One gig this weekend, surprise 60th birthday.

Booking passed to me by another local DJ who has more bookings than he can cope with so asked if I could do his bookings at this particular venue for him. This is the first of about 6 during the summer that I will be doing for him so am hoping it goes well.

Just in from doing my one club gig before continuing my holiday by coming home to the uk on tuesday.

Just a couple of tips ....did a shakira mix with "hips dont lie " ( original on dirty dancing 2 soundtrack by the way ) and "la tortura" fit nicely and are about the same bpm. Also noticed in Greece last week and again here in Norway the single by Helena Paparizou (binty who won eurovision a couple of years ago)" Mambo" is being flogged to death at pubs \clubs \radio and works with the shakira type stuff.

The most requested record at present is Nelly Furtado " maneater" which i cant figure at all as its most odd. Anyway hope everybodies gigs were successful this weekend.

I will try anything,once!

Great 18th last night, probably the best one so far, but i guess every gig is http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/tongue.gif

went down at 12 to set up ready, and came back at 7. played some of the latest stuff early in the evening and then onwards was pure cheese, love shack, macrena, agadoo, superman, opps upside your head. They loved it! played some of the classic and latest dance anthems towards the end and then finished with the monkees - daydream beliver and queen - bohiemium rhopsody. got loads of thankyous and handshakes, and cards handed out http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif

No two functions are the same.

No two crowds are the same either.

Had a good illustration of that this weekend.

Friday's wedding reception was a 90 mile drive away. Everything was in place for a smooth set up on arrival at 14.00. Start was at 16.00 with background music through dinner ( which the extremely hospitable groom insisted we share ). This was followed by a speech from the groom then a quiz, devised by the bride and groom and presented by the latter.

The very personable groom then went on to present his version of "Deal Or No Deal" which was hilarious. We were then scheduled to present a version of "Mr & Mrs" but time was running out so it was decided to have 90 minutes of music before our 23.00 finish. During this period the bride and groom showed off their newly acquired ballroom dancing skills to a couple of tracks.

There were just 40 people in attendance but it was a great day and evening. The bride and groom were very appreciative as well as being thoroughly nice people.

Saturday's wedding reception was only forty five minutes away but a complete contrast and a good example of how the attitude of the newlyweds can influence an event. The booking was made by the bride's mother who couldn't get the bride and groom to say anything about music for the evening. They had eight months to decide on a first dance but couldn't agree so "Have I Told You Lately" by Van Morrison was chosen on the night. That was their total musical input and the only time the groom took to the floor, although the bride came on a couple of times.

The majority of guests ( there were around 60 ) were middle aged or older and most didn't dance. Eventually a hardcore of almost exclusively female guests took to the floor and danced throughout the evening.

Most guests were polite and friendly but there was a significant minority who were quite rude in making requests ( although I don't think they realised it ). There was a small group of eight in their late teens/early twenties whose particularly vociferous spokesman thought himself Mr Supercool.

Examples of requests:

"Got Walking On Sunshine?" ( not the Rocker's Revenge track, by the way )

" put that on and pep it up a bit" ( There were already quite a few people dancing to some uptempo stuff).

"Can you play some old soul?" and "Got The Ketchup Song" ( from the same person )

"Got Grease mega-mix? Put it on" ( there was a thread on here a while ago about stereotypical wedding tracks. If ever there was one this is it ).

"I've been here three hours and you haven't played the Beatles" ( obviously not listening then ).

"Got any Lulu?"

"Can you play something more modern - like the Pussycat Dolls?"

“Can you play ‘Tragedy’” ( Mr Supercool on behalf of a twelve year old )

"Can you stop playing this pop music for twelve year olds and play 'From Paris To Berlin' so I can do the Lassoo Dance?" ( Mr Supercool )

The bride and groom left at 23.40. At least most people got up to form a tunnel to see them off when I asked.

Finished with a bit of dance mixing for Mr Supercool and his friends but they only had enough stamina for a half dozen tracks.

Scheduled finish time was 01.00 but with everyone gone by 00.30 we finished then.

Not a terribly satisfying evening and a complete contrast to the day before.

Still, if every gig was great it would be boring ( or would it?! )

Quite a quiet weekend really.

Friday I did a surprise 50th birthday party, unfortunately the limo didn't show, nor did half the guests, the birthday boy was 'surorised' by 20 people, maily close family, all 70's fancy dress theme, so every record came for thatera. Great night to listen to music, not to dance to it though.

