
  13. I played in club/bar friday night, not played in there before and there was a HUGE delay in the sound coming from my headphones and the sound coming from the sound system. Normally i would cure this by using my monitor , which i did take BUT there was a speaker right next to me from the club's system and i couldn't hear my monitor!! Well i could hear it but it sounded like the grand national was happening next to me with all the beats i was hearing. Had to mix the tune in then take the headphones off then push the speed forward a little on the incoming track till it was in time.. What a nitema
  14. Cheers Ed, I'll be giving the mic thing a go as that's what the manager wants. The only thing that got my back up on here was the fact that i've just asked for some advice and some feel that they need to question the fact that i should call myself a DJ!! I can only go by my experiences and i've been to many clubs and bars around the London area and in all honesty i've heard one DJ use a mic and that was when Graham Gold had to tell the crowd that he couldn't mix because he had just spilt his pint into the mixer! I've seen many top DJ's live and the fact is they let their music
  15. FBS and Paul Oakenfold have lots of strings to their bows.. DJ'ing is just one of them. My point is that a DJ comes in many different varieties and it's not defined by the use of a microphone or not.
