  1. No "era" was mentioned. They are having a band on as well whose set consists mainly of all the favourite "safe" rock covers such as Stuck in the middle with you, Bon Jovi stuff, Brown eyed girl and some more modern safe rock stuff. They have requested that they do not want the evening to be cheesy and want the DJ, (me) to keep the song intros and general chit chat to a minimum. Which is fine by me i can tell you! I think that maybe the bride and groom perceive themselves as being sophisticated and wish to prove this to their guests in their choice of music and do not want the party to turn i
  2. There is a song by the rolling stones which is called "Biggest Mistake, or , Greatest Mistake" which i was once asked to play at a wedding as a joke on the Bride and Groom. Ho ho! Bob
  3. Hi all, Have been asked by a client that amongst the preferred music they would like at their wedding reception they would like some "Guitar Based Indie". Can anybody tell me if anyone has been asked for this before and is it different from normal Indie which i would class as Kaiser Chiefs, Fratellis, Arctic Monkeys, etc etc etc? Thanks in advance for your input! Bob
  4. I have just bought a very interesting book from Amazon. Its called "Is this thing on" by Gordon McComb It is a paperback and was very cheap!(£1.50) Although that was a second hand one but in mint condition. It explains in plain english how sound works, how to set up a sound system etc etc. If (like me) you are able to plug it all in, make it make a noise and thats about your lot, it is invaluable. This is what it says on the rear cover. "Is this thing on" is a useful guide for anyone who needs to design, purchase, install, maintain or operate a public sound system
  5. Thanks for that!!! I do use a ground loop isolator and i recommend that anyone using a laptop uses one. I use the laptop alongside my Twin CD player, this works really well for me as i have used just CD's for the past 8 years and now i use the laptop alongside allowing me to get used to the nuances of electronic deejaying but without spoiling it for the audience if i make a mistake!! Plus it comes into its own when a toilet visit is necessary and the automix feature in the playlist is utilised!!! Bob
  6. Welcome! I don't suppose your DJ name has got anything to do with your car registration number has it???!!!! Bob
  7. Thanks for all your comments guys. Am going to go with the 2 amp 6 speaker idea and see how it goes. The gig is a bit of a one off and i cannot justify spending a load of cash on a more powerful system at the moment.(But i would love to don't get me wrong!) My usual venues suit the rig perfectly, i am nice and busy and nothing has let me down so far. I will report back on how the evening went on the 7th September and i will be brutally honest with you all with how it went. I am hoping to learn a lot from it and who knows, i may just be able to provide some advice myself!!
  8. Thanks for that. To be honest, i was going to give it a go anyway and yes, use this gig as an excuse. I can always turn it down a bit if venue turns out to be not as described!!!! You watch, it will turn out to be a bloody 3 man tent!!!! Do you ever get on of those gigs where you think, right, i am really going to push the boat out on this one? This is one of those times! I am expecting the night to be an absolute cracker and i really want to put on a good show. 6 speakers at the front along with my newly upgraded lighting rig (which i am dead chuffed w
  9. Thanks for your input Ben, Please do not laugh at the speakers..........! 15" Skytronic Bass Bins 300watt (pair of) 12" Skytronic Tops 150watt (pair of) 600watt Warrior Amp Behringer VMX1000 mixer I must confess even though the speakers are cheap and cheerful, i have heard a lot worse and they have been very very robust and reliable. For a disco environment i think they do a good job. To be fair i would like to upgrade soon, but have been spending most of my money on upgrading my lighting effects. The other two speakers are a pair of Kam cabinets, with three piezo
  10. At the moment, especially at 30th and 40th parties, Mamma Mia by Abba is well and truly back in circulation due to the massive success of the film, Take That-Relight my fire is always a sure fire floor filler, i agree with the Zorbas Dance by LCD track and tell me ma by Sham Rock and of course the cha cha slide. One of my favourite winding up the night tracks is Country Roads by The Hermes House Band. (This always seems to go down really really well!) For younger age groups at the moment 90's dance music classics such as Dreamer, Show me love, The key the secret etc etc are very v
