  1. The effect of the output switching from left to right speakers is "Panning". Some mixers have a PAN control on each channel to allow you to set that channels postitioning within the Stereo arena. I've seen this used to quite good effect where more than one DJ/presenter/speaker (human not speaker cabinet ) is present - the person with the mic on the left of the stage has their channels PAN set may 30% to the left, and the person on the right...their mic channel is panned 30% to the right... it gives the person speaking a bit more "prescence" and, whilst still clearly audible through
  2. Depending on any small print on those download sites themselves - you should be fine - as the dubbing license only relates to tunes which have had their purchased format changed FROM the format which they were originally purchased in, TO a different format. eg: If you download a tune in MP3 format from a legal download site, and store it and play it in MP3 format then you've not changed the format from that which the file was originally purchased in, so...no dubbing/format change has taken place. But...if you purchase a tune as say...a CD single, or a CD album, or a viny
  3. One of the last few double male acts that were funny, imo. They were funny, a little risque (microwaving "kittens" etc), without crossing into the "trying too hard to be funny by being just rude" in the way that I feel unwatchable (for these reasons) Little Britain and League/Gentlemen fall foul of. I'm off for a Hedgehog Sandwich - (now thats another old show which I'd like to see the series's repeated).
  4. What sort of extra features did you have in mind Dan? I'm all ears, and certainly a feature which was suggested by a member of DJU has previously been implimented by Denon DJ on a Denon DN-HD2500 and their other professional media controllers in the range. The idea went from DJU member to units Worldwide, free, in a matter of a few months. As for the mixers, both the DN-X500 and DN-X900 are instantly 19inch rack mount mixers, both offering 4 channels and 2 mic inputs. The main differences are that the x900 offers Digital Inputs (handy as the DN-HD2500 offers Digital O
  5. I think that's quite possibly the key concern; dubbing means more copies are brought into existence, and therefore in some cases, into use. Perhaps we could do with Woolworths selling "Now" albums etc on "Mussion Impossible" sources CDs... "This original CD will self-destruct 5 seconds after dubbing..................tssssssssssssssssssssshhh"
  6. I'd class this, and certain other instances as sheer profitteering. Just like on the night of the dreadful London bombings, when it looked like no train/tube or bus was safe to commute home in/on, some London Hotels whacked their room prices up in multiples - you can guess the public reaction to those premises. It was very brief light relief to see one of the TV news reporters actually mention one of the wretched places - eg: "I'm standing here in front of just one of the many hotels whos room rates have rocketed at the news of..." At the other end of the sneaky pricing scale, I've encou
  7. Quite right TonyB, I didn't exaplin myself very well at all on that one. What I meant was, if I receive £25,000 in a tax year for DJing related activities and spend £25,000 in the same tax year ON DJ related activites/expenses/equipment/dubbing license/PLI/PAT,music etc, then my profit will be £0.00 which I'd have to pay to Mr Inland Rev. Although it never seems to work out quite like that ...(and I still think that last years tax bill should be allowable as one of this years expenses - but hey, ho... that's another story. ) Those people claiming that the dubbing license isnt neede
  8. Finally !!! Right. Now where did I put my chequebook. For anyone who dubbs music for their profession at their choice, and let's not forget, whether to play music from the medium on which we bought it, or making a copy/dub of it to another medium IS our choice - this licence, at the end of each tax year costs inland revenue registered/self-assessment DJs...effectively £0.00 - just like any business expense. As a business trophy to sit alongside PAT and PLI, there's no reason for a dubber not to have it.
  9. Now about those Spy satellites... What the heck...yes, sure. How about this though...assuming that its a good crowd, out to enjoy themselves etc,etc,etc...are there any songs which you'd think about DEFINATELY playing, or definately NOT playing, or any of your usual announcements / crowd interactions which you would do/not do/adjust, taking into account the the lack of any clothing - both theirs and yours. * I'm thinking that the lines on the floor for the Rowing boat song would definately HAVE to be boy, girl, boy, girl from one end to the other...oar el

    New Idea

I've seen something like that done before. The difficulty is that the smallest lead, or box, or bag (or pint) which ends up under the table, in the light path is going to show up as a shadow to the audience - not good, unless you're planning on doing Shadow Rabbits to keep the kids happy. However - with that little pitfall covered - if you've got lots of space behind your disco setup, and can definately ensure a "quarantined" area of space under the table, between the light source and the sheet/screen, then even something basic, like a couple of crossed LED colour floods

    Wedding Music

Kidding? No. Using the mentioned track "Horny" as a starter, it gives a certain clue as to what upset the hirers father. This thread, indeed has come up with ideas as to other tracks which might offend - admittedly some suggestions were a little tongue-in-cheek, but a simple list of maybe 30 or so tracks which contain profanity, swearing, sexual innuendos (don't they make Games Consoles?) and avoiding playing anything on that list on the night would at least show the hirer that we are taking her seriously - the rest of the wording is basically saying "but if we play som
  12. Well now...that would be mentioned on a whole new thread if/when such a piece of equipment were launched. :ads: Mind you I've seen both the DN-HD2500 and the DN-HC4500 being used to control video on a fairly high end desktop PC outputing to a pair of 42'' LCD panels - so you could use either of these Denon's or for tabletop/flatbed style deck control, you can also use the DN-HS5500 direct drive platter / Hard Drive controller / MIDI controller, or the even newer DN-S1200 CD deck, Hard Drive Controller and MIDI controller to control something like PCDJ VJ, today.

