I was chatting with a venue manager a few days ago, and she mentioned something that made me think. She asked me where do I store my equipment. The reason being that this venue sees a lot of different discos, and being a very smart venue, the room is occasionally let down by a smelly disco! She said that recently, a DJ turned up with musty smelling kit. This was notably unpleasant.

Many years ago, I had some equipment damage from a leaking roof which resulted in me getting rid of some speakers for this reason. Luckily, I have a very dry storage facility which means this should no longer happen.

Occasionally, some punter decides to give my speakers an unwanted wine wash, and this smells bad on the way home, but a good clean usually removes the offending waft.

Mine used to smell "smokey" when I was primarily in pubs and working mens clubs, but that was a lifetime ago.

My lock up is very dry and secure.

I have noticed smells on trade in gear when I was in retail. Try smelling inside a speaker cab that has been gigged for years in pubs http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/thumbdown.gif

Keep all mine in the corner of the dining room, wife not too impressed though. Surprising how much room it all takes up.

Only bit that has a very slight smell (barely noticeable now) after scrubbing at least 3 times and twice going in the washing machine is one of the speaker covers that some tit threw up on. Not impressed at the time.

Ive got a shed in my garden... 7ft x 5 ft, i got that crammed with stuff... a bedroom crammed with stuff...(more valuable stuff, like CD players, which would get damaged in the shed from damp), i also have a lock-up unit on an industrial site, where i keep alot of the gear which i don't use/ old/ needs repair...etc... The lock-up is newish, and my gear smells of "new"! lol

The Shed stored gear, even though in the winter, its damp, it doesn't seem to make anything smell of damp... http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/533.gif

And i get numerous plug in fresheners around the house, so my gear stored indoor, smells of lavender! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/tongue.gif

Does my gear smell? That's a bit of a personal question, isn't it? http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/blush.gif

Oh, you mean disco gear. Never before a function. - I keep most of mine in my dry ventilated garage (apart from the CD's and console which stay in the house).

However after the occasional function it smells of smoke - hence why it lives in the garage. (Also disco gear in the house doesn't go down well with other halfs.)

We have stuff in and out of the workshops every day and yes, it ALL smells. It's mostly fags, I'm afraid.

The only stuff that smells sweet is Schools stuff, Aerobics or Studio stuff.

The rest stinks!! Easy to tell if that 2nd hand CD player has been 'gigged' or not.

The smell extends to CD's / Vinyl as well.
