Continuing our series of interviews with DJU Forum members, this week we talk to Tony (AKA "The Spindoctor").

How long have you been DJ'ing?

In total just over 20 yrs as a full time professional 16yrs.

What inspired you to become a DJ?

It’s a DJ thing I always loved being the centre of attention.

What type of "Do" was your first gig?

Working doing music for a CB club every Thursday night

How much did you charge (Mikeee please convert this from Shilings and pence to decimal when its your go..)

No pay for the CB club got into it for love.

What equipment did you have to begin with?

FAL Mono Deck with built in 50w amp, 2x home made speakers, 2 x fall column lights, 1 x 2ft square light screen.

Whats the worst/most embarassing thing you've done in front of an audience?

Got legless at daughters 18th birthday, and sang to the tune of You’re Sixteen Ringo Starr….. She’s Eighteen and she’s mine!!! To her boyfriend! Other than that a blinding night but I don’t remember it!

What is your favourite type of function now? EG: Wedding, 18th Birthday party, funeral wake..

Weddings Christmas and anything to do with kids.

Is there anything that you include in your show now, that you wish you'd done/known when you started? (Not equipment, but in human/performer terms)

Chatter! I used to be very mike shy, but since starting to do Quizzes as an entertainer got over that and now more and more bookings come in due to personality. Quiet DJ’s are ok but best for clubs.

What do you feel you offer your public, that makes you a better DJ than "the next guy/girl"?

Preparation, and reliability, e.g. I was asked to name my price for New Years Eve 1998 but was already booked 12 months previous for £250. It was so tempting to take the offer and hire a DJ in. I did’nt and because of that got more respect from the businessman who made the offer and his contacts. It has paid me back a hundred times over in work.

Have you ever bought something for your show that you wish you hadnt? and why?

2 x 5mw red lasers when they first came out, excellent in a pitch black room but no use at your average wedding/birthday.

Whats your next DJ purchase likely to be?

A better sound system probably Bose or Electrovoice

If you could get someone to invent a new piece of disco equipment for your show, what would it be?

More lighter light screens??? (I have no idea)

What do you think is the best thing about DJ'ing.

Meeting different people from all walks of life every night

What do you think is the worst thing about DJ'ing.

The lack of social life

What would make you stop DJ'ing (if anything).

Ill health

How do you think DJ'ing will change, in the next 5 years?

Hopefully legislation will drive out the cowboys leaving us with a profession to be proud of even if it costs us a little more to stay legal.

Most stupid thing anyone's ever said to you at a gig?

Do you have a real job in the day

Best advice you were ever given by a fellow DJ?

Play to the punters ALWAYS, not what you like.

And worst advice you were ever given

You’ll never make a full time career of it (Sorry Dad)!

Name 3 songs that 95% of the time will fill you dance floor!!

Chris Montez – Let’s Dance

Tight Fit – Back to the sixties

Weather Girls/Geri – Its Raining men

Age 47yrs

Location Essex Kent Border

Martial status Married

Education level Grammar School ‘O’ levels

Jobs Was a Police constable for more than 10 yrs before turning full time Pro DJ

Mode of transportation Toyota Previa (blacked out windows) and Tow A Van

What equipment do you currently use?

Bloomin heck where to start Ok Citronic CD3 Twin player, BST 8 channel mixer, Lyonforge 800w amp, Unbadged Amp 600w, Light Jockey light controller, Packard Bell laptop, 2x 600w Bass bins, 2 x 300w Full Range Deltecs, 2 x 100w tops, 8x light screens assorted sizes biggest 3ft x 3 ft, 2 x Rockballs, 2 x Abstract Gladiator 1ce, 2 x chameleon 4s, 2 x mini strobes, 1 x moon flower, 1 x Genii Spin, 4 x multihead gobo thingy, 1 x fanlight, 2 x red lasers, 2 x green lasers, 1 moving sign, 1 x lighting gantry, 1 x T bar and 2 x 4ft UV’s

How much have you "invested" in equipment?

Over 20 yrs probably in excess of £20,000

What was your reason for becoming a DJ?

Fame and Fortune??? Heh heh heh

Approximately how many gigs have you done to date

Well, this may be like painting a target on my back http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/fear.gif

But, I'm more-or-less back on-line properly now...eg: not just accessing DJsunited from my mobile....(and I've got a real keyboard back again, not having to write each letter individually with a little stylus/pointer.... http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Oh Sheesh guys thanks for reminding me............. apologies I was so shell shocked from all those questions!

Ho hum onward then ................. Gary was too obvious a target having practically volunteered, so before she forgets all she's learnt or decides she is 'resting' I thought perhaps auntie Paula should give us the benefit of her expereience.
