A quiet night for me, spent with the family. Although I've got to say that the new Year fireworks in London were spectacular http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/thumbup.gif , shame the rest of the night on TV was Crap http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/221.gif .

As you may have read in many earlier posts, I set myself the target of getting £500 for this New Years Eve, and also the marketing spiel (gained mainly from the tips of others here) to convince landlords that it was a fair price, despite the competition locally charging an average of £200 - £300 for NYE, and some others a great deal less http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/scared.gif . Despite having a few earlier enquiries and a last minute phonecall on 29th Dec, nobody was willing to pay that sort of figure locally, even for NYE http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/533.gif.

To be honest for some reason I wasn't that bothered about working NYE this year....maybe i'm getting old, or perhaps that because it's no longer part of my full time occupation that i'm getting pickey or indifferent http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/533.gif

I also had a long standing invitation to Dan's Wedding Reception, which in the end I was persuaded to decline to fulfill more traditional family loyalties, but equally £500 would have tempted me to work locally, had it have meterialised http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/smile.gif .

I have also noticed an increase in the number of colleagues who also found themselves looking for last minute work. Some, like me, had chosen family loyalties over taking a booking, a few had been let down at the last minute by venue management or clients cancelling (if you have a contract USE IT - don't let em get away with it) and for some, the work simply did not materialise.

Looking back at 2003 and 2004 NYE posts, I think that NYE 2005, has got to be the year where the most DJ's have found themselves looking for work on NYE at the last minute, or who never got the call. Could we be seeing a trend where a lot of people are chosing private parties, or spending the Evening with friends and family rather than going down to the pub?.

For those who are working, I also noticed that a lot of those bookings are actually Weddings rather than NYE parties as such, in other words, no different than a usual Saturday Night!. How many of those who took a Wedding tonight, also had enquiries for NYE parties, or would you too have not been working?. Are we seeing a drop in the number of enquries?, is there a pattern?, is it regional?

If there is a trend moving away from spending NYE down the local, and so less demand for entertainment, then hopefully in our favour, there could also be a trend towards more couples choosing to get married over the Xmas and New Year period so hopefully by Xmas and New Year 2006 (if we haven't been privatised or killed by legislation) it could balance out http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/smile.gif .

http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/goodjob.gif they were certainly impressive even on TV - was anyone from here there to see them 'live'?

I wasn't working this new years eve, though I could of been. I destest New Years eve with a passion, mainly because you get the "once a yearers" out, who think they can speak to you like dirt and want to be treat like kings because they're spending £25 ahead on a meal.

As for the trend towards private parties, I do think this is something you will see increasing. A lot of people I spoke to were a) either staying in or b) having a party at home. New years eve isn't the celebration it was 5 or 10 years ago. My friend who has his own pub won't put entertainment on new years eve because he says it costs him too much money.

As for there being lots of people looking for work, one of the reasons for this is the market is saturated. I don't wish this to go off topic or sound like an old fogey, but when I started, I was taken on by an agency, the guy in charge took me out with him and I learned off him. Because equipment is so cheap now, any tom, dick or harry can buy a load of gear and set themsleves up as a DJ, they work for less cos it's only beer money for them and people also see DJ's as the lowest of the low.

and on that note happy new year!

Great night all round. Went right through the cheese board http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/tongue.gif

Everybody was in party mood and had plenty of requests, most of which were already on the hypothetical playlist anyway. Only had to play Amarillo twice.

We tested out a new economy bubble machine. Low maintainence, only needs filling with fluid and the odd addition of any alcohol available. No electricity required.

Happy New Year all!

My night was easy, Souled Out performed two sets at 50 minutes each, which meant I could relax and enjoy the band. They were really good!

I didn't partake of the meal ( Stilton & Brocolli soup, Duck, Sherry triffle) which was not my faves to say the least. Ticket price:£50 a head!!!

Grandmaster Swing saw us through the meal, then a couple of swing tracks in full to fill the dance floor. By 10 I had it full. Commercial cheese and party all night long. 308 / 310 happy people. Only one OLD guy and his wife complained it was too loud, but as he had no manners or tact when complaining I chose to ignore him.

All round pleasant evening, re-booked for next year already.

Great night at the local chinese restaurant. Mixed crowd as usual, kept most people happy, did the normal rounds of 60's, 70's, 80's etc. Some of the best received were Sandstorm, The Launch, Jump around, One Step Beyond, Lip up fatty. Worst recieved Rythm of the night and Mundian To Bach Ke.

Finished with a NYNY,the can can, then some slow ones ending with Angels. Raptous (spelt wrong I am sure) applause from the dancefloor for me when finished around 1.30.

All in all a great night as I had my family with me, my 2 kids were superb eldest (11) just sleeping over a couple of chairs, youngest (6) still full of beans.

Ended up celebrating NY 5 secs early as had a drunken chinese restaurant manager and drunk husband organising when the countdown started. My hubby said 15 secs, chinese manager heard it as 10 and off he went! Couldn't really stop the crowd in full countdown mode! Anyway, I don't think anyone probably noticed http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/rolleyes.gif

Yup agreat as I have already said in another topic.

But am pleased that everone else had a great night too.

On the subject from Chris There is some cheap gear out there and yes some people are trying to cash in on this trade but they are and will be caught out, Entertaining people is not an easy trade only if the entertainer is good then it looks easy but that is down to the entertainer, some people have but most dont that is why there is big hole in intertaining Chris mentiontion that about tv on New years eve) take ant and dec for example ( poor entertainers to me) In the entertaiment in general there is not the talent around now I will more than likly upset a few here and this is my view there is no one any where near the entertainment value of say the 2 ronnies etc the list is endless of past away stars that will never be replaced big shame I know but we need better talent to come through and its easier now than the past stars had it. Some think they have it but there soon found out, so to the good entertainer both young and old if you enjoy it stay in there dont get did illusioned(check spelling hehe) If the phone is ringing and contacts are made then its up to you on your price if the phone only ring occassional then you have to take what you can thats supply on demand I am affraid.

I just hope that the general public realise this as they control it where it is a Disco or stage show we are all in the same boat.

Age is NOT a problem, only health. If you are in good health at 76 and enjoying the music then keep going.

My grand father was out till 86 as MC.

Properly in the wrong area to rant on but just wanted to bring the point home that GOOD ENTERTAINERS and that is what you are will WIN

Nice 1 Marky! Was that bloke at the side of the stage looking for his crossfader? http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/tongue.gif

I drove up to Bury St Edmunds about 2pm, got there about 4pm, leisurely setup, got fed, was subjected to the horror of a piper for 1.5 hours, then did a classic cheese party from 10pm till 1am. Recorded the whole thing using my new Gemini ikey, worked well. Got back home after a hotel stay at lunchtime today.

Not working, so I took the family out to a pub near where I used to live, where they were supposed to have 'entertainment' laid on.

I was hoping for a disco of sorts, but it turned out to be karaoke, but the guy had another booking so set up some gear to let us get on with it ourselves. There's professionalism for you..... Trouble was, he took an essential item with him in error, not sure what exactly what, but the karaoke equipment couldn't be used.

Every cloud does have a silver lining then!! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif WooHoo!!

Next year, I've promised myself, I'll be conducting the party instead of just attending someone else's. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/wacko.gif

Only a quiet one for me too, started at 7pm with Pink Floyd, they were the warm up band for Robbie Willaims, who could only do an hour set because my wife had invited him back for supper, so U2 had to finish off till 12.30, they stopped at midnight so I could play my 5 minute set, then all of us had burgers on the A38, and only 177,500 turned up.

Hoping for something a little better next year.
