djwesty 0 Posted January 6, 2006 Report Share Posted January 6, 2006 right im 15,broke the bank to get my equipment,done a few gigs got some work from them,put up posters around my local area got a little bit of work from them,i know yellow pages should be another step but the expence is it worth it,can anyone give me any other ideas, i even done a free one for a school to raise money for charity,do you think doing that for a few social clubs could get me some more work,please let me know how you first started getting your work or if any new djs have any other ideas thanks jamie Link to post Share on other sites

There is also a gig Request and Offers section on the forum, check it daily and you may find gigs local to you being offered or passed on from time to time http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/smile.gif Have some cards printed, a good source of these is Vistaprint, and you can find their link in the links section of the forum, which is in my signature below this post. Business cards are a must, and vistaprint offer free cards with their logo on the back for just the postage charge - honest, no catches http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/smile.gif It takes time, and some work on your part to get established, but keep at it, and trust me, you'll start getting bookings but it'll take a little time don't expect it to happen overnight. Have a read of the forum, do a search for 'Advertising' and using the forum's search facility, there are lots of pieces of advice on promotion from over the past few years. Andy Westcott 0 Posted January 6, 2006 Report Share Posted January 6, 2006 In my experience, word of mouth and enquiries resulting from your gigs are the best way for you to go for now. Yellow Pages can be very expensive, and may not generate much work as there is a lot of competition. I'd suggest that as you aren't known down this way, you try to up your profile a bit in your immediate area. You can perhaps do this by approaching a local youth club and offering very cheap rates for a few gigs (50 quid?) to help them raise money, as you may possibly get further birthdays and suchlike from these. As pointed out, get some business cards printed for when you do get enquiries - nothing elaborate, just an easy to read card with your name and number, and a design which makes it obvious at a glance what you do. The word 'Disco' can be helpful here! Don't necessarily expect work immediately, as someone may have a card kicking about for a year before it's looked at. Certain shops like cafes and barbers might let you put up cards on a noticeboard for free - it all helps. Concentrate on getting your name known. If you make an impression, you work will snowball. The better your show, the faster it'll happen, but take these early years as an important chance to get that experience in rather than to make your fortune. If you want to be a bit more extravagant you can get a box and are able to pay via monthly direct debit, its only about £120 per year , £10 per month. Also try to find a local disco agency. absvicandmark 0 Posted February 12, 2006 Report Share Posted February 12, 2006 (edited) Just a quick question based on this subject....please dont take this the wrong way under 16`s BUT If these new guys are under 16, isnt it illegal to work in an over 18`s pub/club etc? Not got one booking, not even an enquiry YET! However, I did a FREE disco for my daughters guide troup (help with fundraising) and got 4 bookings from that. I have a poster in the shop where I work, and only got 1 or 2 enquiries from that. I have a FREE single lineage in the yellow pages, but no confirmed bookings from there. Word of mouth is by far the best way, much cheaper too. My daughter and her best mate ( my roadies daughter) are the best PA's you could wish for too. Business cards from Vistaprint are pretty good for the money too. The rest of the guys seem to get a fair bit of work from their websites, so I'm looking into that next.
