I did a post a while back about working with bands and the fact they are selfish with regards to setting up space.

I went to set up this afternoon for my job tonight (Fri 25th). Am having a change from my residency as I go away tomorrow and could of done with a bit more looty.

Anyway I knew the band where going to the hotel to set up at 2pm. So off I went to set up my gear at 2pm so I ccould leaise with the band over the space. When I arrived the band had been and gone.

Below are some photo`s. Some are poor quality so please excuse them.

You could have set up on the stage......just up the steps and be centre of attention! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/tongue.gif

Tried that, it didn`t work. The ceiling comes down quite low up the stairs.

Similar scenario, Worked with a band last night, huge venue (450 people, comfortably). They had their 10" tops and 15" bins, and had taken the whole stage up, they then had the cheek to say to me "you better not get in our F http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/censored2.gif ing way".... with that, i waited until they left, and with enjoyment, placed my 18" bins and 15" top on poles, directly in front of theres! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/laugh.gif

They then came back to sound check, gave me the daggered eyes http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/fear.gif , and blew their tops on the sound check! haha!

So they asked if i could sort them with a PA rig....last minute.... my efforts.... charged em £500 for me to go to my lock-up and get my PA desk and rigging! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/tongue.gif

welshy reading your last msg makes you sound such a nasty uncaring person...And I am sure your not... As stated before a band is a focal point audiences like to see the band most bands have a minimum of 4 members...

Some of the band members might move around the stage area as part of there show AKA Mick Jagger, Freddie Murcury etc...

DJ on the other hand are generally one person who stands in the dark and other than a bit of boogie shuffle to the music does not move much... When ever I am with a band I always assume they will take the stage and if i am there first to rig I always leave the biggest area or stage for them...

Please re read your post as if another member who you dont know had posted it...

You have delighted in the fact there PA had blown and you made £500 out of there missfortune... How would the guys on here react if it was a band who had done that to a DJ.... I know they may have said keep out of the F http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/censored2.gif way but they may have had bad experiences with DJs before... I always befriend the band I work with and help where I can... We are all Artists with the same needs and pressures, dont look at them as an enemy and maybe the night will be a better one for you the band and more importantly the people paying the bill...

Sorry about the rant and as I say I am sure you are a very nice chap but your post lets you down on this one .......

sorry, i didnt mean to make myself like a satan or anything! You had to be there to understand where im coming from, forgot to mention another point.....

Have worked with this band before, this is the same band that took great joy, last time, in kicking my speaker tripod over, with the JBL Actives i was using at the time!

It wasn't by accident, and when i asked them why, the drummer said " it looks too big, makes us look a mess and disgrace, go put up smaller, half decent speakers"!

The damage to the speaker was not worth repairing http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/sad.gif

May i back what UK Hero said, MOST bands are very civil, and your night will be much more enjoyable on both parts, if you make the effort to talk to them and interact with them... you never know, you might get a few jobs through them! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/smile.gif

oh, and as to the £500 charge, thats what i charge for band work at last minute anyway!

I for one, am saddened by this post Welshy! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/huh.gif

Nik has hit it square on the head. This kind of behaviour does nothing to enhance the reputation and credibility of Djs.

£500 to pa a band.......well, sorry, that seems a bit OTT too! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/fear.gif

http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/sad.gif thanks guys.... am im the process of writing a letter to the band, of appology for being so unfair, and giving them the next PA hire free....

£500 OTT?

What do you (the PA guys) charge?

I usually go out for £400 when its that size rig needed.... and charged the extra £100, because my lock-up is in cardiff, and the job was in Port Talbot, so i had to cover myself for the extra journeys and carting my Mixer, mics, mic stands...etc then the work of miking up the drum kit and balancing it all....

Forget that! This band sounds like a bunch of A-holes!!! Should of charged them the £500 for the PA hire, and added a bit extra for the damage they did to your speaker last time! If they are so uncomfortable with their performance that a speaker can make them sceme "a mess and disgrace" then maybe they shouldn't be working weddings and corporate events without a bit more practice and they defo need to learn some maners!

lack of manors is not the word... from what i understand now, from speaking to the best man, minutes ago, the drummer actually said to the bride, yes, the bride!! Tell this F http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/censored2.gif ing DJ to move! Now if im wrong, and correct me if i am... but you don't say that to a bride on her big day! As to payments, or questions, i tend to go via the best man....