  11. Ah! Now i understand. Brilliant. Thank you for your replies. Told you i knew nothing about it! I shall stop thinking about it and do what we all do best, play good music and keep em dancin! Bob
  12. Thanks for that! With regards to the soaking the sound up comment i made (and i know nothing about this to be honest!) i am rightly or wrongly under the impression that the more fabric in a room, it tends to soak the sound up. Is this right? For instance i did a gig a couple of weeks ago in a hall which had no fabric in it whatsoever and it had a wooden floor, and my rig sounded a lot louder. Having said that, it may have been that a lot of the noise was bouncing back at me which when you are usually stood behind the speakers you don't normally hear. At most venues that i do there is a
  13. Welcome to the Forum!! Ask away!! Bob
  14. Hi all. I know i can rely on you guys for some good input so any ideas on this proposed set up would be very welcome. I am due to do a wedding gig in a marquee in a couple of weeks time. I just know that the marquee is going to soak up a lot of the sound and although i do not know the dimensions of the marquee, i guess it is going to be quite large as it is costing my client 4.5k and there are approx 250 guests coming. Gulp..... At present i run a 600w amp with a pair of 300watt bass bins and 150watt tops. I also have a pair of 300watt full range speakers. I am th
  15. Ok, i was exaggerating but i find that by about 10pm most people are either too drunk or too tired to get up and have a boogie, because it has been such a long day, which is understandable. Having said that, the people who have only been able to make it to the night do seem to inject a bit of liveliness back into it. And i have done wedding do's which have turned out to be great. I am booked for one in Sepetember which is in a big marquee, and the bride and groom are actually getting married in Turkey next week. The do in the marquee is just a night do. I am looking forward very
  16. I wonder if any one can help me. Have been a mobile dj for approx 8 or 9 years now and to cut a very long story short, i now offer karaoke to my clients. I am not very experienced with Karaoke and would like a bit of info if anyone can help. The microphones that i let the punters use are ok, but budget ones. I run a karaoke program through a laptop and the microphones are attached directly to the mixer as normal. I have no effects what so ever on the mixer or on the karaoke program. I have been told by a few colleagues who have done a bit of singing that i could r
  17. I totally agree. They are way way way too long. For all the reasons listed above. I hate em with a passion!!! Bob
  18. Aha! I am glad we are on this subject! I too am in a similar situation and i do a little bit of karaoke. What i want to know is this: Is a reverb unit a necessity when doing karaoke? I must admit, that the vocals do not sound brilliant when people are doing karaoke straight through the mike with no effects. Any recommendations tips/ advice greatly receieved!!! Bob
  19. I think i have a theory on this topic. There is a lot of current music which has samples from oldies used as a base track. The latest one that springs to mind is the girl group the Saturdays whose current single (the title escapes me for the minute!) has yazoos "situation" hit as a sample. It sounds really good and was doing well in the charts. There have been lots of tunes recently of this ilk about and i think this broadens the kids of todays music spectrum. Well, thats my theory anyway!!!! Bob
  20. Thanks for that, the back of the amp has two jack outputs (that the speaker leads plug in to) and 2 speakon outputs. It also has two binding post outposts. The rest of the available sockets are inputs. Bob
  21. Good afternoon all! I am not very technical and wondered if anybody out there could help. I am toying with the idea of running 6 speakers at an upcoming gig in a large marquee. At the moment i run 4 speakers (two 150w tops and two 300w bassbins) from a 600watt warrior is600 amp and the size of the venues i normally do, this set up is sufficient. How do i run 6 speakers using another amp? I have a pair of spare 250 watt midrange speakers which i would use. Is it just a case of plugging another amp in to the mixer (Behringer VMX1000) and if so, what do you do?
