  1. I have a program called kj pro which is designed to make books i can export this list as a word or excel spred sheet then i can make a pdf from it if necessary.

Yep.....thats true about KJ Pro.....it does make life easier thats for sure.

But the one I use for my songbooks is this....

    Airwer Karaoke Songlist Creator

I find it much better than KJ Pro and its certainly a lot simpler.

Theirs also a free demo available from that link.

    Basically it works like this......

    1) Tick off the discs you have from the database.

e.g. SF001, SF010, SF056, SF087.......keep adding the discs till you have all your collection.....

    2) Export the list, eiteher within the program or to an excel file etc You can also alter the way it sorts the tracks e.g. Artist or Song Title.

Then just alter the print setting so it looks how you want, you can customise the font and size of text then just print it........its an absolute doddle!

  2. Sorry I seem to have wandered onto the wrong thread....

When I saw the title I thought it said:

    Madonna, Would you?

Well let me put it this way.......Yes I would.

Must remember to read things more carfully. :dan:

    On topic.....

Yes I would shake his chubby hand, no problem. (come on that was YEARS ago, no need to hold a grudge now).

  3. Errrr......

Thats a great list up their, some of the tunes I know, and some I dont.....some of the ones that I have listened to now and thought "OMG yea I remember that one, I cant believe I have never played it!".....so those such tunes are going to get played at an event I do in the near future for sure!

I love this kind of Dance music, and try and get a set of it in at every event I do.......and this kind of thing normally goes down well at all kinds of events!

Im now struggling to add to that list, not sure if these have been mentioned so sorry for any dupes! (Im also not certain they are all 90s, but I like the tunes so thought I better mention them)

    The Power - SNAP!

Baby Got Back - Sir Mix-A-Lot

Whoomp! There It Is - Tag Team

You Don't Know Me - Armand Van Helden feat. Duane Harden

  4. Hmmmm

A number of times I have been asked.....

"Do you provide the disco lighting and everything?"

The question allways baffles me a bit becasue I can never quite understand why they are asking if I provide it.

Would the question not be better worded "WHAT disco lighting do you provide".

I received the question a couple of weeks ago off a potential customer.

So I repplied explained exactly what I provide, but as the booking is not till late next year I also explained like Nik did that we are constantly updating our equipment and it might change.

I also included a couple of photos on the email of setup options and some as I call them "good time" photos where I have pics of full dancefloors and my setup in the background of said photos.

The repply that came back was as follows.

    Hi Nick

Thank you for forwarding on the photos.. looked like everyone was enjpying themselves!!!

Your disco looks really neat and tidy and is exactly what we are looking for.

What deposit do you need? And if I pay by cheque where shall and I send it and to whom shall I make it payable?

Just a query I have, my partner and I have very different tastes when it comes to music!!! If there are certain songs we would like you to play (or not play in my partners case!!) is this ok.. we are making a list at the moment of our favourite tracks.. is this ok??

    Thanks

    Lucy

As regards the music, well obviously I repplied saying of course it was ok to choose your music, its your wedding day your choice etc.

I have spoken to the bride on the telephone too, and one of the reasons she has now booked me was because Im allowing them to choose the music, she told me that two other discos she asked the same question too told them that they were not allowed to make any requests........which I find astonishing!!!

But to be honest my competitors loss as they wont take music requests is my gain as I got the booking LOL

  5. I can only afford this by charging more and in turn offering more. When I was earning £120 for a sat night before tax and expences my disco was stagnent and had to supliment it with agency lorry driving...

Now partly through choice and partly through design I have not driven a lorry in about nine months..

Please dont feel I am knocking you as I remember how I felt when guys on here would say £120 thats to cheap you should be charging XXX amount. Look at is we are trying to help you.

There will always be DJs who charge more and who charge less all I am saying is which one do you want to be?

Seems me and you are more similar than you realise Nik (well appart from you not being able to spell NICK properly LOL).

