Dell Lattitude CSX BIOS password

Recommended Posts

Hi all, someone may be able to help me! We have received a laptop from a chap who has left the company, and in his infinite wisdom, he has passworded the BIOS, and 'forgotten' the password http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/188.gif

Any ideas on how we can make this brick useable as a laptop again? http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/sad.gif

Cheers,

Brian

Some laptops simply have a watch battery / button cell on the motherboard. Take that out for anything from 2 seconds to an hour, and the poor laptop wont even remember what a hard drive is, let alone what the BIOS password was.

Others have a couple of test points/jumper points on the motherboard with some cryptic comments nearby eg: BIO RST pin2+3. Where you move the jumper from pins 1&2 and put it on pins 2&3 for a power up/power down sequence.

Bear in mind though that if the laptop has any trouble in auto-detecting the harddrive parameters eg: Heads, Cylinders, sectors etc... (all of which will be lost after a button cell battery removal), then you'll need to get such info off of the hard drive sticker (if its printed on there) or from Dell.

Have you tried the usual 0000? 000000? 12345678? http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/533.gif

The battery technique Gary refers to helped me Brian. All I had to do is re-select the boot device sequence, set the date and time, etc afterwards.
