  1. Jeez if I was out 6 nights a week my OH would go mental. I had a very busy summer, was out minimum 2 nights a week and usually 3, as well as working a full time job and it caused alot of problems, mainly because we have kids and all the childminding was falling to her all the time. Time off and time with the family is precious IMO, good luck with the new night, but for me I'd hate to be away from the family that much personally. I suppose thats easy to say when DJ work is not my main source of income however, and appreciate that if it was my main job I'd probably have a very different attitud
  2. The 722 has a 2" HF long throw horn, where the 712 only has a one inch. It seems like a lot of money to pay though for that extra feature, they are almost 250 pounds per speaker extra!
  3. I got asked for a quote for 2014 about a week ago! It was for new years eve so the bride wanted to make sure she had her DJ early enough as any DJ worth his salt will be working NYE. Added about 40% to my usual wedding rate and am waiting for a reply.
  4. @ danallthemusicdisco I would probably rule out the Behringers for the reason Dan stated, when somebody who repairs audio equipment tells you something isn't good you should listen. I would also rule out the warriors purely for the weight issue, they are 30kg, so unless you have help they'd be tough to get up on the stands. That leaves the JBL's and the RCF's. and I think most people would go for the RCF's. I have the older model eons and they ere good, very reliable and have never given me a days trouble but they can be harsh if you push them, maybe the newer models are better I don
  5. Fair comment, wasn't trying to slate the hire business and looking back at what I wrote it does seem like I did. It's not very common over here and any hire systems I have seen have not been up to the standard that yours clearly are. Given it is a totally unregulated industry it is open season for cowboy operators with substandard equipment. You obviously hire out top notch kit, no offence intended.
  6. I can't see it catching on, I however would be happy to rent out my spare system and create a playlist that mixes properly by setting cue points etc, the problem then is timing the first dance etc, because nights never follow a defined timeline. I have a residency that tried this for a while and they weren't long giving up on it as they didn't know enough about music to do a decent playlist and they started to lose customers. I think Dan posted some links to some machines aimed at the pub trade that will DJ for the night, these will probably catch on more. Jon I'm really astounded at the
  7. Fair enough, I work 40 hours per week in another job as it happens, but thankfully I am able to rearrange my hours to come in a little later if I'm working day after a gig. Being p/time is no excuse for not doing a bit of marketing, I would guess most of the guys on here work other jobs too, I know Jason has a very demanding job but still maintains a website etc. You will get out of DJ'ing what you put into it (unless you are very lucky <___base_url___>/uploads/emoticons/default_sad.png ), I was lucky when I started working as a DJ as there weren't very many around where I grew up and w
  8. I was in a similar place a while back, I moved abroad for a while (2 yrs) and when I came back alot of new guys had started up, booking had fallen away and as you know, your fixed costs, music, gear etc stay the same. I did a bit of marketing and networking, built a website and canvassed a few of the local pubs & hotels with cards etc. I now have a busy residency that I am in two nights a week and mobile work is alot better, I am busier than ever but it took alot of work. Admittedly I spent alot of money improving my service, new sound & lighting equipment, and I have started doing VJi
  9. This is actually the reason why I stopped taking set playlists myself, one groom gave me two CD's that he had mixed and recorded himself as he said he was a DJ too, it was really terrible and despite pleas from myself and some of the guest he wouldn't relent and let me do my own thing. Ireally enjoy Dj work in general, but would just prefer to let somebody else do these ones, I suppose if I was a full time dj, depening on the fee my attitude might be different.
  10. I would definately announce over the mic that you are playing the brides selection etc and try to get her friend out on the floor. I have had that in the past and it is very annoying to lose the floor because of somebody telling you to play something you know in your heart and soul won't work. TBH I don't get it very often normally i just get a short "preferred songs" list in advance of the event which is fine. I stopped taking set playlists after a few bad experiences with them, but if a bride comes up to you on her night looking for XYZ you don't really have any option but to go with it and
  11. Use RCA cables to connect your media players into the line inputs on your mixer channels, then RCA or XLR output on your mixer into the xlr input on your KAM Amp (all these cables can be picked up in maplins if you don't already have them, but I'm sure they would have come with the kit), then speakon cables out of the back of your AMP into your speakers speakon input, simple, It looks to me like you will be short one input for your media players, your mixer has 5 inputs according to the Numark website, and you will need six if you want to connect everything, 2 for the Cortex, 2 for your CD pla
  12. I like the look of the sunfly ones, but this could be because my collection is mainly sunfly. And my karaoke res insist I display the graphics on a big screen projector, I then play promo only music vids in between singers, makes for a cracking show.
