Everybody knows the benefits of having seperate accounts for Business and Personal banking. But many are prevented from taking out a bank account in their business name because of prohibitive bank charges levied at everyday transactions such as cashing cheques and depositing cash.

Previously, it was possible to migrate between various banks, each providing a limited number of months of free banking.

Fortunately, some banks are starting to support small businesses and Abbey have now introduced their small business account which is FREE of bank charges for life*.

For more information Visit the Abbey website

* Free upto a maximum number of transactions per month, which is generous and more than enough for most small business requirements

I looked at this, but decided against it, because the nearest paying in machine is 30 miles away for me, and the £3000 limited is a little too close for comfort.

Am in the process of opening a FSB Co-Op Bank account, free if you are a member of the FSB, as HSBC are charging me on average about £60 - £80 per month.

.....but what do I know ?

Alliance and Leicester also do a free banking service which has been pretty good before, apart from the internet banking which seems like it was designed by someone who's never had a bank account in their life!

I decided not to go for abbey as i couldn't find anywhere that told me if there were charges for transfering to other banks and the "free transfers to your other abbey accounts" implied that there might be.

Oh, and you can pay into your A&L account from any post office...

But try taking money out at a PO(If Blair hasn't closed it down already) and you will have trouble I believe.

This looks good to me http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/goodjob.gif

The only thing that's put me off changing up to now is that I have loads of direct debits/standing orders which I will have to cancel and then re-do with a new account (plus my current bank will charge me for each one cancelled http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/mad.gif )

However, long term I will benefit so I'll be looking into this http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/beer.gif

Chris, do you know whether there are charges when transferring payments to other banks?

To be honest i'm just in the process of opening an account myself.

There isn't any mention of BACS transfers between other accounts, so i'm not too sure.

However the previous business account I had had no charges for issuing cheques but a charge for transfer to another account, so all I did to get around it, was to write a cheque and deposit it into the other account - the clearing time was about the same so other than the time to write the cheque there was nothing lost.

£3,000 in cash deposited per month FREE forever

That's fine for 11 months of the year, BUT in December....

Unless they mean £3K in actual cash rather than cheques/transfers etc...? No, it's gotta be actual cash. Looks good. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/cool.gif

I've got personal and business accounts with Abbey. So far I haven't received any charges from transferring funds to or from the business account. I haven't actually used the personal account so couldn't tell you.

I have used the Abbey business banking without a hitch for nearly 4 years now.

There are no charges for BACS payments (4 working days). Generally the service is good and certainly acceptable for a free service.

A deposit limit of £3000 per month in cash (plus up to 100 cheques) is more than adequate for most as there is no limit on the value of cheques.

You can also receive as much as you like via electronic transfer.

Why would you want to when you have a debit card you can use at any hole in the wall?
