We arrived at the hotel at 6.30 to be told that the lift had just broken and the engineer wouldn't be there for another 2 hours. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/014.gif

Nothing else for it, we had to lug the gear up 2 flights of stairs and I was ready to start with 1 minute to spare at 8 o'clock. By this time my shirt was stuck to my back.

That'll teach me to moan http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/sad.gif or should that be http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/363.gif

It was worth it though, my best wedding of this season so far. The dance floor was never empty for the whole 5 hours (no buffet break), they were even dancing to the karaoke singers. Luckily the whole floor was wooden so when the dance floor was full they could dance anywhere else in the room, and they did. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

At the end of the night I told them I'd give them a list of my bookings for the rest of season so they could come along and show other people how to enjoy themselves at a wedding.

More of the same please, only on the ground floor http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/thumbup.gif

PS By the time we'd packed the gear away the lift was working so obviously my earlier thumps to the control panel caused no permanent damage http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/laugh.gif

PPS My body today feels like that Johnny Kidd & the Pirates song 'Aching all over'

Saturday Night,

Fortnightly gig at the local club...I could get used to turning up with only CD's and not having to lug gear up stairs and past drunken punters etc http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/thumbup.gif .

A good crowd, but audience slightly down due to holidays etc. However still played to a full dance floor and an enjoyable night was had by all!.

Saturday night for me at local cricket club in a room not much bigger than our front room, was a Nurses leaving party (almost as good as belly dancers) !! one of which was my missus so I had to behave myself.

Only about 25 to 30 of them but it was an absolute cracker of a night they danced to almost anything I played especially the cheesey. was on my own as Adam could'nt make it ( just as well he's only 16 all those Nurses at once might have scarred him for life !!!) http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/thumbup.gif

Brilliant weekend - makes you realise what it is about the job that we all love - Two weddings - Friday made a slight **** up by announcing the bride and groom with the wrong surname! Never done that before but will send myself a note telling myself to check in future! Played tons of rock and roll - they were mad for it! Saturday wedding at the same venue which over-ran so I didnt get started til 830 - but had a nice chat with ADS (Andy) whilst sitting in the bar - I was sitting in the bar - he was on the phone! I loved both jobs and everyone was up for it - I could have played bob the builder and they would have danced!

WE LOVE KAREN, AND IT'S GREAT TO HAVE HER BACK !!!! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Looks to me like everyone had a good weekend http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Why can't life be like this all the time? But I suppose if it wasn't for the clouds we wouldn't enjoy the sun. Here's to next week then. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/pepsi.gif

To continue from earlier posts, now 2 weeks into my residency at a local Bar, (as I have said before the local nightclub closes its doors at 10:30pm, so most people leave the bar before then) however this week at 11:00pm there were 140 people still in the bar, before I started at this time the norm was for there to be 20 people.

The bar owner is over the moon.

Sunday Sharon sang in Nth Woolwich, & quick pack down to be in Brentwood for 10pm for a lovely soul gig

I went into Saturdays wedding soaking wet and "blind".

Had move the gear into the hotel across an open courtyard, amidst heavy rain and lightning. I was wetter than an otter in a washing machine. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/014.gif

OK, that explains "wet", what about "blind"?. Well, like many DJ's, for weddings, I get the hotel (as this hotel arrange "everything" for the Bride and Grooms) to send them one of my music sheets. Despite me checking 3 weeks ago, ten days ago, and even last Thursday morning...No music sheet had been received by the hotel, even thought the hotel had politely enquired about the return of the sheet, during several of the conversations between themselves and the happy couple-to-be. "we'll put some ideas down soon" was the main reply - which is understandable...chaotic time, getting married...I'd be wrong in expecting them to think that the Disco was the important bit (No sarcasm there, I really mean it...I remember almost going nuts during the preaparations for my own wedding)

Optimistically, I hoped (HA! Fool!) that the bride and groom would either bring their first dance with them on CD, or would choose "that one from Notting Hill", or "that female one that was at number one for 16 weeks"... or "lady in red" or something.....

Anyway..I set up (dripping) having swiped one of the bath towel from my room, to try and dry off a bit, and change into the bow tie and Dinner jacket...(hey, arent those shiny lapels ideal for CD cleaning... http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif ) and with background music playing, go off to do my mini-interview with the newly-weds...

"Have you had any idea's yet for your first record?" Says I.

"Yes, we've decided that we'd like ...N*Sync's: This I promise you... it wasnt released as a single, but was on their 2nd album...you've probably got all their's..." says bride.

"Hmmm? I've got a good few N*Sync songs, but only their singles, and some of their tunes on compilation albums...have you got a 2nd choice?" says I.

"Yes, we've got a CD in our room, which track 3 would be ok".

"Ok then, if you can get the Best Man to fetch that reserve CD from your room, and in the meantime, I'll search my N*sync tunes"...says I.

I also mention politely that I would have been sure to bring with me, any tracks that were mentioned on the music sheets which are returned to the hotel. The bride and groom both advise that they did return one. My next enquiry to them was what other tunes, or "types" of music had they asked for on the music sheet? Blank looks...

Anyway...10 minutes later, Bride and Groom decide that they dont want the reserve track anyway, and send someone home to get their N*Sync album.