Ah well, maybe i was completely wrong in my ways, but this doesn't usually happen, and more often than not, i get along well with the bands...

Sorry to cause any offence to anyone....

Totally agree.

What goes around - comes around.

A live artist or band is however the main point of any gig, we are just a sort of 'after-though' to compliment them.

My policy is always to have some contact with any band before the day, and hopefully avoid any problems.

It was a pity they had their "band mobile" switched off... http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/wallbash.gif

I do usually contact all the bands previous to the job!

i tend to side with Nik on this one Welshy your rant to the casual visitor is a little bit immature, & it is just sad that some of the comments made here may show all young deejays in an equally negative light and may explain why some clients hesitate to book younger people. respect is earned and even being a good deejay is often not just what a client is looking for, key people skills and maturity in the challenges which may be thrown at us play a key role in a customer focused area such as ours!. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif i think if any of the b2b on the wedding forum read some of the posts here their fears about mobile deejays would probably be entirely justified http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/fear.gif and all of the rumours they have been told are true!. accepted that the band were possibly the catlyst here and were equally as unprofessional but your public gloating does not make it right. i have worked with some bastards in my time, but i have worked with some decent bands too, and yes you'll get the folk who disappear up their own arses but that applies to deejays as well. always treat people the way that you want to be treated yourself and that applies online too, and the old saying

I really cannot see a problem as you are working for the client and not the band!, if you need a certain minimum area to set up in then make it a contractual requirement!. Lastly, if you do not want to work with bands then do not take the bookings where you are alongside them and i think you will find your problem is solved and the rest of us who do not mind can share the additional work http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/tongue.gif

So back to steve and his dissmay at not being on or sharing the stage...

Looking at

1, The Stage Size

2, There kit

3, Your Kit

Can you explane to me how all of you would have got on that stage with comfort and it still looked good... Or did you want the band to go in the corner and only you on the stage????

Guys especially younger new DJ's when playing a gig with a band as hard as it may be "You are not the centre of attraction" THEY ARE....

Sorry but i thought they were getting paid to entertain the customers the same as the DJ.

I don't see anything different. Both acts are there to entertain but in slightly different ways.

The bands will grab the limelight (and the space) as thier "percieved" egos are usually bigger than the DJs.

I do find that when bands play at private celebrations sometimes thay forget who should be the centre of attention IE the birthday girl or the B&G, and tend to think that all the punters are here just to see them!

Last night I worked with an irish band at a wedding (which ran late by hour & half!!) and I did three sets, 10,15 and 25 minutes!!! They had most of the space which kinda suited me, less gear for me to haul about and in all fairnes they did 2x45 min spots so therefore did the majority of the work. I hadn't been told I was with a band by the function manager. I don't think they knew to be honest.

Still got my normal fee though............ http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/whistling.gif

I just want to tidy up my comments yesturda... i perhaps, miss worded it, and made it sound like i was the scrooge of working with bands..... and over charge, well, im not! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif

Just to balance the equation out....

Another Band i work for (and used to play in), i do all their PA work, and disco's in between and after sets, they book me, and add that onto their quote when they get quoted by the party host, planner..etc......

I get £100 for that.... YES £100, thats including Disco.... ok, they are very good mates of mine, and yes, they do take advantage a bit, but i have got a heart you know! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/tongue.gif

Finally, the band i did friday, is the only band ive ever had trouble with, all the other bands i have worked with have been superb and great people to work allong side! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/thumbup.gif

AS to the oringinal theme to this post.... im happy to set up along side of the stage....etc... no probs to me! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/smile.gif

Yes but by centre of attention i mean looked at.... Do you like a crowed of people looking at you when your DJing (And yes i know you like them dancing) etc... I agree with K that the B & G are obviously the centre of atention as far as the whole day goes... But as far as the visual aspect of the entertainment it has to be the band...

I suppose the punters could sit and marvel at our fantastic DMX light shows for 2X45 min sets lol

I don't mind people looking at me when i.m DJing, it helps when working a crowd to see their expressions

I have worked with bands and luckily they also realised that the disco helped to tie the sets together to make a good night,

rudeness of any band/disco to another performer should never be an issue

have fun

and if the punters look at my DMX light show, i turn them off (they are only for me)lol
