  1. This is something I've often thought about and like many dj's acting as MC as well is something I've done. But like others have already suggested, the roll of the Toastmaster is like that of the DJ - a lot of folk think a dj just stands there and pushes a button and the music plays - a toastmaster bangs the table and announces the speeches / toasts. But those of us that have worked with good toastmasters will know that their service goes way beyond this and I would liken them to a fairy godmother making sure that everything is perfect on the day - a good toastmaster will have contac
  2. C'mon guys - PLEASE do not let this go any further!!! Vinnie
  3. Good thread!!!! There are always two sides to this kind of thing - Back to the first post, if the set up areas were to be discussed then that's what should have happened. If I had been treated like Welshy by a band I would have gloated about getting 500 notes out of them! As has been said what goes around comes around etc. All that said, I have always taken the view that in most cases where I am playing with a band then I take on more of a support role, I will fit in around the band with regards to space, music, set times etc. And let's be fair most bands I have played alongside
  4. I've only had a couple so far, and had a good dance floor response to it. I think it's good to be able to find even a small set of most genres, and important to know what might be coming up request wise. I, like many get confused with some newer dance genres - and like most, I agree that the public also seem confused - but with the great knowledge base here, we can all at least have a little something up our sleeves. Sometimes all that's needed is to ask for a few pointers from someone that knows and likes the genre (as I certainly have), and you may be pleasently surprised.
  5. I'm with Danno on this one - well kind of. If I find a dj for an enquiry then I ask for a "finders fee" from the dj, this is not a cut / percentage and goes towards my advertising costs. What I have found strange is one dj that charged £175 for a Saturday to cover a wedding reception, not being sure if he wanted to give me £25 finders fee for a gig of this type paying £350  That said I don't expect a finders fee if the gig is not paying what I would expect it to. So, in summary, sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. I don't think I'm robbing anyone (I hope I'm
  6. Congratulations matey  Vinnie
  7. I guess I ought to comment on these threads as I have a passing interest http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/fear.gif Having been interested both personally and on behalf of SEDA members, it's still not clear what's going on http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/rolleyes.gif One thing that always gets mixed up though is PPL's interest - this is not performance related but because they look after the copyright of the original sound recording, and it is for making copies of the original sound recording that the licence was put forward........ Please be assured where
  8. Brian I've never noticed that number plate before - you old tart! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/tongue.gif Vinnie Oops - old red High Top LWB convoy (yeah we do parcels as well http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif ) Vinnie

  10. I hope to have something to bring in the next week or so to this thread (if it's still running). I've just had a call with contact details of a pretty upmarket venue local to me down here in the SE. A networking contact of mine happenend to meet the General Manager and mentioned me and how I work with clients offering a fully consultative service (including some of the things Chris mentioned above, like personal meetings, music input etc), and the GM said he would be interested in talking with me. I know this venue operates with their own DJ's exclusively, and charges a good wack for a
  11. This has been a very thought provoking thread, and now I remember what I've been missing (not being around for a while). CS makes a very valid point and one most would understand, that said, the venues that I have come across that enforce an in house DJ have come from the other side of the fence. Their motives have nothing to do with maintaining standards or reputation, and as in the topic case, they do not make the fact that they dictate choice of DJ, upfront. To make things worse they do not even admit that they dictate to the client, they invent excuses such as "we have to name DJ's to ge
  12. Hi everyone, Not been around much but I've had this wierd niggle about a track I seem to remember but can't for the life of me recall the artist. Does anyone know of a disco / high energy version of the Hollies "I'm Alive" - I'm guessing at a late seventies / eighties date. Not much to go on but ................. 13. QUOTE (analyst @ Jul 9 2006, 03:00 PM) QUOTE (Vinnie @ Jul 7 2006, 02:57 PM)QUOTE (welshyDJ18 @ Jul 6 2006, 06:49 PM) Poison (club version) cant think of artist Groove Coverage - I think Vinnie IMHO the only Poison worth listening to is by Alice Cooper - def not Clubby music tho'. No argument here - MASSIVE Alice Fan and original cooper trooper. Vinnie http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/thumbup.gif

  15. I'm in it and it works for me - no I'm not just starting (although the business is fairly young) and I'm not cheap. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/533.gif A couple of points though - my conversion rate is only around 40% (so there are price shoppers out there, but some people do have a limited (unrealistic) buget), and I do sell to them. Vinnie
  16. I fully understand the doubts and we have already asked for comments from both PPL and MCPS - until we get those responses, I for one am not going to try to second guess their answer (that's why the cork is still in the champagne bottle http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/tongue.gif ) However most of the you're different cos you earn money from it arguments do have counter arguments. I still think this is good news - yes the law still stands (as it always has) but at the moment there is no money in it for them really. Maybe we should just wait and see. I get the feeling the
  17. Not really Marc, this should be exactly the same as taking your cd (which is for personal use) into a licenced venue. Remember the PPL & MCPS are not talking about performance licences. The existing PPL Licence and the proposed MCPS licence is about copying music from 1 format to another. This has gotta be good news. Vinnie
  18. Have a look at this then http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/whistling.gif http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/5053658.stm Vinnie http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/thumbup.gif
  19. As said - well done http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/toot.gif Just goes to show that sometimes when a client may seem unreasonable they may in fact be far from it - just very concerned that everything is going to go well. Remaining polite and professional as you did can pay off. Once again - WELL DONE!!!!!! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/thumbup.gif Vinnie
  20. Hi Andy As far as MCPS are concerned that is definately a possibility ( http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif ). They are looking at a much more user freindly licence. As Robbie has already stated the main problem may be the price. Vinnie
  21. As far as I know most legal downloads allow you to copy to cdr. If this is so then the cdr is viewed as if it were an original cd. But it depends on the licence agreement for the download. Legal downloads (burned to cdr or transferred to hard-drive / laptop)(if allowed by the download licence) are not subject to the PPL digital dj licence. Vinnie
  22. Good luck with it http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/thumbup.gif Vinnie
  23. I remember driving on my own down the A299 on the way out to Margate for work and a song came on the radio that just touched a nerve, I had to pull over and my eyes just welled up. Everything but the girl - Each and every one No particular reason, like I say it just seememd to touch a nerve. Vinnie
  24. Only ever had one problem with these and that was at a venue where in addition to the volume cutting the power there was also a trip on an exit door which the groom managed to open about 2 minutes from my finish time - great way to end the night. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/sterb188.gif Vinnie
  25. Have skimmed through topic - so I hope I'm not repeating spmething. I use ali - Flight cases Like Ian, but use the case logic "pro-sleeves" - These are the same as the wallet sleeves but individual, which means you can use them with the flight case. I have also taken to reprinting track lists (black on white) to make them easier to read. One of the other bonus's of this is the ease of re-jiging when you want to add to the collection. Vinnie PS - That really does look organised Ian http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/notworthy.gif
