1. What is your DJU Forum Alias?

Desperate Dan

2. What is your Real Name, Age, Location & Marital Status?

Danny Barrett, 29, Stockport, Almost Married 2 Kids

3. What is the Name of your Disco?

Dandy Discos & Member of The Wedding DJ's

4. How long have you been a DJ?

Approx 11years

5. What inspired you to become a DJ

Always had a interest in music and rugby club I played for decided to buy their own gear which I was allowed to use and borrow

6. Are you a member of a DJ Association / Union?

No.

7. What is your favourite type of function now? (eg: Wedding, 18th Birthday party, etc)

Wedding or Childrens Party, - Childrens Parties I always good fun and kids dont judge you on music you play rather on the fun that they have !!

8. What’s the worst/most embarrassing thing you've done in front of an audience?

Terible with remembering names (now in habit of writing details down so they are to hand) Forgetting Name of a Carbaret act I was working with after given them a big build up then pause lots of eyes looking at me ......ermmm your entertainment !

9. If you could go back to the beginning of your DJ career is there anything that you'd do differently? (eg: The gear that you bought, the way you promoted/advertised yourself)

No was quite lucky being able to use gear before getting my own Invested in my own setup once my halifax building society a/c turned into a bank a nice windfall that paid for cd players mixer etc... Then managed to get a pub residency on a friday and the pub also had a function room so ended up in there most saturday nights. Never had to really advertise the business, Which is a big difference now in a new area.

10. What do you feel you offer the public that convinces them to book you rather than "the next guy/girl"?

Genuine, experience, and flexability.

11. Have you ever bought something for your show that you wish you hadn't? and why?

When first started brought a very cheap mic from Tandys (now Maplin) lasted about one gig beofre it broke in my hand lol

12. What's your next DJ purchase likely to be?

I am in the process of re-designing rig completly to target wedding market. So purchase list is quite high getting some dmx lights and powered speakers. Looking to make rig smaller and sleeker.

13. If you could get someone to invent a new piece of disco equipment for your show, what would it be?

I'm sure its been said before but a automatic pack up button

14. What was the worst equipment failure suffered during a gig?

When first started did a gig with borrowed speakers - very old things (I think they were just large hi-fi speakers lol). One packed up almost at the start of the night just glad the party was a freebie for friends rather than a paying client.

15. What do you think is the best thing about DJ'ing?

Definitely the Satisfaction that you have contributed to make somebody's night a success.

16. What do you think is the worst thing about DJ'ing?

Definitely the packing away and dealing with intoxicated people at the end of the evening

17. What would make you stop DJ'ing (if anything)?

If family wanted me too or health.

18. How do you think DJ'ing will change, in the next 5 years?

Things will get smaller and smarter but also hopefully it might become more official to help the DJ name get rid of the Peter Kay image.

19. Most stupid thing anyone's ever said to you at a gig?

What do you mean you have finished ?? (bear in mind we had been finished for approx 30 mins and was just taking the last few loads of gear to the car) and yes we had finished at the aggreed time.

20. Best advice you were ever given by a fellow DJ?

Listen and Watch your audience.

21. And worst advice you were ever given?

None I dont think

22. How do you keep up to date with music? (eg Promo monthly CDs, Downloads, Purchase from retailer)

Now Albums, Legal Downloads as and when needed

23. Name 3 songs that 95% of the time will fill the dance floor for you!

Living on a Prayer - Bon Jovi

Hey Baby - DJ Otzi

Chain Reaction - Diana Ross

24. Mode of transportation.

Renault - Scenic

25. What is the furthest that you've travelled from home for a single gig?

Home in Stockport down to Kent (but was for my sisters pub for a charity event)

26. Approximately how many gigs have you done to date? Pass - Hundreds ?!?

27. What is the largest/smallest audience numbers you've played to?

Smallest - approx 10 / largest about 400.

28. What is your main (most successful) form of advertising your disco?

Word of mouth is always the best kind of advertising and the cheapest, But do now have a website which is staring to be popular with search engines.

29. Have you ever had someone try to claim off you? (eg: Public Liability Insurance or other such legal action)

No

30. Add any additional comments which you would like to include here...

Was lucky when I first started djiing been able to borrow gear without the out lay and then obtaining a residency very quickly. Admittedly wasnt the nicest venue in the world but it was a good place to learn the trade and certainly a good place to learn how to deal with awkward clients.

And Lastly Can I say what a great forum this is and have made some true friends via this forum, Hats off to you all.
