  1. Nice buy, my first album purchase too. First 7" I actually owned was Christie - Yellow River. We had lots of 45's in our house but they belonged to my parents. This one was bought because I asked for it. I also asked for Dawn - Candida and Mungo Jerry - In The Summertime but my collection started when Slade released Coz I Luv You. First 45 I actually bought with my own pocket money was either T-Rex - Solid Gold Easy Action or Sweet - Blockbuster, which ever came out first.
  2. Cheers Mitch, it's only about two years old. Thing is I seem to get older every day?
  3. Cheers Guys, I appreciate the advice and TonyB, I'm sure I can fit a beer in somewhere? I don't consider myself 'having a hard time of it' more than most others. I know my life is different to most and I value things in a different way. I've been dealt a few blows that taught me a harsh lesson but then I've also been taken care of by friends and family that are worth their weight in gold. I also have a fellow DJ who feeds me most of my work (cheers Gary), more so than my costly ads. I know he earns from the bookings but he keeps me working at a reasonable rate of pay. It was Gary th
  4. It would be prudent to put a little away each time one gets paid but unfortunately...it don't work like that? In my experience, between this payday and the next, some bugger will have sent a bill through. Oh for the chance to blow some green without a care. Having said that, you paint a very sensible businesss picture Mr McCardle. :nbow:
  5. What kind of help... a loan? :ads: Thanks Dukesy, I don't need help mate, all I need is some good, honest work. I have a long and convaluted history that has little to do with my Disco biz so I won't bore you with it. The important crux of it all is.... I'm 50 this summer, I've had no 9-5 for the past few years, have little in the way of skills and experience which under today's climate means little chance of getting a job. The crazy thing is, in the 80's I could get a job easy because you didn't have to meet criteria. You had an interview in which they spoke plain English an
  6. I've never even taken a deposit? Strange, isn't it. I worked word of mouth and I only been stitched up twice. I like to pick the money up on the night, preferably before the gig. I don't like having it before the date coz it's gone and I feel like I'm working for nothing. It's all a question of faith, I guess. I'm not naive and I know there are plenty of people out there that will stitch me up. Twice I've lost a gig without being told. Once I turned up to find another DJ already set up. Once I got asked to play for another two hours and then they refused to pay the extra they'd prom
  7. Unfortunately, I am self employed. My disco is my only job over the last year or two. I wasted £600 in advertising and made friends with the taxman only to see the bottom fall out of the market. The worst year I've ever had and I have one wedding in May with no venue yet? Oh well, no worries with the mortgage cos I lost my house.
  8. Or even better, take a cut of the takings? exbutlinred82, it's not the Landlords, its the Breweries...
  9. Interesting thread. Back in the mid 90's, I played a regular Friday Night simply for the experience. It was a learning curve because I'd never played to the public and wasn't sure how I would fare. I was on the books as a barman and got paid a minimum hourly rate. My wife, at the time, was a manager in the venue and over the course of time that I played there she watched the bar takings quadruple. Comparing it with the previous years takings for the same period, it had more than doubled. The brewery was aware of this but still refused to make any provision for an entertainment budget. That, g
  10. Hi guys, I'm Mick and I've been a mobile party DJ since the mid 90's. I've always been into my music, well beyond obsession, and was always the one in charge of the home stereo when we had our family parties. My musical interest is across the board, running from Soul to Rock and including Jazz, Classical and World music in varying degrees, simply because time waits for no man. Like most, I caught Disco Fever in the late 70's and when I got a car I began clubbing and wished I could be a Club DJ. When the Electro boom started in the 80's I got hooked up in the cutting and scratching.
