Dj's United

Weekend June 1st To 4th 2006

Recommended Posts

Got a phone call from a local hotel last night at 7o'clock. They asked if I could do a disco for them. I said 'when', they replied 'Now!'

They had a wedding reception and the meal was being eaten and the DJ that had been booked had failed to turn up.

I said I'd do it but wouldn't be there for 1hour. They said they didn't mind and asked how much. I told them I'd charge them what I'd normally charge for a Friday night and they were more than happy.

Arrived at the wedding to see a very relieved Bride and Groom who told me that the Disco in question had taken a deposit from them and had provided them with contracts. They got in touch this week to see if all was OK and were told no problem.

As you can imagine they are not very happy with the other disco. However they were over the moon that I'd stepped into the breach, especially as we had friends round at the time and I'd planned on going out with them.

Did the disco they were very happy, especially as they had expected me to charge them a high fee to get them out of trouble. Very happy that they thought I'd played fair with them and so were the hotel who then said that they would put we at the top of their list of people to help them out. They thought it was good that I'd not tried to sting the client.

My opinion is this. The other disco in question acted awfully and could have ruined a couple's special day. Had they had a last minute problem they should have arranged for cover of some sort. I was more than happy to get my normal money as I wasn't working that evening so now I'm that much better off, and a lot of people know I'll treat them fairly and are happy to recommend me.

Why did they call me? I'd been in touch with them and had given them a demo disc of the styles of music I play. Had the entertainment's manager listened to it? No....but it was laying on her desk so she thought what the hell give em a call.

As I'm still new to this malarchy I've been reading peoples advice on here and someone mentioned doing a demo disc. So thanks guys!

It pays to use the wisdom of people on this website. I would never have thought to do the demo discs.

The only credit I can take from the situation was acting on some of the advice given

Mega cheese crowd and they loved it!

So you probably could've got away with it then.

No excuse http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif

Nah, not really Steve. It wouldn't have fit in with anything else that I played. I would have played it if I had something either side that would have gone with it. Maybe Tiger Feet or something??

Thought about it on Saturday too, but never really went in that direction. I was playing a load of 80/90s dance. Sweet would have sort of stood out like the proverbial..... http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/scared.gif

I know I said in the other thread that I still got a buzz out of a good gig after all this time, but after this one I was hyper! So many that wouldn't usually get played, but did & got a great result. Big round of applause at the end & profuse thanks from B&G & parents

You know it's all worth while after a gig like this. I wish they could all be this eclectic. Only problem was I didn't get to sleep til 4 & had to be up by 7

So do I win a prize for getting a full house with BRB?

Wow Steve, never heard of some of these tunes. Did you already have them for the B&G or did they request them early enough for you to purchase them. Just checkin some of them out on itunes.

Pictures from last nights Football presentation evening. Was an under 18's presentation night, with about 100 prize winners, around 20 of them over 12! Add to that another 200ish guests we had a very big, very full sports hall!

Anyway, set up the big show and sit there for 2 hours whilst the presentations get done. I decided to stop the boredom i would play a tune whilst each prize winner walked up to the stage to collect their award. Things such as "We are the champions", "The Best", "Boys are back in town", "The One And Only", and a loada footie related stuff.

Finished the presentations at about 9:15 and i kicked off on the disco, after the first song (Tony Christie "Is this the way to win the world cup") i realised this was gona be a kids disco. So played to about 150 kids, horrible tunes, including the cray frog, for 45 minutes when i was asked to announce the raffle. That took 15 minutes, and then everyone went home! Couldn't believe it! From a room with 300 people, to a room with about 25! Fantastic, we finished playing at 10:20 and packed up! we were on the road by 11:45, which isn't bad considering it wasn't the easiest or shortest carry in, i wasted 10 minutes taking photos and playing a couple of tunes for the girls cleaning up!

Anywho, the photos:

Had a special at usual venue as we were requested for 65th birthday of a regular.

