Today, we continue the series of DJU Member interviews, and talk to Paula.

How long have you been DJ'ing?

How longs a bit of string?

What inspired you to become a DJ?

I fell into it, as a daughter of a dj and the only one out of four to be interested in it and trained in case of emergencies it seemed only right to follow it on as well as having the buzz for it of course!

What type of "Do" was your first gig?

Supervised or should I say conned into a 40th birthday party with a very ill Dad.

My first Disco & Karaoke together was for the RAF London wing air-training core & my first Karaoke was in a pub in Hampton.

How much did you charge (Mikeee please convert this from Shillings and pence to decimal when its your go..)

Can’t remember the makes of me equipment let alone that! Probably less than 100.

What equipment did you have to begin with?

Nooooo you don’t want to no!

I had one of them all in one console things with a front light screen which cost a grand total of £299.99, a Toshiba cd player and a radio shack tape deck and 2 homemade side screens, and no this was not the Saxon one Chris & Mike, some of you wont know what I’m talking about and is best off left that way.

Then I bought my first cdg player which was made by Fidelity, decided it never really went that well with the disco so went out and bought my first karaoke set up.

What’s the worst/most embarrassing thing you've done in front of an audience?

Embarrassing? Was probably when I turned down my then boyfriends marriage proposal, cringe cringe & worst in which I still haven’t learnt my lesson as I also done it last Saturday is to end the track I just cant help believing way to early, those with this on karaoke will know what I mean.

The singer gets very very annoyed!

What is your favourite type of function now? EG: Wedding,18th Birthday party, funeral wake.

Birthday parties and pubs do’s.

Is there anything that you include in your show now, that you wish you'd done/known when you started? (Not equipment, but in human/performer terms)

Not that I can think of.

What do you feel you offer your public, that makes you a better DJ than "the next guy/girl"?

I wouldn’t say that I was a better Dj/Kj than someone else there will always be another Dj that you will think is good or an idea that you get off them that you find yourself adopting but with a long history of it and the fact that we’ve got ooodddlles and ooodddlees of tracks which of course is the main necessity in this business then I think that’s more than enough, you cant be a Dj/Kj without!

Have you ever bought something for your show that you wish you hadn’t? And why?

Everything I buy! As then I see something else I would of liked, I could be stuck in a loop forever. Very indecisive! I did buy a light screen early on in the year that I got rid of very soon after to another dj who I know has also passed it on, give it another week and Spin’s likely to have it.

What’s your next DJ purchase likely to be?

A Complete new set up but have not decided on what yet.

If you could get someone to invent a new piece of disco equipment for your show, what would it be?

Walking equipment would be nice, so I wouldn’t have to carry it.

What do you think is the best thing about DJ'ing.

The buzz of seeing people enjoying what you’re providing, with being a Kj you get to meet an awful lot of people and of course make friends.

What do you think is the worst thing about DJ'ing.

Most definitely the lack of a social life, just call me Bridget.

What would make you stop DJ'ing (if anything)?

When I find myself wearing big knickers and writing my everyday happenings in a diary & you lot really do start calling me Bridget.

It would have to be boredom or at the moment; personal reasons!

How do you think DJ'ing will change, in the next 5 years?

Only our equipment

most stupid thing anyone's ever said to you at a gig?

Where’s the Dj?

Best advice you were ever given by a fellow DJ?

Never pre plan, play it by ear & don’t ramble they are there to enjoy them selves and the music not listen to you promote yourself, if you’ve done a good job they will come to you.

And worst advice you were ever given

To buy a strobe light

Name 3 songs that 95% of the time will fill you dance floor!!

I’m going to be different on this one as you’ve got so many dj’s posting there’s I’m going to give you my most requested Karaoke tracks after all you've only got me & Dan that do karaoke.

Angels – Robbie Williams

Mustang Sally – The Commitments

Paradise By The Dashboard Light - Meatloaf

3 x jvc cdg,vcd players.

300w kam amp

Behringer eurotrax thingy mixer

Kam gmx??? Mixer

Mc Gregor amp, Monster that takes loads of welly!

Eminence,Ohm & no name speakers, which once upon a time said, sound something on them?

1 21” & 2 12” TV’s

8 mic’s, headphones!

My first cdg player, Lights and Lights and more Lights but cant remember what they all are….

2 Kam tt’s, somewhere! & Loads of other things that have been re-eathed.

How much have you "invested" in equipment?

Ooooodles!

What was your reason for becoming a DJ?

So I could go to a party every week (well that’s what I thought when I was 17)

Approximately how many gigs have you done to date?

Can’t remember that, from last July to this July I done 164 gigs.

But that was my busiest year

Good interview but maybe i'm old or something............ what the hell is a WAH-64 Apache...........is it a helicopter???

Spin

When I read it, I too thought that it was an American Attack Helicopter...

Well, its probably the only way of finding a parking spot in London nowadays, AND taking out a few Congestion Charge Camera's in the process..... http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

The Apache is a twin-engined army attack helicopter developed by McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing). It entered service with the US Army in 1984 and has been exported to Egypt, Greece, Israel, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom. The US Army has more than 800 Apaches in service, and more than 1,000 have been exported. The Apache was first used in combat in 1989 in the US military action in Panama. It was used in Operation Desert Storm, has supported low intensity and peacekeeping operations world wide

Yes it's the only way to get around in London these days. Apart from her trusty old tank, which always guarantees a parking space outside Harrods, when Paula and Karen go shoe shopping, even if it means flattening a few BMW's and Mercs to get it!!. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/tongue.gif

Well Andy it's a case of the beer goggles! Ever thought that after 5 pints that bird in the corner is beautiful! to find out the next day your pint actually had a better head on it? It's the same for singers after 5 pints they think there on totp's! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Don Mclean's version of American pie is very long but there's allways Madonna's version!, Bohemian went missing ages ago and I never bothered to replace it....But...the most painful of them all is............

Dear Diary!

12:25pm.

Yesterday I beat up an eskimo with my Diary and have safely stored him under my bed until he regains concisuness!

Today I have so far been chased around the dj's united common room by Andy dressed as a giant pizza shouting Eat me! Although I advertised myself for dinner companship during the annual plasa gathering I dont think Andy's Pizza applies to my liking!

Chris wants to intoduce me to Bernie http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/blink.gif as a way of not being selected for the next hotseat contendant, even though the silly boy has once been selected all ready! I think he's got jam sarnies stuck in his ears!

And And ....the best offer I've had so far today is a fry up down the caf......to be continued after breakfast http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/042.gif

Nice to see the Diary's coming on well Bridget. Be careful about the dinner invitations though, cos your old diary's were always going on about how worried you were about your weight http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

Maybe a trip to the Pizza hut salad bar would keep your diary happy http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/tongue.gif
