  1. I once slipped and fell whilst carrying a box of 7inch singles down a frosty fire escape a few years ago. I managed to loose a few records but none were damaged however I have never trusted fire escapes since. There wasn't a fire by the way, it was the quickest way up to the room (and down :aa )
  2. Amazing - I was really worried about that fan though, I thought someone might stick their hand in it :fright:
  3. Even better money saving tip - Don't get married :hide:
  4. Nice one - (from another old fart)

    Mary J Blige

That would be a great help to me, as I don't get out much either
  8. I know I will regret doing this but in order to take the pressure off poor Brian here is another for you to look at, i mean laugh at OMG . http://img74.imageshack.us/img74/3487/mickwithwigge2.th.jpg
  9. With respect it dosn't quite work like that, there are plenty of good DJ's in my area who all charge less than £200 for an average gig, and I mean they are good and well established. I could easily put my charges up to £350 - 500 and sit at home most of the time. You are not going to get that sort of money in my loction and that is fact. By the way I am not against us all charging more, and I know that I am worth it, and in a perfect world what you say makes perfect sense, but I have worked for myself in this area since 1975 and I know what people will pay for an evenings entertainment. I
  10. One thing that is very clear from this thread is that there is a massive difference between the north and south on what people will pay for a disco. And note, I said what people will pay, not what you can charge.
  11. I voted number 4 also (sorry Andy). I think that maybe less is more if you know what I mean but it could be the yellow that scared me off. I quite liked the shadow dancers in the background and I think they may be a bit lost on a deeply coloured card. I do like your general layout simple and to the point.
  12. Never let the snow stop me getting to a gig, plan ahead, go early, take the 4x4 whatever  By the way Duksy we get snow like that in June in Buxton :omg:
  13. Just read it, nice one Andy, keep doing a few and be choosy, sounds like my approach to the job - Mick
  14. That must be some bulb, my first van cost less than that lol.
  15. My daughter did her first gig completely on her own over a year ago, it was a christmas party that she covered for me. She did the same gig this year as I was open with my fairground ride, I called in at 11.30 when I closed, and sat at the back watching her with a busy dancefloor and I was very proud as I am sure Brian and Ian are also of their offsprings. My son who is 12 plays piano, keyboard and theatre organ, he entertained the Rotary Club pre-disco one evening and once again I was so proud. I think what Paula says is right, don't force your kids to do DJ'ing or anything else for that matt
  16. Made my day that kingy, just how it is, sums it up perfectly
  17. The main thing with kids parties Brian, is not the equipment its been able to keep 20 or so little darlings happy for a couple of hours, It is very difficult and it took me a while to get the hang of it but I can do it now and love doing these sort of gigs. But for a youngster it is going to be a lot more difficult. My kids have helped me at all my gigs since they were about 8 but my daughter who is now 17 finds it easier to do a gig on her own for the Rotary club than a kids party. This is not meant to be a negative view but just a point of view from somebody who has been there. Best wishes
  18. Could easily do DJ'ing full time as the work is there, but I am also am in the motor trade, the wife and myself have old time fairground rides that we travel all summer, and some commercial property that we rent out, so time is the main issue for us. DJ'ing is something that I always wanted to do and I started very late in life, but the disco job has taken off more than I imagined as there are plenty of DJ's around me who are also busy, I do regular disco work at a restaurant (once a month) and a bit of mobile work as well. My problem is that I enjoy all my work too much to pack any of it in,
  19. No! this never happens to me :hide: Just joking of course it does, my memory is nearly as old as me, now what was the question :ouch:
  20. This is very interesting and shows that certain tracks seem to be popular all over the country and are asked for at nearly every gig. ie - Brown eyed girl (I get asked for this almost every week). What a good idea Ian, I hand out request slips but never keep them and analyse the frequency of popularity as you have done, there you go another new year resolution to keep - mick

    Rock Compilations

I did a gig very similar to this a couple of years ago and as I only have the popular rock stuff, this was only partly what they wanted. They brought me some of their favorite albums and marked what tracks they wanted and it was a great night. I only have a general knowledge of rock, and although I like stuff like this, don't really feel as knowledgeable and confident as say Big Ben is to fill a night with this type of music. Their choice was a great help and it was a brill gig. I am sure you will get more help on this forum, but don't be afraid of asking the B&G for some albums as I am su
  22. Active (Alto's) at most gigs but my old Peavey amp and Passive speakers added to mixer in very large venues.
  23. Leaving all the petty bickering aside and back to the original thread, I still think that every situation is different and we are also different as individual people. I DJ as a business and as such I do need to make money from the job as I suspect do many others on this forum. I am also not really driven by money, if I wanted to make big money I could find easier ways than DJ'ing I am sure. I can see all points of views on this but I myself would do what I felt was right. I am not a soft touch, but in general most people are decent with me and as such deserve decent treatment in return. As f
  24. I have actually had a situation when the snow stopped a gig and I did not charge a fee or withhold the deposit. My god although I need the money but I am not that desperate. Under the original senario I would ask if insurance were paying out on the function and if so would claim. I would not hit the poor B & G for even more expense if they were not covered though. I have two successful business's and their success is 100% due to the way I treat my customers/clients so I have to go with Nik and Chris on this one. Oh and by the way the client who I did not charge for the snow cancelled
  25. I can't believe I am reading some of the comments above, for gods sake I run a mobile disco and am proud of it, Profesional disc jockey would confuse the hell out of my clients, they ring up to book a DISCO, I play music, popular music, I play what people ask for and I play what I think other people will like. I try and play something for everyone even if you cannot dance to it, I just use my skills to play it at a suitable time. I would not start to define cheese, It seems to me that anything dancy and decent is cheese, so what, that's what gets me booked gain and again. And I play loads o
