  1. I still don't understand why pubs can't be given the option of smoking or non smoking, and I've no trouble with non smoking in restaraunt or longe bar areas. There must surely be a difference between breaking a law, and expressing an opinion of one? What happens when the ID card comes in, complete with your weekly alcohol credits on it? Or you're told what you can or can't eat for your evening meal each day. I accept that smoking is unpleasant to non smokers, but there are far bigger risks to health around, so just pray that this isn't the thin end of the wedge!
  2. Thorpe Bay nr Southend in Essex? I'm sure I did this a few years ago, let me rack my brains and see what I can remember, I'm not god on this kind of thing unless it was a complete nightmare, which is probably good news :)
  3. Thanks peeps :) Kind of sounds how I was expecting it to work, and the structure most of you seem to be working was pretty much what I'd had in mind. Next step is to have a look at some software, have a play, and take it from there I guess. Hopefully most of the free trial stuff is easily removed once I've decided which way to go? Am I likely to get any conflicts having more than one piece of software on the machine at any one time does anybody know?
  4. Sorry if this has already been covered, couldn't see a thread. I'm beginning the long slow process of converting my CD's to MP3, and will download some of the trial DJ software to try out and see how I get on. initially I'm intending to rip everything to an external USB hard drive, but wondered if there are any tips on organising tracks into folders. I've yet to see how most of this software works, if I put stuff into folders, such as 70's, 80's, slow, dance etc is that going to cause me problems further down the line, or does the software work better if all the tracks go into one bi
  5. This DMX stuff is scaring the pants off me. Most of my lighting is ancient and still being run off of STL controller via Bulgin plugs, but I guess I will have to bite the bullet soon

    Nineties Music

Not sure if they're still available (probably should have checked before posting) but for "dancey stuff" the "On a dance tip" CD's are pretty good, fairly commercial, but some good dance tracks that I still play, Bobby Brown, Nightcrawlers etc.
  7. Slightly different take on it, but the guy that did my wedding cued up the wrong song on the CD I'd given him, and played "After The Love Has Gone" Couldn't say too much as I wasn't paying him, and shame of shames, I put the wrong song on at a friend's first dance once :?
  8. I've always been of the school of thought that you should have "headroom" on your amplifier. It means being sensible with what you put through your drivers, but most amps give a better quality signal when they're not working so hard. I'd also be more worried about the damage a clipping amp would do, rather than turning it up more than you know you should.
  9. discussion on the radio this afternoon about the new problem, pub beer gardens being full up with people smoking, often in the vicinity of non smokers. No :poo: sherlock!
  10. Let's go for Manic Monday, I like that tune :)
  11. Nice post Jeff as a fellow "qualified" sparks this stuff gives me nightmares, definately a case sometimes of ignorance is bliss.
  12. But that's life though, regardless of occupation. I'm an electrician by trade, work for myself, every day, in spite of legislation, I still have to fight against fireman/builders/dole doing it cut price on the side, and in most cases, probably doing the same job I'd do. Doesn't matter what you do these days, you have to sell yourself, do this, or pay the price.
  13. I think the last couple I did, which would have been about 5 years ago now, so maybe not so relevant? were both Saturday lunchtime birthday parties, both fairly local, and both used minimal kit before I headed off to evening gigs. Iirc I charged between £60-80, and at the time viewed them as a nice little add on to the day's earnings, maybe I was wrong there :) Was offered a 40th for one of the parents too from one of them, but couldn't do it for some reason I can't remember now, probably already booked.
  14. I'm gearing up for an attempt at the moment, have managed to start not having any fags prior to lunchtime in the last week, and the rush off of the first one is unreal. I have a copy of one of the Allen Carr books on the table alongside me, so sometime in the next week or two I start. I'm not going to say I'm giving up though, that's too final and won't work, I'm just going to see how long I can go between fags, and tell myself I can have one if I really want. Aim is to get up to around 20 years between each fag :)
  15. See if you can pick up a copy of the "PA Bible", originally written by EV in the late seventies, but regularly updated. There are often versions available on ebay, and it's a very worthwhile investment, will give you an invaluable reference guide for all sorts of PA and speaker type questions, everyone should own a copy imho :)
  16. Ditto that, nothing like the 12" version of "searching" by Change to wade into the sossie rolls and take a nice long natural break :)
  17. Sounds like nephews is the way to go looking at the replies :) Why no under 18's in pub venues? Most of the pubs around here have 14/15 year olds working in the kitchen/waitressing, I thought it was over 18's behind the bar only, or am I missing something?
  18. I really hope you're not right I've always believed, maybe hoped, that the average punter would at least be able to recognise and enjoy a bit of quality and clarity in the sound system, or at the very least be aware of the lack of it. Am I just being naive then? I can quite believe that with lights, people just see flashing disco lights unless you have something to really blow them away, but I'd be quite upset if everybody viewed sound the same way.
  19. OK, having just done my second gig in five years, it looks as though the bug has truly bitten once more, and I'm going back into this :) My question (one among millions) is, do you use a roadie? and if so what do you pay him/her? I always flew solo before, or worked with a mate who also DJ'ed, but as I've now hit forty, and have a fairly physical dayjob the thought of basebins and stairs seems a bit more daunting than it once did. My nephew is very keen, and at 15 has a bedroom full of Maplins type disco lights and a cd mixer etc, so would be an obviouse choice, but am interested to know
  20. Just signed up and thought I'd say hello. Some nice reading matter on here :) I guess I'll bore you with a little bit about me, I'm a sparky by day (electrician), and bought my first mobile disco when I was 17, as soon as I had a car and license to haul it around, that was back in 1984. I did mobile discos for a couple of years, then moved into clubs for about 3 years, before going back to the mobiles. I kept going until about 5 years ago, when I decided I'd had enough of it as I was silly busy and travelling a lot with work too. However, I've just agreed to do a few nights for the clubho
  21. Just wondered whether people are getting CRB checks done to do school discos, or proms as they now prefer to call them. I do a bit of work in local schools, and they are all quite hot on it now, I'm assuming a disco on the premises would be the same.
