  2. Yes I did and also pointed out that he run the risk of prosecution for his ripped off music and software. I would like to see this type of practice stamped out. In the good old days we all had to pay for our music unless it was taped off the radio, but then you got all the hiss..... Technology has improved at a quick pace making it possible for anyone to become a "DJ" in the loose sense. NYE was all about the biggest party of the year... Not anymore.. I spent last night at home with my teenage sons (19 & 17) with some of their freinds for a small get together as they wouldn'
  3. I have to agree thing arn't what they used to be. I went to a local pub with the wife because there was a dj...He had a great sound system but had no personality might as well had a jukebox in the corner. I went up to see him and got chatting to him and he was getting pair £10.00 per hour to play his tunes!! I said how can you afford to buy the equipment and music his reply was to download it for free off the internet. He buys cheap lighting and uses his laptop and a mixer with a single cd player. NO PLI No PAT Test how can we compete with this? I was earning this sort of money per
  4. To be honest the guy didnt seem to put off anyone the set was an 1 1/2 hours long and the guy only sang 2 songs. one at the beginning and the last song then handed over to me and the show band. As for entering the a mixing compitition you may well come accross Carl Cox but if he is having a bad day anyone could win! I saw this happen at a local club where EZ had a real hard time ad was not his usual hyped up self.
  5. smile icon You had to see it the guy was a classical singer by trade and was hired to run these events by the management company smile icon
  6. Now here is my 2p worth I recently worked with a company at The Kensington Roof Gardens who supplied and oprarated the Karaoke. They used 2 50" screens facing (Set up high on Dressing) the audience with one VC camera on the singer. The guy operating the Karaoke was well presented (Tux), but was also a trained singer to get the Guests into the mood. The requests were handled by a lady in a lovely cocktail dress and all the requests were written by her and confirmed that the person requesting the song(s) were the singer(s) The evening run without a fault in a professional manor The
  7. The mixer is the weakest link - would you buy a Lambourgini and fit an mini engine in it? Speakers try before you buy - Powered - Unpowered - there is a lot of choice but remember always buy the best you can afford. As for all equipment you really should try before you buy....would you buy a care before you have had a test drive and also reviews give a good guide but it is all from the person that gave the review.
  8. I always take a 50% deposit paid within 14 days of contract signed then the final balance paid within 10 days of the function. I never accept cash on the night. Except where I have been asked to play on past the finnish time then it is to be paid 30 minutes before the end of the function as you don't want to running round chasing people who are too drunk to pay or they haven't got enough money left by the end. I also include within the contract soft drinks to be supplied through out the night to the DJ and if the function is longer that 4 hours or the need to be at the venue all day
  9. The problem was caused by a band in the summer I have been DJing there for nearly 3 years without a single complaint. I am working at the venue tonight and will find out if there has been any movement with the E.A. and see if i can plug the amp into the non sound limited source and see what happens.
  10. the database needs to run with Vista. I wouldn't be able to use the i tunes or media player as that would require me to convert my 20,000 song collection to mp3 and would take best part of 6 months to do.
  11. Can anyone recommend a user friendly CD Data Base software. I have been using Music Collector for a number of years, since they have stopped using CDDB for the on line catalogue there has been far more errors on track listings.
  12. I only have the amp plugged into the limiter the Cd players and mixer run on a 3-5 amp circuit. The company who installed the limiter have been very clever have spit all the circuits within the marquee thus rendering all the DJ scockets useless to anything over 3-5 amps. The lighting is pre installed so no problems there. On tripping out the decks and mixer carry on working the amp shuts down on tripping for 10 seconds.
  13. I have had a meeting with the Venue this morning and It has been agreed that The levels from saturdays function didn't exceed the guidelines set out by the E.A.'s original findings which were 118dB at 120 metres from the furthest point of the grounds. The figure on saturday was 63dB at 120 metres. Good news maybe that the E.A have agreed to raise the dB limit in the new year as the limiter has proved to have had a calming effect on the residents. The E.A. stated that the end figure would be set by them after consultation with the residents and the venue. The venue stated to E.A th
  14. I only too well know.. I have had 2 marriages fail because of the job. Now on number 3 and have lightened my workload to every other weekend. This occupation is a great one but has got its anti social pitfalls. A wife or partner will only take so much......... Life is for living not working so enjoy it
  15. I have been working at a local hotel for the past few months in a marquee. They have a sound limiter installed and it is very sensitive to the point that on friday night i received more that 30 complaints from the Guests some of which were abusive.... The hotel has no control over this matter as Envoirmental Health have set the criteria, If someone starts to sing along or I use the microphone it cuts the power. I have since lost 3 wedding bookings because of the limiter. Saturday saw Enviromental Health out again stating that it was too loud...I hadn't started at this point. I ha

    How Easy?

You need to pace the tempo start off with the easy lisning then build the speed / tempo.. When iI was DJing in Magaluf in the 80's I had to do a 7 hour set 6 days a week.. Just try to plan your evenings songs out.
  22. I work for a local Hotel on occasions, where they supply all the equipment with exception of the CDs, All I have to do is speak to the Bride and Groom 4 weeks prior the the Wedding and then turn up at the venue at 730 start at 8 (providing all is on time), and end at midnight. For this service I get £250.00, I don't have to lug equipment set it up, service it,repair it upgrade it etc... so i think your charges are reasonable. If i were in that situation i would state that the evening is longest single part of the day and the part that more guests will remember as more people will join
  23. Hi Folks I have now been a DJ for 25 years this month. Having started at 18 DJing in a local pub as a mobile in 1983 with my old trusty Fal Mono Decks ( I still have them) After a couple of years the mobile work was in full bloom with regular work EVERY Friday - Sunday and I had a following of fans. It was during this time I was aproached to DJ In Magaluf, The offer was made and i took the opertunty, I Jacked in my apprenticeship and followed my dream. I was now a FULL time DJ. I did 2 years in Magaluf and returned back to the UK for the next 10 years or so I workd in many clubs an