  13. I went digital about 18 months ago and went with VDJ pro, I do a mix of normal Djing, Video DJing and Video / Karaoke nights, and I also regularly use the slideshow plugin for photo display at birthday parties, so I really get the most from the program. I must say it is very easy to use, and works like a dream with my Denon DN-HC 4500 controller. I would have no hesitation recommending it, I know of a few DJs who bought PCDJ VJ and subsequently changed to VDJ as they didn't like PCDJ VJ after using it, not sure how they compare pricewise, but you can download trial versions of both and see whi
  14. DJ work requires an increasingly thick skin these days, people can be incredibly rude and make unreasonable demands at a moments notice, I once had a bride on the verge of tears because I didn't have a song that meant something special to herself and her son, this despite contacting her the previous week to ask her if there was anything specific she wanted played, the groom then got quite nasty about it as if it was somehow my fault that she had forgot to mention it. At another wedding I had a very difficult crowd, no genre whatsoever got the floor moving and I got a torrent of abuse from the
  15. mobiledjdownloads.com is legal for dj use, you have a choice of WAV or MP3 download, and the quality is very good.
  16. Started last night with Karaoke residency, busy one too... Friday.............. Youth Video Disco in local nightclub, thousands of pounds worth of Martin lighting to play with too yipee Saturday.......... 21st party, no playlist or anything out of the ordinary, video disco with photo display and maybe Karaoke Sunday R & R
  17. If you can stretch another 80 pounds per cab the RCF 312's are now available from a number of retailers for 400 pounds, far superior to the behringers I would imagine clicky 160 pounds over the lifetime of speakers is nothing IMO and you'e be getting real quality kit.
  18. Why do people (clients) use agencies when they know they will probably have no direct dealings with the DJ who will be playing at their function. Most clients I deal with at least want a chat over the phone about music etc, I can't figure why somebody would be happy to book an agency disco with no idea who will turn up to DJ. I know there are some agencies who operate a very professional service, but this clearly wasn't one of them. @OP we had a similar thread not long ago, I've had a few experiences like that as well, one in particular sticks in the mind where nobody danced hardly all ni
  19. Yes and side by side in a comparison the RCF's would win hands down over most speakers I am sure, but at a noisy function would clients really notice or care about sound quality or speaker brand? Like I said if you are driving your speakers to within an inch of their lives and the sound is horrendous I'm sure people would notice and possibly comment, but otherwise cheaper speakers should be perfectly fine for most functions. That said I would love a set of RCF's and hope to purchase some as soon as I clear some older stuff I have for sale, but I think this is as much for myself as it is for th
  20. Lol just what I was talking about above, I've used eons for a while and have never had a problem or a complaint about sound quality, and they are one of the biggest sellers around so surely they can't be that bad, although I agree they can sound harsh if you push them, nothing a decent sub wouldn't fix. At the end of the day 99.99% of clients won't notice what speakers you are using or comment on sound, unless the sound is truly awful. The OP asked about speakers under 1000 pounds, the RCF's and JBL's you're recommending would be more than that, the PRX 615 look awesome though, 135db peak and
  21. I went through a couple of years of using substandard equipment and basically not caring very much about Djing, showing up to gigs unprepared, no backup equipment etc etc. TBH I had a pretty tough dayjob with a super salary so I ddn't need to work as a DJ and probably saw it as a chore alot of the time. Funnily enough, as badly as I perceived I was doing the job I was really busy and was making alot of money from it with a fairly poor setup. I got made redundant and now have a different and less stressful (and lesser paid LOL) job and have regained my interest in a big way, probably due to the
  22. Thanks for the pictures Nic, the way you have the TV attached is very clever I will be looking to do something similar definately, what size is the TV 32" or so?
  23. I have also had some bad experiences with this supplier, one time I ordered some wireless mic's, good thing I wasn't in a hurry looking for them put it that way LOL. However if you email them first and confirm it's in stock they do send things out very quickly. I would never buy anything off them again unless I make contact first.
  24. I have owned both the Eon 15P and the Eon 15 G2's, and from my experience if you could get a hold of a pair of G2's second hand they would be a better buy, thunderous output and a better looking speaker than the original 15 P1's, but both get alot of bad press for some reason, with many people telling you they are crap, I was very happy with mine. My 15 P1's are in mint condition and I'd be happy to sell em if anybody is interested, I think Raymilkybarkid also has some for sale. BTW OP HTFR sent out their catalogue last week and the 325 deal was still on it so they should still be in stoc
  25. I have the CD Mix III and it let me down badly at a gig in the past when one of the CD drawers wouldn't open, meaning I had to run home and get my old system, I now use it solely as backup and wouldn't touch one again. I have heard of alot of these type of issues from other users also. If you have 250 pounds to spend and use mainly laptop then get yourself a Hercules RMX, this is a mixer, midi controller and soundcard all in one, and would be money much better spent than on the poorly put together Numark unit IMO. This however is also an all in one unit so you would need some sort of backup al
