Theres something that doesn't "quite sit right" if you are paying merely for a recomendation especially if the venue is recommending more than one service provider as the venue will be in a "win win" situation regardless of your outcome, if however they are only recommending a single service provider it may be useful especially if the overall fees are good.
There is a local castle that I have just started working for and they ask for 10% of our final fee, in return for this they market us in their wedding packs as exclusive service providers.

No problems here either although I tend to upload my own designs.
Had brochures cards and postcards, all top drawer.

The way I see it is.......
Your friend took the £100.00 deposit from DJ 1, DJ 1 informed his client of the change (apparently) therefore the booking is with your friend and there in the cancelation - your friend should of raised the relevant contracts with the end client before taking the cash.
If DJ 1 did not notify the client then depending on the terms of contract (ie cancelation notice terms) your friend should return the money to DJ 1 who should in turn will return it to the client. if its outside a 31 day window then tough, this said it all hinges on whether the original DJ really notified the client of the change or if he just hoped for the best!
This said i'm sure the situation is not that clear cut and it sounds as though its without contracts (other then the original DJ 1 to client booking).
Whichever way you look at it its a ramshackle way of doing business and another notch on the ever-thing reputation of the professional DJ.

22nd must be a jinx on the forum as I have had 6 enquires for this date for various functions and prices but converted none!
Whats going on? lol
-
I've had them and if i remember right they had a pro looking website but the general tone of the mails really didn't ring with confidence so left well alone.
-
I'd like to register an Interest in a set.
After Mr P ofcoarse!
-
All my venues are fine with me taking water in as its just me breaking the rule and i'm working. It may be different if they found coke or redbull of any quantity as they normally charge top whack for this,
Would some venues expect you to stop mid-set, hush everyone down and announce "I will be back in 10 minutes after I have queued at the bar and taken on adequate refreshments"?
P.S
can't remember the last time i got brought a drink, I'm sure it was before my price increased!

Neil you carry on investing 10k for a kit that punters dont care about whilst i'll go out with only my "behringers" and make a profit!
3 years to make a profit??
Am I totally missing the point??
Per year I do say 30 gigs at £150 per time = £4500
Who in reality is going to spend more than £4500 to start up?
This statement reflects your target market which is only one spoke on a big wheel. your clients dont care, mine do and they will pay to make sure they get it.
You have not deducted anything from your £4500, is every pound you earn profit? surely not otherwise 20% (£900) of that is for the taxman so your 'profit' is down to already down to£3600 - I think you are refering to a gross figure.
Or If thats what you receive for 30 gigs then even the basics relating to a part time DJ, pli, produb (I have read you use a laptop and winamp I have read you do not buy much new music so have not included updating the music collection) even a conservative figure would see basic expences at £750 a year. that brings you down £3750.00 then minus £750 tax would leave you a NET profit of £3k not 4.5k - As i said im offering a conservative view on this as there is no way it can cost £0.00 to go out on the road if the DJ has PLI and Produb to name a few required items.
As for £4500.00 on setting up i would say that was about right for a decent setup however if i was to start again tommorow and aim at £150 gigs then I could buy my gear 2nd hand and use my personal music collection all for under a grand.

things are looking ok for jan and feb 09 with 6 bookings over the period at the moment normally this time of year is dead for me.
on the flipside March and april are dire but may change nearer the time.
I had increased my prices of 09 but may freeze them to 08 prices I think taken them down anymore is a backwards step and I will ride that out as long as I can afford to.
I'm thinking of cancelling all of my insurances and business costs and getting a PAYG mobile and and charging £100 cash a night. - JOKE!
-
DJI is similar to DJEP both in price and features.
-
I've been guilty of having the same prices for a couple of years untill around twelve months ago as I always thought I knew what people were willing to pay and prefered to quote an average price to fill the date.
Most of this year I have been steadily raising my fee on a per event basis and i have now set my fees to a price i feel i'm worth rather then concentrating too much on what the guy down the road is doing and so far this is working well, Infact I'm hoping to get a suffiecent amount of quality gigs that will allow me to take/afford a Saturday off a month or maybe even the weekend as it is too easy to work yourself stupid in this industry.
I intend to carry on in this fashion and will increase my fees per year taking basic increases and inflation in addition to increasing the profit margin in a bid to keep the business moving forwards.
-
see where you are coming from Wayno but I like been paid on the night it makes it easier for me to keep on top of my bills been a full time DJ.
Paul
I too am Full time and as such like to go to work safe in the knowledge the bill is settled and my rents getting paid and i haven't got to chase people on the night, after all I'm being paid to entertain guests not run after clients debt collecting lol
-
Happened a couple of times but always stuck it out and got paid.
But just to make sure this situation doesn't arise again I now require the balance in full 14 days before the event date as on both occasions the worry of getting paid overshadowed my enjoyment of the events.
-
I believe they are in the process of updating various aspects of the service.
-
Nick, I think you have missed your other expenses.
PLI
PAT
Van/car insurance (as in on the level working as a DJ/carry Dj gear and not neglecting to tell the underwriters)
pro dub (if required)
Bank Interest charges
Telephone bill - mobile
Telephone bill - landline
van repairs/tyres etc
tax/ni
cost of staionary and consumables
the list goes on and on for a legitimate disco
the list gets even longer if it is also a full time profession.
I am a little suprised at YBE as according to your calculations you don't pay tax/NI! ;-)
And I cant believe for one minute that it only costs £20 to put a show out, Im going to need a tissue!
-
My quote genorator came back at a touch Below £490.00 then i chucked £15 on for the chris shepperds greatest hits.
Would you like me to send you the contract, I only require a 50% reservation fee :)
-
Strange one this year - I have 7 bookings for December, all weddings not an Xmas party in sight untill January then I have 3!
Then again I think the majority of my xmas parties last year didnt book untill mid-october through november, plenty of time yet!
-
I require a retainer of 25% withing 7 days of booking then the balance no later then 14 days before the event date, works for me and it keeps the cash flow in order!
-
Tonight Im doing a kids disco and karaoke combo for a wedding untill 930/buffet end then disco all the way as the early end of a gig tends to drags or has everyone everywhere.
Cant see how a properly compered kroaky is tacky, same quality equipment and playback etc, LED par-cans on the singers.
Everything in small quantities......
-
Its an S+H starcloth booth, It is a fitted wool surge starcloth wrapped around a metal framework.
This badboys are areound £700ish to buy.
-
Its alright, they will probably just drag soem random in off the street, I mean by all accounts their last rep at the NADJ AGM was just as clueless!
-
Just had the rep on the phone for the local YP book and they are offering some amazing details like free full colour in addition to reduced insertion fees - must be desperate to get people in!
-
Not at the moment but our good friends at vistaprint and a bit of time designing makes me think i will be soon! - nice little touch methinks.
Did play with various gift ideas like bottle of champers or a tasteful keepsake but think thats waay OTT, unless ofcoarse they want to spen £1000 or more!
Should Recommendations Be Paid For?
in Marketing & Business Matters

You tell me?
The way I read it was that you were making a point out of having to pay for the recomendations (without gurantee of making a booking) not actual bookings.