All in a very good mood and, despite the fact it was really hot in there, danced from start to finish. Lots of requests, from 60's to chart, reggae to irish. Cheese of all descriptions.

Had a group of nurses from the hospice in, who requested "The Stripper" and entered into the spirit (only as a joke, quite safe for younger members). naturally caught it on video. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/whistling.gif

The Stripper

Interesting floor-fillers for the night was Woolly Bully and Westmeath Batchelor (Joe Dolan), everybody up and singing along to both. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/laugh.gif

Landlady says we are getting worse and the punters getting madder .................. and see you in 2 weeks. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif

Apart from the Johnny Cash track, I had all of them allready. It was a realy good night & I don't think I played one track I could say I didn't like.

http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/notworthy.gif Praise and respect to you. Just out of interest, and I think we know the answer already - but would you have swapped the earnest and sincere thanks of the bride & groom and the venue for say a tripled fee?

The way I see it, having bailed out a bride & groom in a similar situation recently, one option is "money for nothing, in the bank right now", wheras the other outcome is regular gig money again and again and again.

My weekend was interesting, both Friday and Saturdays weddings (same venue) were both full of people who had forgotton that whilst drinking copious amounts of refreshments all day is a good antidote to hot sunny weather, if each of those drinks is an alcoholic one - you end up blotto'd before the speeches. The courtyard garden looked like a the opening scenes to "Lost", lethargic bodies adorning every horizontal surface. The sozzled were sizzled.

Had a rough time getting them all in from the garden - even for the first dance - the guests just couldnt be bothered to come in, dispite the function room pocessing enough air-conditioning to create icicles on the guests noses on its lower settings. Understandably the bride wanted everyone in to see the first dance - overall the 8pm first dance, didn't get going until 8:45 - what eith those that drifted in early/on-time for the first dance then thought "Oh its not happening yet" so drifted back outside. Me thinks that I might need to find a way of DMX controlling a large barrel of vampire midges ready for the next time I'm back at that venue - more realistically...find the switch that kills the garden lights. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/whistling.gif

Journey back Sunday morning would have been nicer if not for the tiny tiny minority of two-wheeled nutters RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrring past in "wing mirror clipping mode" - the scurge of the summer - wake me up, when September ends.

I bet they were all riding "plastic fanatstics" & were wearing matching leathers, that sort only get out on Sundays & do their best to kill them selves / eachother / other road users. Real bikers don't like 'em either.

Normal saturday night for me at my ususal place. They were dancing before I had started proper so thought they might have been a mad crowd, but they weren't that mad. Decided had to play safe with music choices or the floor would have cleared after a couple of normally good songs didn't go down well. Had a stripper in for one of the hen nights. £65 he gets for about 5 mins of work, he isn't even that good looking or muscley - easy money. Mixer kept playing up again! I have told manager so hopefully will be able to hear songs to cue up next time. Someone from my day job turned up with one of the hen nights, was a bit of a shock. Gave out free lollypops when I did the clubby bit, went down well.

She is one of a group of nurses from the hospice and you know what their day to day work entails. Naturally they like to party to counter the stress of nursing (and losing) terminally ill patients. It's the only way to cope with it.

They all do a brilliant job at the hospice. I don't think many of us could do it. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/nono.gif

Chill out! It was a joke http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/huh.gif I don't doubt that they do a good job, and i bet they like to let their hair down every once in a while. Did a joint 16th and 18th B'Day party for a couple of lovely young girls. Only a small place felt quite scary http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/scared.gif at first as the family and friends seemed to be a bit on the 'rough round the edges side' . But the night was a cracker! Enjoyed my self so much that I forgot when to stop playing! Was quickly reminded by the bar staff though. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif .

They even asked If I do house parties but was'nt really sure what to say.

NOW If one of the girls would have asked maybe http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/whistling.gif

but not the father and his mates. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/fright.gif