Saturday I had three weddings on, one in Cornwall, which Jim from Centrestage did for me, one in Torquay, which was covered, and I did another wedding not too far away also, normal drunk night, not great. As Andy (DJ Westy) saidd I had a phone call at 1830hrs from a someone who was calling on behalf of someone, who was needing a disco, anyway the woman who was organising her daughters 18th birthday party rang me eventually, it was a small venue in a small town, with limited parking, appartently a DJ (who I will not mention here, although I know his name etc) turned up, and was allowed to park near the venue to unload but had to park around the back after, he didn't like that so told the woman to *+%^ off and sped home (or to a better paying gig), I knew Andy wasn't working so a few telephone calls, and he was on his way. Got a telephone call at 9.30 this morning both thanking me, and Andy, it was a great night. All ended happy, and Andy owes me a round of golf.....................................one day. Well done Andy and Jamie. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/notworthy.gif

Off to the horses now, not betting but feeding etc, then back for the football, as I am not out tonight...........yet.

.....but what do I know ?

No two functions are the same.

No two crowds are the same either.

How true that is.

The last gig I did before becoming ill, The birthday boy's sister had requested Grease, & Born to Hand Jive for him as he loves Grease. So I decided to finish off the grease set with We Go Together. It died on it's a http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/pooh.gif se and cleared the floor. One grease track too many http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/533.gif

Last night was at a wedding as a guest. He played Grease, Summer Lovin' and finished the set with We Go Together, and he never lost a single dancer, in fact, even more got up for the last one.

Just goes to show.

Ohh, i found the Austin Powers tune. It's Soul Bosa Nova by Quincy Jones! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/thumbup.gif

Aaah, wish I'd known that Friday, could defo have played it, great track.

Friday: did a wedding in yet anoter venue with a sound limiter, but yet again the PAS seemed to work well with it. Got the music request list including first dance 3 hours before the gig due to http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/188.gif agent not passing it on in time (must stress this is not my regular agent who is good as gold), luckily I had all the music except the 1st dance http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/scared.gif which I d/l from itunes just before I left for the gig.

Saturday: Got a gig in a hotel in Tonbridge, apparently the resident casually told the hotel he would not be able to turn up on Saturday this Friday! I asked the hotel what his contracts stated, they said - 'what contracts?' http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/oops.gif What can I say, his loss, and we are £300 better off for it. Good gig, well attended, once again many thanks to Pete Musicbox for the help, and PARTYCHRIS for the 'did you say you didn't have a gig on Saturday' call . http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/grouphug.gif http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/thumbup.gif

Friday night was first class.... had every one up and bouncing arround for 98% of the evening...

Saturday night was a bit of a let down http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/sad.gif the bar had been taken over by a new manager 2 weeks before... and he is trying to get it all going again as the previous manager was balmed for there being no customers in and the ones who used to come in were all drunk and fighting too much..

So I did my best with the very few people who did come in...

sadly not many of them wanted to stay as this bar is surrounded by clubs and other bars who dont have holes in the walls and dont seem to have a problem with trouble makers...

a sad case of too many venues and not enough people....

It also didnt help that the manager insisted that we play the music at ear bleeding sound levels and becuase (like every bar manager http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/wallbash.gif ) he clames he used to be a DJ he made requests for songs that I had to play that were not helping the situation... I even let him have a go and he started to play some real rubbish cheese that wont work with a half empty venue...

Im so Glad I was only covering for who ever the normal DJ is...

Normal place for me on Saturday Turned up to a packed venue, but mainly women on hen nights. A stripper turned up and was better than the normal one, in terms of the amount of time he spent there, not in fit status. I think I only saw 2 men on the dancefloor all night. One of the men danced like the guy in Hitch and it was difficult to keep a straight face as he bopped away in front of me. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif I prefer it when there is more of a mix as I think alot of 'older' women are very fickle about what they will dance to so was quite hard to keep a packed dance floor. But Soul Bossa Nova went down well so will definatley try it again. Floor clearer this week was Trapped by Colonel Abrahams.

One fun thing was a hen party who had dressed up as different pop groups/stars and they wanted a song by each of them. So sorted out a song for all their people and before each one did a little announcement and they all went down great, especially Dolly Parton - 9 to 5.

Also due to trying to get extended opening hours a sound limiter had been fitted. I know nothing about these things so do't know how they vary, but this was fitted to the DJ equipment and to me even though I had everything turned up to the max still seemd too quiet, at times I could barely make out the words to songs. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/sad.gif The crowd didn't seem to notice. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif One of the waiters came and fiddled with the knobs a couple of times but didn't seem to make much difference.

http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/oops.gif Sorry Leonna, had a very hectic weekend, forgot to call you and let you know about this. The owners had this piece of kit lying around (it's a compressor limiter, not a sound limiter), and asked me to wire it in for them, which I did on Thursday evening. I printed off a manual which is in the DJ booth which you can find here: Alesis 3630 PDF

However, I have no idea how they work either, although the second know from the left seems to make a difference!

I have put them in touch with an expert, who will no doubt sort this out as well as the lights http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/smile.gif
