Hi all. I've been at this disco malarky for a couple of years now and it's time to ditch the cheap and cheerful start up gear and upgrade.....

I've upgraded my cd players and lights as and when I've found things in sales etc. Having just bought an Imac G5 computer to assist with most things musical, I have realised that the sound quality from the Mac is being lost when projected by the speakers.

Although these have served me well, it's time they made way for something else. I'm currently using (don't chuckle!!) Skytec 12" tops and 15" bass bins. The tops can sound harsh when driven hard, and the subs don't seem to throw much bass, even in a venue with a wooden floor. I've played with Eq's etc but to no avail. I done a gig last week and the landlord allowed me to test my decks and Mac through his installed JBL system and the sound was amazing!! Nice and tight and very punchy in the bass dept!!

I would like to upgrade to a sound system that is a little more compact / lighter as I have just got my Ifor williams trailer and I need to watch the weight! I could have bought a van for what that cost!! And no, I couldn't have a van! 3 kids and the missus wouldn't fit.

Anyways, should I go back to just the 2 speakers (maybe Peavey?) or do I go for one of these sub/satellite systems?? Obviously having just spent a couple of thousand on the Imac and trailer, funds are a little tight.

Any suggestions??

I've seen these strange Gemini XTR systems and lucas setups, but alas, could not stretch anywhere near the price of HK gear. I can't find any reviews for the Gemini system?

Cheers

how about a pair of active tops like the mackie srm or FBT Maxx and a Single Active bass bin to go with them at larger gigs....

will sound great and wont overload your car..

JBL JRX are average... if you fancy dual 15" look at the Mpro 225's much better sound...

me and Marky seem to be always plugging FBT Maxx speakers

i use the FBTmaxx4 actives. 400w rms a side and only 16kg each

but youll have to save quite a few pennies, but worth it in the long run.

http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/wacko.gif Gulp!!

The dilema I have is....

Can I justify that sort of money!

I only do the disco thing as a hobby rather than a serious business. I only average one a month, due to work commitments, so justifying thousands if difficult.

I would like a nice 'rounded' sound, unlike my poor overstretched Skytec waste bins!

As I said, I have no complaints about the set up, but a nicer sound quality would be nice, just to finish things off, especially as I have three weddings coming up shortly!! (Some hobby eh?)

Any other suggestions??

I know, it's the same dilemma for a lot of DJ's. Before making any expensive purchase, I sit down and work out how long it will take to pay back whatever i'm intending to buy, and whether the purchase can (i) be justified and (ii) how long it will take to pay for itself.

There are a lot of nice speakers about, but for some of us, its a case of whether the expense can be justified.

Out of interest what is your budget?, if we know that, at least we'll know what to recommend.

Do it in stages then get the tops and add bins at a later date when funds allow...

Having the best sound system you can afford is the way forward, It will if looked after last you a lifetime and never need replacing...

If you ask arround you will find DJs with quality branded systems who have been using them on the road week after week in some cases well over 10 years and they still sound as good as when they were new...

Ill start a poll and see shall I http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif

I'd be looking at around £500. I like the look of the peavy speakers though.

Speakers would be my last update for a while though.

The Skytecs have served me well but the mids/tops are sounding quite harsh and almost toneless. The bass cabs are erm......present shall we say but they don't give a 'warm' feel

I think us boys who try to do it full time are in the same catagory as business is quiet up North.
