1. What is your DJU Forum Alias?

iany

 

2. What is your Real Name, Age, Location & Marital Status?

Ian Young, 37, Newcastle, Staffs. Married.

 

3. What is the Name of your Disco?

MUZIQUE

 

4. How long have you been a DJ?

Started at the tender age of 20.

 

5. What inspired you to become a DJ

Watching and listening to the DJ's in the pubs and clubs that I used to frequent as a kid.

 

6. Are you a member of a DJ Association / Union?

DJ Association, Musicians Union, maybe the NADJ's soon.... (if they have a membership price sale!)

 

7. What is your favourite type of function now? (eg: Wedding, 18th Birthday party, etc)

A 40th birthday is usually best, or a good wedding. Lots of different types of music, and loads of oldies. You don't get to play many oldies at an 18th birthday - but I do get a few of those types.

 

8. What’s the worst/most embarrassing thing you've done in front of an audience?

Belched in the mic.... dodgy sausage roll I think.

 

9. If you could go back to the beginning of your DJ career is there anything that you'd do differently? (eg: The gear that you bought, the way you promoted/advertised yourself)

Yes - don't buy cheap rubbish from eBay.

Don't bother with yell.com (rip off merchants)

Don't advertise in glossy magazines (not worth the extra outlay)

 

10. What do you feel you offer the public that convinces them to book you rather than "the next guy/girl"?

I always push the Pli & PAT side of things. Plus I always tell them, you can have what you want - you're the client.

 

11. Have you ever bought something for your show that you wish you hadn't? and why?

A cheap nasty laser from eBay. It was awful.

 

12. What's your next DJ purchase likely to be?

At the moment I'm after some Par 64's.

 

13. If you could get someone to invent a new piece of disco equipment for your show, what would it be?

Ermmm.... See all previous interviews.

 

14. What was the worst equipment failure suffered during a gig?

Bulb.

 

15. What do you think is the best thing about DJ'ing?

Oh, playing the types of music that you really love. Its great to see people enjoying it as well. I wonder if anyone else has given the same answer before....? Hmmm......

 

16. What do you think is the worst thing about DJ'ing?

Drunks. Hecklers. Late hours.

 

17. What would make you stop DJ'ing (if anything)?

Nothing at the mo.... Ask me again in a few years.

 

18. How do you think DJ'ing will change, in the next 5 years?

Hopefully, it'll become more regulated with more enforcement. Get rid of the cowboys.

 

19. Most stupid thing anyone's ever said to you at a gig?

'Can I have a go?' Err - no!

 

20. Best advice you were ever given by a fellow DJ?

Keep the ladies happy. Sod the fellas. Play for the ladies, and you're on a winner.

 

21. And worst advice you were ever given?

None really. Boring answer eh?

 

22. How do you keep up to date with music? (eg Promo monthly CDs, Downloads, Purchase from retailer)

I watch a lot of the music channels - plus we've got a 17 year old lad as well....

 

23. Name 3 songs that 95% of the time will fill the dance floor for you!

24. One piece of advice you'd give to someone just starting out.

Don't do things by halves.

 

25. What medium format do you mainly use eg vinyl, CD, hard-drive?

I'm a CD man - although I do carry a laptop, but only for the database.

 

26. Have you embraced/adapted any ideas that you've read about on DJU?

I think so, but I can't remember which. Theres so many on here. Most are good ones, but not all are relevant. One of the best things I got from DJU was my contracts and T&C's.

 

27. What is your best gig ever and your worst?

I did an 18th in March at a dodgy working mens club. The crowd was mostly older ones, but the birthday girl dragged along an awful lot of her friends. All very noisy, loud and drunk.

I just played what they wanted to hear. Not an ounce of trouble! They weren't too keen on the 70's music though, but it did turn into a fantastic night.

The worst was a couple of months ago - charity pub quiz.

Not so much a bad night, just a bad set up.

Very small pub, no room at all, and the landlord set me up on the pool table! Different I grant you - raised some good money though, and I got an invite back again.

 

28. What is your main (most successful) form of advertising your disco?

Website. You can't run a business in this day and age without one.

 

29. Have you ever had someone try to claim off you? (eg: Public Liability Insurance or other such legal action)

Why, what have you heard? It wasn't me - honest. (No).

30. Add any additional comments which you would like to include here...

I'd just like to thank all at DJU for making me feel so welcome when I first joined. Even for someone who's been at it for a bit - you can still learn something.

Also, this forum wouldn't be the same without the likes of mikee, Ads (love ya big fella! xxx), Rendezvous and his bloody L1 thingies or whatever they're called, eskie, welshydj18 (always puttin' his foot in it), that daft paddy fella from Belfast (can't just remember his name.....), that good lookin' guy from Crewe, Ben (I'll have my money now thanks....), kingy, C.S., high fidelity Paul, - basically everyone.

This is a damn good forum - it's the people that make it.

Remember - a DJ is for life, not just a Saturday night.