I was the same agency Lorry driving up till about 6 monthes ago, raised my game, charging more and Im certainly not going to go back to 4am starts and 12-15 hour days shifting other peopls stuff about LOL

Yes thier will allways be DJs who will charge more and who charge less, thats a fact.

What annoys me is being undercut for gigs by DJs who can afford to go out for less then me becasue they are part-time, they are not trying to make a living out of DJing so can charge whatever they want because they dont need to make a proffit.

Charge what your worth, not charge less just because you can.

And yes Jim, maybe this has gone off topic, but whenever a thread is started that meantions "how much" it inevitably sooner or later will get round to this kind of debate, so to be honest I cant see a problem with us discussing it.

  6. Im not critisising you.......just saying thier is a better market everywhere, and I prefer to sift out the price shoppers anyway so I dont mind loosing a few bookings rather than sell myself off cheap.

I believe I give an excellent service for 18ths, in fact Im certain I do as I get more positive comments about 18ths than I do about any other birthday party so I must be better at them LOL

So I think that I should be charging a little more than my competitors because Im worth the extra.

18ths are quite hard to get a decent payment out of I will agree with you their......

But as regards 18ths I charge more than most of my competitors and I book more than I loose.

Just out of interest how much did you charge for it, and how long is the event for?

  7. Yes I was deadly serious about charging £450.

Its just another day, although one which is a holiday and one which people like to spend time with their family (which I do I might add).

No, I don't charge £37 whatever normally - there isn't the market for that around here and I know the market well.

    Why the such high prices?

You are doing the same job just on a holiday.

Firstly.........It is not just another day, everyone earns or gets paid more on Christmass day (unless your a fool and work for a company that contracts you to work xmas day for nothing), why do they get paid more? Compensation for spending time away from their families I guess, plus companys know that staff would not work unless they get paid more money.

Secondly........"no I dont charge £37 normally"........I presume from that you charge less? Their isnt the market for it, is that honestly what you think?

I used to think like that, and Im now charging more than I ever have, so thier obviously is a market for it and I dont care where you live theirs always people that will pay considerably more.

I wouldnt even consider this one

As a family man i enjoy this time of the year !!!

Dont get me wrong Im a family man too and love the time of year, not for me but for the excitment of the kids, christmass is for kids I think not for adults.

Come on guys, when you was a kid you gotta admit christmass had "magic" now your an adult its just not the same.

Also this gig didnt start till 10:30 in the morning, meaning that you would still get the best bit of christmass in seeing the kids open their pressies, which for me is still the best bit of christmass.

And theirs allways boxing day to do all the things you would have done on christmass day, so I really dont see the problem.

  8. SuperstarDJ is right.....your going to need some kind of convertor.

Either what he sugested or one of these PC to TV Convertor

Thats what I use for my laptop when I need to send to both a computer monitor and TV at the same time, but it will also send a signal to just a TV from the VGA out on the laptop.

Karaoke in a chinese restraunt ehhh, thats different, I thought Karoke was a Japanese thing LOL

  9. If local, £450.

    More if had to travel.

£450......your not serious are you!!!!

This is a 12 hour gig, thats only £37.50 per hour.

I would hope your charging more than that for normal gigs never mind one of christmass day!!!

    Anyway my price:

Tripple time, so thats £150 per hour - £1800 for the gig.

Normally spend xmas day with the family, but if sombody was willing to pay me £1800 for one days work I would do it, and we would have our own christmass day on boxing day.

  10. Has anyone seen a PAT testing CERT?........mmmm no....cos there isn't one. The law requires that portable equipment is tested by a responsible person and that results records are duly kept of such tests/inspections. All on a "regular basis".

Hence many sparks merely type it up! In fact ( and please do correct me if I'm wrong) the HSE doesn't make it very clear what they expect from a PAT test at all. Basically, for the gear we lug around a good visual check and maybe a pat test for any power items is all that is required.

