  1. Hi. We use OTS Turntables Silver. I say 'we', as I work with my business partner. I DJ and he takes care of lights, electrics and effects through a keyflash unit. So that we had 2 copies of OTS, just for back-up, we both bought a copy of Turntables Silver. It costs about £25. Do a search for OTS Turtables. It works great for laptop play-out but doesn't have the functionality of OTS AV (but then it is only £25). It auto-fades from disk a to disk b, you can alter the pitch, speed and you can even play the track (OTS or MP3) backwards, which is great for music quiz's. Runs on XP and system requi
  2. I would try to play all songs on a request list, (i.e.) requested by the client. My T&C's state that I will not knowingly play any track that is offensive due to language or content, unless requested by the client. To cover myself at a gig I would make the following announcement if it was really 'sensitive'. "OK Guys, this next track is a request from (name), so don't shoot the DJ"!
  3. This is not hypothetical, as I am doing this right now! So far: 2 x Geni XTC's 2 x Soundlab Vormas Total including delivery was £97 Numark dm950 mixer brand new incl delivery was £24 Add to that a pair of speakers from the Ad Trader (200w rms 15" RCL drivers) for £15 then this weekend on ebay I bought a pair of Stage Line 150w rms full range speakers and a Laney 300w 8 channel mixer amp, plus a pair of speaker stands for £127. So that's £263 so far. I'm going to use my laptop running OTs DJ software. Even if you buy a laptop and software, and a lighting truss
  4. Haven't actually done one yet, as I'm starting my disco business on September 1st, but I will be charging £80 for a saturday afternoon kids party, on the basis that if I can get £180 for a Friday night, £80 Saturday afternoon and £200 Saturday night, it all adds up. We shall see John
  5. Try using your hands. I doubt that I could get a laser out using my feet, either :bouncy:
  6. Thanks, Paul. What's the situation with the soundcard? Did the onboard card work until you upgraded?
  7. Kinda like my situation with my current occupation, as a driving instructor. In 2004, I bought a brand new Kia Picanto for driving lesson use. Air-con, dual air bages, ABS, electric everything and paid £6400. The car was fine to start with, then became an absolute nightmare with faults. I got rid of it and bought a 1999 Proton Compact (same as a Mitsubishi Colt) from Ebay for £640. Just 10% of the cost of the Kia. The car has done 38,000 miles since I've had it, with only 3 light bulbs needing to be replaced in all that time. Sometimes the older stuff is a lot more reliable! Do I n
  8. Someone sent me a message, but I can't find it now!!! They use a pair of IBM laptops for DJ'ing, and the machines were not very high spec, as I remember. I wondered what the minimum spec was. I know that if you use mixing software, such as OTS or similar, there are minimum requirements, but what if you ran the lappies through a manual mixer, like a numark dm950. Does anyone use older machines, and if so, what spec, and are they OK? There has always been this falacy that you need to keep buying the most up-to-date machines, which I know is not true. Anyone?
  9. You know what they say? If it 'aint broke, don't fix it!
  10. I think I'm still looking at pc as my main play out, although when I first started thinking about a new career as a digital dj, I didn't know about the DJ Licence thing. :omg: I can't see why the case on a pc should be any less protection than a flightcase, and as Buskerball said, it's quick and easy to slide the side-panel of a case when necessary. Not so sure it would be that easy if it was rack mounted, but I'm sure there are reasons why people do rack-mount their PC. Any recommendations on an internal soundcard? Thanks John
  11. I was just wondering why people use laptops instead of a PC. A dedicated small-form PC and a flat-panel screen isn't going to take up much more room than a laptop, plus you can fit your choice of internal souncards. When things go wrong, or you want to upgrade, a PC is much easier to work on. I can build a pc, but not a laptop. I just wondered why laptops were the weapon of choice (isn't that a song?) for most dijital DJ's. John
  12. Thanks Tony. There is a round cut-out at the back. Do I need any particular 'type' of speakon socket? I had a look, and the 15" is an RCL 15228HP Bass Mid stamped at 200w 8 ohms. The horn is only marked as RCL 393, and the tweeter isn't marked at all, other than 'Motorola'. I wasn't aware of the crossovers. I didn't know that there were any, as the guy didn't mention having removed them. All things considered, I think I got a bargain as the pair only cost me £15! Thanks John
  13. Thanks All I will have a look around at prices. I'm planning to build a small-form pc for my disco and will consider both options. Maybe the external card would be better, in the event of the pc crashing, I would use the laptop as back-up, and then the external card would come into it's own. Thanks again John
  14. Hi I'm trying to set up on a tight budget, and to that end, I have managed to buy a pair of cabs which need the drivers to be re-connected. 15" woofer plus tweeter and horn in cabs measuring 27" tall X 18" wide X 15" deep. The seller had planned to use the parts in some cabs that he was building, but never finished the job, so they now need re-fitting. What's the best way. Series or parallel? Also, the inputs are missing. What sort do I need? Thanks John
  15. Why do people recommend an external soundcard for pc dj'ing? The internal pci card transfers 1056 megs per second whereas the usb devices that I have looked at seem to run at 12 megs per second. Have I been looking at the wrong things? I plan to use a dedicated pc for my disco, with an MP3 player as back-up. I'm not sure why external soundcards are prefered, so I must be missing something. Please 'enlighten me'! Thanx John
