I received a message from another member suggesting that Jeff be a good candidate for interview. Jeff agreed to take part and you can read all about him below. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/smile.gif

1. What is your DJU Forum Alias?

Jeff Wall

2. What is your Real Name, Age, Location & Marital Status?

Jeff Wall, im nearly 38 but look 21 (er think not) Live in Southport North west England....(between Blackpool and Liverpool for those who failed geography at school! Marital status mmmmmm got half hour!! Married for 8 years then divorced http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif with 2 kids that live with me (long story) but got married again to Helen who had a daughter, so its complicated, 2 kids and 1 step kid!

3. What is the name of your disco?

I dont have a name for my disco as i only do it part time along with my full time job...self employed electrician

4. How long have you been a DJ?

Ive dabbled in it for years, you know doing partys for family and stuff, always loved the thought of being a "proper DJ" but life just took over and never got the chance, but 2 years ago decided to do it proper part time!

5. What inspired you to become a DJ

As above really no particular inspiration, but always loved music and love a good quality sound. Looked at other DJ's and thought yes i can do that! So i did!

6. Are you a member of a DJ Association / Union?

No i dont bother with the work that i do, im small time with about 2/3 gigs a month, so dont feel the need at the moment. But have all respect to those who are members and the benefits it brings to them.

7. What is your favourite type of function now? (eg: Wedding, 18th Birthday party, etc)

I like all types of functions providing there is a good atmosphere and everyone dancing enjoying themselves, makes you feel good and your the one thats achieved it! Weddings ive done all have been good to be honest, some 40ths etc are also good. Tend to prefer the "older party" like 30ths - 50ths. Having said that, done few clubby gigs and loved it too!

8. What’s the worst/most embarrassing thing you've done in front of an audience?

Two things that stands out in my mind, Doing a club in Bolton last year...8 till 2am Fantastic night loved it (400 people i reckon) but had no mic all night, because the equipment wouldnt take/work my mic (even tho it was a standard shure sm58??) mixer was that old i blamed that! Was embarrasing not to be able to announce requests etc so just played continous music all night, but worked a treat!

Num 2 would be not long ago at Steve Mitchell's mother in laws 60th party

First words out my mouth was....welcome everybody to St Patrick's birthday party (St Patrick's was the venue not the birthday girl!) Ste never noticed he was well oiled

9. If you could go back to the beginning of your DJ career is there anything that you'd do differently? (eg: The gear that you bought, the way you promoted/advertised yourself)

Never advertised so cant really change anything there, but i should of looked around a bit more for my gear rather than buy the first thing i thought was decent (but wasn't in the end)

10. What do you feel you offer the public that convinces them to book you rather than "the next guy/girl"?

I believe your personality before, during and after the gig is very important, its good to communicate and hold conversations with the customer, have a laugh and a chat about what they want etc. I always do my best with the request list, but wont play rubbish that i know people will sit down to (unless reasonably good excuse to play it? )

Also the sound and music quality is important too, good sound doesnt stir anybody but bad sound does! Similar to chat on the mic....not too much talking doesnt bother anyone as long as you do some!, But too much talking stands out a mile!

11. Have you ever bought something for your show that you wish you hadn't? and why?

Yeah paid 700 quid for a 600watt DAP audio system the one that looks like the HK system....two 150watt satalites and a 300w sub, waste of money sold it on ebay 9 months later for 300 quid! To be fair was a good sound but not powerfull enough!

12. What's your next DJ purchase likely to be?

Looking at a Shure sm58 radio mic at the mo!

13. If you could get someone to invent a new piece of disco equipment for your show, what would it be?

mmmm not sure, if could think of a sensible one id be rich!! oh yeah, a microphoone that you can record announcements before the gig like ""welcome everybody to Barbra's 60th Birthday party here at St Patricks social club! would of pre done it at home and just pressed a magic button on the mic! save the **** up embarrassment mentioned above!

14. What was the worst equipment failure suffered during a gig?

Birthday girl making a moving speech to her mum and dad, but pulled the cable out of the mic connector as she tugged on the mic! loss of mic for a few mins till i got a spare out (150 people waiting!)

15. What do you think is the best thing about DJ'ing?

Like mentioned above the "buzz" when you get it right and make a great evening for all who was there, feels good! So job satisfaction which you dont get much of doing electrics for people

16. What do you think is the worst thing about DJ'ing?

Worrying about equipment failure or mistakes you may make....but ive learned that its ok to make mistakes and its ok to be human!

17. What would make you stop DJ'ing (if anything)?

Few reasons potentially, but hope they dont occur! Wife getting sick of me doing it, as i do longish hours anyway on the electrics, so dont need the extra income as much as i make out to her!

Or if the electrical business takes off more, i would prob have to slow the djing down, but at the moment its a fair balance i think, and have no wish to get bigger on electrics anyway as a sole trader

18. How do you think DJ'ing will change, in the next 5 years?

MP3's will take over defo as there doing now i reckon and the DJ licience thing will change things if they get it fair and right and police it right?

19. Most stupid thing anyone's ever said to you at a gig?

The usual "oh i used to be a DJ, what gear are you using blah blah.. You mind if i do a few tracks?? Errrrrrr Get lost!

20. Best advice you were ever given by a fellow DJ?

The only DJ i know personally is Steve mitchell who's given me lots of little bits of advice on gear, venues and music, so thanks to Steve. Also this forum has given me loads of ideas and advice just from reading the topics etc.

21. And worst advice you were ever given?

"Buy these dap audio speakers mate there awesome" mmmmm depends what your comparing them against? Not had too much bad advice so far!

22. How do you keep up to date with music? (eg Promo monthly CDs, Downloads, Purchase from retailer)

I just buy what i need from the shops, but have a load of cd's anyway going back years, download some from itunes

23. Name 3 songs that 95% of the time will fill the dance floor for you!

Saturday night at the movies

Brown eyed girl

Round ere they love country roads Hermes house band version

24. Mode of transportation.

Use the works van, citreon belingo sorry cant spell citreon! Jeff Wall Electrical Services written all over it, should add....and DJ on the back!

25. What is the furthest that you've travelled from home for a single gig?

So far, just Bolton, most gigs are within 25 miles of here

26. Approximately how many gigs have you done to date?

Done about average of 3 a month for 2 years whatever that works out........70 odd?

27. What is the largest/smallest audience numbers you've played to?

40 smallest, 400/500 biggest (but that was a Bolton club) private 260 people wedding in marquee last summer

28. What is your main (most successful) form of advertising your disco?

Word and mouth, dont advertise at all, and gigs passed to me from other DJ's that cant do it

29. Have you ever had someone try to claim off you? (eg: Public Liability Insurance or other such legal action)

Never, not in electrical or in DJ work

30. Add any additional comments which you would like to include here...

Errrr just thnks for asking me to take part in this quetionaire, it may be bit boring as im a "2 year job" opposed to the more fuller time and longer at it fellow DJ's!

Cheers all