    Wedding Music

I think that proceeding with caution would be a good idea - on top pf what you've already done - eg: Preparation. Telling her that you cant be expected to know what might or might not upset her father, whilst totally true, isnt going to accomplish anything postive - it'll probably raise her stress levels everytime she thinks of the evening part of the wedding (even though I've no reason to believe that she'd have anything to worry about in you). ...and if she tells her father, then he's gonna be gunning for you, even before you set foot on the venues gravel driveway... So
  14. I've noticed a rise in this too, over the last 2 or 3 years I'd say. . A couple of these have even been where the B&G had their wedding abroard, then stayed out there for the honeymoon. Which makes perfect sense really - and means that only the closest of their family and friends are there with them, to be catered for. - Saves all the hassle of those awful decisions about seating plans, and other family Vs Family type decisions. The only negative I think is that the UK reception, sometimes 2 -8 weeks later just doesnt have the same feel to it - and I've tried to assess them with
  15. Exactly. Ok, so "Cheryl" could have a DJing background, or could be a DJ herself etc...but, taking her comments at face value, she's a member of the public - the same public who we "sell" ourselves to. The same public who, through various e-comms and e-communities, such as wedding forums, and radio programs being distributed to people far far out of local radio station range via podcasts etc and could easily pick up on Cheryls comments." Having positive comments ready, or indeed dismissing potential quagmires before they arise during a future enquiry starts questioning part of wha
  16. I've been using a DN-HD2500 for almost 18 months now, and I also demonstrat them to othe DJs at DJ trade shows etc - fantastic bit of kit, which I personally would trust the reliability of over and above the laptop idea which you mentioned. Many many DJs have reported quirky laptop problems at gigs over many years along the lines of "got halfway through my gig the other night when my laptop suddenly..." - too many variables, perhaps. As you say of course, a DN-HD2500 is more "hands on" for DJing than a mouse and a mouse mat - Although the 2500 can be used as a MIDI controller for m
  17. Glad to read you're enjoying the lack of slowing and other features in the new firmware. you're right about domant time/inactivity causing your remaining performance problem - but its the external hard drive causing it. Some external drives have a spindown or sleep timer on them eg: the drive thinks "hmmm I've not been asked to read or write anything for the last fx minutes, I'll stop my motor and have a snooze. I'll spin my motor back up to reading speeds in a few long seconds after something out there asks me to read or write again". I don't know which external drive you use but
  18. Hmmm well a couple of pointers there... He's happily mentioned that the DJ gets paid for "playing a few tunes" between 7:30 and 12:00 - but forgets to mention (well, it would be bad radio to...) that the same DJ was actually the one getting drenched lugging the gear in, between 5 and 7:30 - and (just after he'd dried off) getting drenched again between 12: and 1:30 - packing up in the rain, under an outside light which, despite you flicking every switch you can find, doesnt actually work. And...his irish wedding comment - just shows that HE had a lack of planning, when he
  19. Handle the person who came up....chances are they didn't have a long walk - the ones who moan its too loud are usually the ones who picked the table right next to the dancefloor and the speakers...right? I would tell the person who came up that I appreciate him telling me that, as it's obviously a little different "out there" than it is for me "back here" (I'm not going to get into sound field dynamics and temporary threshold shift). I'll follow up my thanks for him/her mentioning it to me, by confirming that on-one else had mentioned it so far, but that I would check how everyone

    How Many...

I agree. The "decade theme nights" seem to shift up, along with the flow of time. eg: Sixties theme nights were the big "in thing" about 20 years ago, then it moved up to "70's night" about 10 years ago, now its "80s nights"...logically, its gotta be "90's nites" pretty soon. My personal view on this evolution of decade theme nights is that its people reliving their youth/drinking/partying days.

    How Many...

Ditto that - I hate playing any track more than once at a function. If I get absolutely overwhelmed by requests (in different handwritting, or from different mobile numbers sms/txt) then I will play a track a 2nd time that night but usually near the end, not just a few minutes later than the first play. More commonly however, if I'm playing a track and its getting considerable positive audience reaction, I'll add a seamless loop to it, thereby extending it to give the crowd their fill of the track until the positive reaction fades.
  22. Glad to read that you're enjoying your 2500. I used mine for 2 gigs over the weekend also, and like you, had no problems - thats over a dozen live gigs for me on the v1300 and all is good.. The 2500 and the firmware are both working fine for you and I and the vast majority. Obviously, from reading the posts alongside yours two users here have a query or two. if their queries were related to the firmware, every user would be getting the same performance issues. I'll PM both Tonsk and Elite shortly.
  23. True...tis a nice jesture... Another nice jesture is that the sentimental bride and groom will keep all their wedding cards, and a few months/years down the line, when one of their guests needs a disco and asks the happy(still?) couple for the details of that awfully nice chap/chapette, who did their wedding all those months/years ago...the details will be to hand...(well, in a box in the loft...but...nearby...) Better than something else I tried for a while...my contact details printed on the label on a bottle of chamagne (well...Asti)....They're all usually within the l
  24. I can heartily recommend checking out the above link/supplier - as it's actually the manufacturer themselves. I've ordered more items from them, Andy and the guys over the last few years due to the great customer service they offer. If, for example, you want the stand customised - ask them. When I ordered their Pro Stand (nicknamed the "Winch'n'Wheel" stand - reviewed here on DJU in fact) I wanted the crossbars (which form the shelf for your gear) to be lower than the standard...they obliged with that, and a couple of other modifications with virtually no extra lead time/delay
  25. Good testing. Was all the testing done on just one side of the deck? Eg: Just using the left side controls. Absolutely no one else, worldwide, has reported on a forum, or to Denon US or UK any intermittant Hot list adding. I'm suspecting the "Pitch bend +" button at the moment... , hence wondering if you'd been trying loading the hot list from both left and right sides of the unit (the idea being that having 2 pitch bend buttons "go", is less likely). The sloooooow track playback if occuring on the internal drive is extremely uncommon, and I would suspect the one-off