Its worth noting, that whilst some poor soggy bloke (me) was setting up in the empty function room earlier, the Best man came in, talking to a woman. She asked him what the Bride and Grooms first record was going to be, and the best man replied "They've not decided yet"... HHHmmmmmmm http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/dry.gif

Anyway...the night went well throughout... The kids games went well...Musical statues was AGAIN won by a little girl (I really MUST buy some more prizes for little boys... http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/huh.gif ). The request slips and texts came in thick'n'fast, and the finish time rushed up to us all too quickly.

No, I was just wearing my ordinary shirts. The ones that dont set off Noise Limiters in village halls. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I dried off all my "setting up" clothes, by clever use of the trouser press.

Weekend Started on Thursday 24th - Dartford, Kent. (Englan U19's Rugby Player).

Went very well - too many stairs on this gig ..... helps with the diet though!!!

Friday - Disco, Erith, Kent.

Weird night. Turn up as per usual for last 12 years - then asked to take-it-easy as the venue wanted to 'try out' a new vocalist on night.

Fine I says.......no probs.

Later, the singer turns up with a Mini Disc and Shure Microphone - that's it.

Oh Dan, can the guy use your gear?

Fine I says.......no probs, again.

The singing starts after I give him an introduction. First 20 minutes, he was quite good, but it dragged on.

45 minutes later - he finishes.

Apart from the religious BINGO (it's a CIU club) Disco cranks up again about 10.30pm, I finishes at 11.30pm.

Waiting for the 'kite' - and the Secretary, who I've know for 12+ years says "Here you are Dan, here's half as you only did half the night......."

WHAT DO YOU THINK HAPPENED NEXT?

Saturday night, Absolutely Fabulous!!

Vickers & Tart's Night at SAME VENUE as night before!!!!

Once gone through the photo's taken - will post on my website (and I'll let the Admin know first!)

Sunday - checked out some brilliant DJ's carving it up on the wheels of steel. Very impressed with the mixing - sadly, they were not on the 'old internet'. Couldn't get them interested on the forum. Still, left the URL for them.

Well Dan at short notice I can think of 4 possibilities

1. You just left him - lying there.

2. You asked for half of the singers fee to cover hire of PA system.

3. You told him that you had actually doubled your prices so half of the new rate would be fine.

4. Something else http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/533.gif

I'll just sit back and listen for the cough

what happened next? Me thinks I would be telling him he had to pay for my time in attendance - after all you couldnt go and do another gig that night could you! Bloomin cheek of the man - have you let him know how extortionate your prices are for sub-letting your equipment for would be singers!

Friday - Disco, Erith, Kent.

Dan,

My wife works at this venue 2-3 times a year, was the secretary p http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/censored.gif d, he normally is when we're there.

I like the way they introduce the bingo & the tote, by shouting over the top of the performance whilst my wife is singing.

I did a pretty normal 21st on sat - loads of cheese - piece of proverbial really.

Saw the scratch pervertz at a local pub/bar on sunday which was a bit of an unexpected bonus - i only popped in for a lager!

Then had a very angry call with one of my agents this morning - basicaly 3 of the saturday nights he gave me in august hes now given to someone else because " he couldnt get hold of me" - he knew i was going on holiday and he knew i could do the gigs - i told him to send the contracts and id sign them when i got back, to which he agreed - i cant believe it - thats £600 lost and too late to get anymore (i had already turned down a gig for one of hte saturdays) - how can i expect to save enough for uni when hes screwing me over like that?? If anyone gets any enquiries around surrey/south west london for august 12th, 19th or 26th and there busy i would very much appreciate you passing on my number/subcontracting hte gig to me http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/smile.gif

Did you receive the contracts? If so this proves that he did actually offer you the work and whether you signed and returned the contract or not, you have a verbal agreement with this agent which is equally as binding in law as any written contract. Why should you loose out because this agent obviously is not very good! Tell him you want compensation as you have turned down work in order to fulfill your obligations to him! If I get anything in I will let you have it matey!

Thanks very much. He never actually sent them - i was expecting them to be on my doorstep upon my return from holiday but they wernt there! ill be speaking to him again tomorrow to ask for the cancellation fee for under 1 months notice as stated in his terms and conditions (what applies to his customer should also apply to him) and see where that goes - usually hes a very good agent and has never let me down before - hopefully this will be the first and last time or he'll have lost one of his finest (so his customers keep telling me) http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/tongue.gif

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT:

The secretary was actually 'sober' (but later he was off the rails, as per usual yes).

Anyway - he says "here's half for your work - as you only did half the night."

I produce my invoice and add double to my usual money, and give it to him.

"what's the bl http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/censored.gif y hell's this then?!", he says.

"Equipment hire from my company to YOUR supplied singer."

"But we didn't supply him. He came down to have a go and show us his act. You should invoice him!", he laughs.

And I replied "No, you, the venue if you like, asked ME if he could perform. I said no problem. If he had blown my speakers - I would be adding naughts to the fee. The singer had no speaker system. He would not have been able to perform without me and he was using My gear in My time. By the way, I want cash."

He walks off. 3 minutes later, he comes back with the normal money, in cash, in an envelope and a smile, saying "It was only a joke!"

Somehow, I don't think so. But I learnt that the Entertainment Secretary had put him right!

I can take a joke and enjoy a laugh - but sometimes I really want to take peoples heads off with a blunt spoon. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/dry.gif
