  1. I played Thunderstruck at a silver wedding anniversary once
  2. Normally its done before the amps so it goes: Source (cd player etc) - mixer - eq - crossover - amps (2, 3 or 4 depending on how it's split so you could have sub-bass, kick bass, mid, hi) - speakers I would have thought that a decent powered mixer would have lo-pass outs on it; after all some cheap dj mixers do. Sorry I can't help further - I haven't had much experience of band mixers
  3. Yep, my mistake - just checked with PSB website and Neil Tenant was assistant editor.
  4. Ahh - that would make sense. Just a thought. (PS you gonna reply to my PM?!?!)
  5. Try Walk of Life. It goes quite nicely with Mavericks and can be a useful rescue track
  6. I saw them last year at the Eden Project and they were top notch. Fundamental is a great album. Always on my Mind was Christmas Number 1 in 1987. Chris Lowe was editor of Smash Hits magazine and Neil Tennant was also in Electronic briefly with Bernard Sumner (New Order) and Johhny Marr (ex The Smiths)
  7. I've got a dbx 223XL which I find is very good. Quiet in operation, Low cut feature, (<40hz) and a mono-sum feature (very useful). Easy to use, but could do with level meters! If you want compressors as well, have you thought about an LMS unit such as the Behringer Ultradrive so you can get it all in one unit?
  8. I've got a road ready case for my cd players, mixer and crossover and yes it's heavy but nothing is going to get damaged whilst its in there!
  9. As Bouncy said, if your cue levels are showing red, turn the gain on that channel down. The lights are showing the input level so you don't want them in the red as it will already be distorting before it gets to the eq and all the rest
  10. All of these use Windows as the operating system so are inherently unreliable. I would go for a MacBook.
  11. Basically, yes If I take a booking and then book you to do it, the client has a contract with me and I have a contract with you. The client can sue me if no dj turns up and I can sue you for not showing up. Note that I can sue you for everything the client has sued me for and all my costs in delaing with that. The only way to avoid this is to pass the client direct to the new dj and say I can't do the gig, but this person can so please talk to him/her. That way you won't be involved in contract the client makes with the new dj. Bear in mind though that if you have taken the b
  12. They write the perfect pop song. Although I can't stand Waterloo and Dancing Queen
  13. There are some interesting points Contracts do not have to be fair or equal to all parties - one can buy a brand new Rolls-Royce for 1p and as long as the elements of the contract are present, it is a valid and legally binding contract. Fairness and equality have nothing to do with it. The dj still has the right to sue the client for canceling the gig. The DJ has a duty to mitigate his loss and attempt to get some other gigs, but can sue the client for the loss of earnings. Under contract law of England and Wales there is no right to compensation, as th
  14. Yep they do! But they only tell you the amount of time delay - in order to slow down the signal you have to squeeze the speaker cables with some Power Limiting Eon (Eon because it's travelling at speed of light down the speaker cable) Clamps, made by a company called NIP who are based somewhere in China (surprise, surprise). With the Texas Instruments System Controller and a set of the NIP Power Limiting Eon clamps (it works better as an acronym), you can get exactly the delay you want.
  15. A deposit is consideration in respect of the supplier contracting to provide goods/services at a later date. It is yours, just as payment for the gig is yours. If the supplier fails to supply the goods/service at the later date (in our instance fails to turn up for the gig) then he is in breach of the contract in respect of which the deposit was consideration.
  16. I've remembered who it was who told me about the cable delay thing - it was the same guy that sold me the sky-hooks for hanging my Martins in difficult venues. I knew I'd remember!
  17. They're called calculators! Speed of Sound is 340m/s (speed of light is 3x10^8m/s) so if a you are stood 21 meters away from the front stack and 1m away from the in-fills the sound from the stack will reach you in 21/340ths of a second and from the in-fills in 1/340th of a second so you need to delay the in-fills by 20/340ths of a second or 1/17th or 0.05882352941176 seconds. I'm told, if you squeeze the speaker cable, you can slow down the signal to apply the appropriate delay. Can't remember who told me though
  18. Cheers mate! I know we discussed it, I was just after a figure like you and Bouncy have given me of "x metres is ok, don't do more than so and so".
  19. Ebay was originally set up for the guy's wife to swap Pez machines (the little sweet things). One thing I would say is that I would prefer good quality, well looked after second hand stuff than new poor stuff at the same price. If it's good quality in the first place, it is usually well looked after by the owner and will last a lot longer.
  20. As mentioned above, in a lot of situations, one doesn't need to worry about delays and speaker cable length and stuff like that, but it is worth learning about it now so that when you have a gig that requires the knowledge, you at least have a basic understanding. I always liked the technical side just as much as the dj-ing itself. As Norty said, most LMS units like the Behringer Ultradrive have delay function built in where you just tell it how far away the speakers are (and what temperature the room is!!!) and it works out the rest for you.
  21. Totally off topic, but McCardle, I love the fact that your signature quotes Phil Lynott as Nathanial in War of The Worlds! Fantastic. The band I used to work with did David Essex's daughter's wedding and it was all I could do not to exclaim "good heavens, the artillaryman". Bows and arrows against the lightening!
  22. Oh right - thanks for the tip! I rarely use a strobe so don't know if I'll notice that and, actually, I quite like slow strobe (although 1fps is a bit too slow). Maybe time to sell my Egos...
  23. The EFX500 is what I would be buying if I was buying now and, in fact, what I might still get, if I sell 3 of my Egos