Your right, their is no actual "certificate" as such, you meerly have to prove that the tests have been done by use of some form of document.

Thats exactly what I do.........My Dad is an electrician by trade.

He is now a School Caretaker after being made redundant, so in the school holidays he is allowed to borrow the PAT Tester, we are doing mine tomorow.

We sticker all the equipment to show its been done, and a document listing every item with test results is then produced, he can then sign the document to say he has done the tests. And thats all their is too it.

New equipment should not need a pat test immediately as is had a test on manufacture completion.

Sorry mate, but thats total rubbish!

Just ask Mike at Phase 1, they will PAT test new equipment for you before despatching it to you, many times I have seen him posting on the forum saying NEW items have failed PAT tests.

A common fault is failing the "earth bond" test, as they tend to paint/powder coat under the earth screw meaning that it does not get a good contact.

Last year when doing my PAT testing me and my dad had two items which failed in this way, had to scrape away some paint from under the screw to get a better contact so it passed.

  11. Lets get this straight.....

I like kids, Im a family man at heart.....but......

Anything more than about 5 young kids in a room at the same time and I find it very difficult to cope with, they just stress me out!

I think its all down to a young childs attention span, get them doing somthing they like and 2 minutes later they are bored and playing up again!

I think it takes a special breed of DJ to be able to cope with them and keep them entertained for long periods of time...........Im really not that person and I do point that out to potential clients.

  12. I leave this sort of gig to those who specialise in children's entertainment.

After having the same kind of problems that you had "aaadisco" in the past, Im inclined to agree with Kingy, and I think Im going to leave it to the specialists.

But that said I keep on getting recomendations from toddlers partys, so I must be doing a good job!

Im jacking my prices up for them though, so hopfully this will put a few people off as Im not keen on them.

Im not charging extra for them, I just used to do them cheaper as a reduced price disco on a sunday afternoon was better than nothing so I charged less.

But I think IF I continue to do them, I will charge my normal rate......take it or leave it!

One thing i always tell my clients when booking - We are first and foremost a Disco and we will provide entertaiment mainly associated with the music and Not the other way around i.e. we are not Entertainers who come along with a Disco Rig for effect!

    Excellent way of putting it!

I do try and explain to people the same thing, but putting it like that is even better.

  13. I don't want to sound negative because it is something that is needed in the town, but a venue further from the centre may be the answer. The Council does have other halls of the size you looking at for hire at a reasonable rate. If you still want to use the same venue pick a weekday night, the town will be quieter and a lot safer then.

Theirs fors and against for the Friday night....

My bigest problem with any other night than a Friday is that I cant see parents letting their kids out will 10 or 11 at night on a school night........Im not sure maybe Im wrong.

Good to see sombody else from Kettering though, I didnt realise their was anyone else on here from Kettering.

Im out on the lash tonight in Kettering (as I have my first friday off in I dont know how long), where you at tonight, I will come and say hello!

    Nick

  14. One I did get asked for by two or three of the Irish folk at the wedding was.....

Fields of afenrye (SP? I think thats what they said)

I had a club remix of it, but didnt think they would apreciate it, so didnt play it.

And yes their is a few "Irish Clubland" discs around, they would be worth a punt too I reckon.

    opps....my mistake.....

    "Fields Of Athenry"

Its on this Irish Clubland disc.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Irish-Clubland-Cel...e/dp/B000127NNE

Also try......Whiskey in the jar and The Wild Rover

I agree Paul and they are god awful but he was looking for updated versions.

    Paul

Yea I agree.....Irish Clubland stuff would be good for a 21st, maybe not the norm at a wedding but for a bunch of 20 somthings it would be great.

  15. I had a predominently Irish crowd at last saturdays wedding.....

    They asked me to play....

    The Saw Doctors - N17

They might like that depending on what kind of music their into.

My crowd certainly went wind for it.

