I charge by the hour. Only charge for travel to and from if the job is quite a distance and need more money to cover Deisel Costs.

My quote is the price I want for the entrie gig including on the road time other costs etc...

I also work milage costs out at arround 60p per mile

but the price I give the customer includes every thing...

chat to them about what they want and expect and then give the right price for the job in the first place no hidden extras.

But more importantly dont sell your self short... if you think your worth £xxx then tell them thats what it will cost to do it right.

I just tell 'em that half the fee is for setting the gear up........ the other half of the fee is for packing the gear away, and that the musical bit in the middle (up to 6 hours) is free.

I love the bit in the middle. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif

Just the price that I want for that particular gig. Travelling time, set up & dismantling is all taken into account when I give the quote.

'Other'.

Reason being, I look at the whole job, from dragging the gear down the stairs, loading it up, travelling, unloading, setting up, the performance, taking down, loading up, travelling, unloading, dragging the gear back up the stairs and the de-brief over a cup of coffee.

The level of help varies, the distance varies, as does the amount of gear I'd take along, so I quote based on how I view the total workload, but based loosly around a pricing formula.

I quote for the "package" and I always do things for "free". Here are some things things that I don't necessarily tell tyhe client about when they hire djspacebar

- arrive early, although the show pays from 7pm till midnight. I actually am there from 5 till around 2.

- confetti - throw in some air guitars, glowsticks, baloons and confetti

- clean up confetti - yes, with all the mess I end up making - I offer to clear it all up - What a mess! - I might be working at the venue again so I want to keep good relations

- unlimited time with the client. On average I have worked out that per gig before the venue, if I add up the time pitching, speaking, working with the client it works about to be about 10 hours over a 6 month period. That includes the time on their job and doing things for them

- travel included

- free graphics design for the client i.e in the past with clients weddings I like to ask them about their themes for their wedding breakfast tables. I ended up creating the placements for them e.g Chelsea FC, Underground and Del boy.

- Mirror ball, if I can I like to get one in the venue

- a wedding gift from the DJ, not a cheap tacky thing and related to the client

- free cd (if I end up taking pictures of the evening, I give it all back to the client the next day)

- webspace. The last 3 gigs that I did, the pictures are on the website, they equate to 80mb!! each for just their pictures only.

If we didn't "enjoy" what we're doing, we wouldn't be doing it. I'm sure many of you feel the same way.

My quote takes into account all the factors, but ultimatley depends on the time.. as people expect to, and are happy to pay more for longer.

For evening gigs I charge for a certain time up to 5 hours and then per hour after that. If its shorter than 5 hours, i don't come down on price, as i could be doing a longer night somewhere else for more, and as it happens most gigs are 7 till 12 anyway.

I don't usually add milage unless its further than say 60-70 miles, as I happily cover a large area and the closer to home gigs make up for the further away gigs.. so it all balances out really.

I have one price based on my market (scandinavia) it goes up if the length of time is over a certain amount. It does not go down but i do in fact quote a price £100 over the amount and then tell them i am knocking off 100 !

When does your disco quote start from ?

from the minute i put down the phone after taking a booking. beyond that point you are working in some capacity for the client even printing out the booking form and putting it in an envelope and walking to the post box carry elements of service charges. if you are serious about costing your business then don't overlook the larger picture and include the cost of serving the client in some capacity in relation to their booking because if it involves your time, then your time = money. when the plumber gets in his van and drives to the local trade counter to order a part, you can bet he is including this time in his bill to you and your attitude should be the same. There is so much more to costing business in this industry than the obvious bit involving music and pretty lights.

Other

My base price for a disco between 7pm and midnight

+

Entertainment time before 7pm per hour

+

Entertainment time after midnight per hour

+

Distance (if out of town)

+

Roadie (if required)

+

Karaoke (if required)

I don't charge for setting up, breaking down, travelling time, pre-event visit/s, arriving 1 hour earlier than necessary, special music purchases etc, etc. These are to me just included services that hopefully mean I give the customer a professional service. (In their eyes).

We charge a all in but there are times when things change so we change the price to suit that. ie move the party 10 miles down the road

Someone must have voted & brought this topic back to the fore so I thought I'd add my bit ....Other

Tonight I left home at 6.30 to travel to a pre-event meeting with a B&G, then on to a pre-booking meeting with another B&G. Arriving back home at 9.50pm.

These meetings help me to provide a better level of service but they also have to be costed into the quote so I'm in agreement with McCardle.

When someone books me for a 5 hour disco they will actually have at least 12 and up to 25 hours of my time dedicated just to them; covering the planning, preparation, travel & actual event. Add on business expenses and a true figure begins to emerge - this is when reality hits home.