  16. For weddings......

    Take That - Never forget!

Get the bride and groom in the middle of the floor with all their freinds and family in a circle around them singing it too them!

Trust me they will love it!

and then follow it up with "Whitney Houston - One Moment in time" as a slowie.

  17. I've had my Mackie set up 2 x450s and 2 x1501s for a couple of months now. I bought them s/h and was a bit worried about all that thermal stuff you read, but I can honestly say I'm well satisfied with them

Nearly the same as me......I think I have had mine close to 6 months now though, and like you I bought them second hand.

I cant fault them, they have been faultless.

And I get many compliments about the sound quality, from customers.

Personally I don't like Mackey...I know the 450s are the best selling active 12s world wide but I still don't like them. I find the American style harsh and extremely directional top end offensive to the ears.

Probably all down to personal taste then isnt it, but all the DJs who swear by Mackie cant all be wrong can they.

  18. Yes, but not lately

Me too......but like Andy not for a while.

I cant remember the exact details of the call, but I think it was somthing along similar lines where I get a phonecall saying I have agreed to somthing which I havn't.

I think mine was somthing to do with an Ambulance Service publication and they said I had agreed to advertise and were calling to take a debit/credit card number for the payment of the invoice!

Well I know the emergency services scams have been well publicised, so I gave her a torrent of very colourfull language and put the phone down!

I seem to be getting a lot of calls about my car insurance too at the moment as they now know its due for renewall in November, I believe this is because last year I put my details into a couple of those "get the best price" websites, and now they think they have the right to use my phonenumber to bug me whenever they choose!.......these poeple get a torrent of colourfull launguage too!!!!

  19. Just had a look at that website, you have to pay to get the information, so you could pay £3, get a telephone number and be told they already have someone ?

Correct.....and thats happened to me on many many occasions.

So far I have had two bookings from goodparty, so the total income totals about £400......and I have spent about £20 to get that £400.......so Im still £380 in proffit.

It would be nice to convert a few more enquirys though.......I think the budget idea on the site does not work, most of the time the budgets are way way off.

Too many price fishers on goodparty, people out for the cheapest and not the best.

  20. I find goodparty produces a lot of dodgy leads for the ones that I go after.

Have gone after two 18ths that were on their recently in my area, both turned out to be people researching for a college assignment of some kind and not real cutomers at all.

I have gone after two other partys too, and both of them came to nothing as when I spoke to them the day after thier details appeared they had already booked a DJ.

I dont think I will be putting anymore money into it, I have had a few jobs out of it, and the income from it is far bigger than the expenses, but even so, most of the time the enquirys seem like a waste of time.

  21. Sad thing is that the majority of kids are usually well behaved and just out for a good time. The one I used to do was brought to an end by half a dozen mindless morons that caused a ruck that involved the police.

Good luck Nick and I hope it all works out for you. There are too many kids hanging around the streets with no where to go. Our local shopping centre resorted to playing Val Doonican through the centres PA system to make them move on (seriously!).

I think your right Tony, the majority of the kids will be good kids, who just want a night out of dancing and listening to their favorite tunes while partying with their freinds!

Their will of course allways be some element of troublemakers.

I have just found out that the last sceme was stopped due to damage to the venue, but from what I hear the majority were well behaved kids with just a handfull spoiling it for the rest of them.

They were just letting anyone in off the street and charging them an entrance fee, so I think that working like this the potential for trouble will allways be their.

However, if I can convince the council and venue managment that a membership sceme should be in place, and it would work.

Sombody would need to be responisible for the database of members details though, and Im hoping the council agree to take this on, as I certainly dont want to be responsible for this side of things.

Then we should be able to provide a safe and fun enviroment for the good kids and keep out the troublemakers.

I may have a hard job convincing the council & venue that its worth a go, but Im at least going to try.

As for Val Doonican.......that would be enough to make me leave the shopping centre, so I can see how that works!
