If you are eating, I suggest you stop.

I have to go into hospital on Tuesday 12 Sept for some surgery, and here's why:

I can't pee properly. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif

Still listening? Good.

It's an old, old injury sustained when my age was in single figures - what I did (and I recall it well) was climb a fence. The fence was made of small pine trunks and had the small stumps of cut-off branches still on it.

As I was climbing, I slipped, and in true Benny Hill style sat hard on the top of the fence, right on top of one of these protruding stumps. Contrary to popular myth, it isn't the ol' wrinkled retainer which gets a beating, but the urethra. For those not familiar with medical terms the urethra is the wee pipe, connecting your pladder to the outside world.

This injury is unique to males due to the route taken by the urethra, and in such a 'straddle injury' is crushed against the bone.

Wind forward 20 years.......

Scar tissue forms and the diameter of the urethra reduces, and in severe cases can close up altogether. I had it incised about that time, but the condition returned. Believe me, the first pee after that urethrotomy is excruciating.

Last year I was having difficulty again and was referred to Weston General Hospital for treatment; Initially the scar tissue was incised (cut) again, but once again proved ineffective, and now I'm going back for 'The Big One'.

This time it will involve cutting out the damaged section of urethra - about 1.5 centimetres - and reconstructing the missing piece using a bit of skin from the inside of my mouth.

I'm not looking forward to it, but I know that after years of taking 2-3 minutes to have a pee it will be worth it.

Think of me, won't you? http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif

I'll let you all know how it went when I come back - later this week hopefully.

All the best for the op Andy, and having passed a kidney stone I can sympathise with the pain you previously endured. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/014.gif

I heard a joke about this once a long, long time ago....something to do with 'by proxy' http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/rolleyes.gif

Clever those surgeons.

You are a very brave man and I think it was great that you was able to mention it on the forum.

Take care.

Wife asked if we are we going to see any pics?

SORRY! SHE WAS ONLY JOKING!

Are you having this op in the Cumbrian town of Cockermouth? http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/tongue.gif

OK, I'll get me coat!

All the best and I hope it goes well for you?

Thankyou all for your wishes; http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/smile.gif

I thought it might enrich the lives of some of you poor souls out there to know what I had done, and to give you all the opportunity to take the pee a bit, so fire away!

Anyhow.....

I'm home now, and it's bloody painful. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/sad.gif

As expected I had a graft taken from inside my mouth - a 'buccal mucosal graft' - and that isn't actually too bad, just a bit sore as you'd get if you were to bite the inside of your cheek, but a larger area.

I've got a job to walk as everything in that area is bruised, and I can't sit down - I have to lay or stand, and there is an almost constant dull ache to contend with.

For those interested, I have a catheter fitted and have to live with that for about 3 weeks, along with a leg bag for urine collection during the day, and an additional night bag at night. After 3 weeks I'll be recalled for tests to see if the repair is watertight, and if so, I'll have the catheter removed - that's bad enough on it's own - I remember from last year - it's like having your innards ripped out through your willy.......

Apparently I lost quite a bit of blood during the op, this is common as the area is so rich in blood vessels, and was borderline for transfusion but they decided all would be OK as was. I still feel a bit dizzy now as I stand here typing this buit it'll pass.

Finally, I haven't had a poo yet, and I'm not looking forward to it.......

Enjoy your lunch! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif

EDIT:

Someone mentioned photos.

I'll get my camera and a mirror.........

Did you ask if they could "get rid of the pain but keep the swelling" http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/tongue.gif

Glad that you're out and recovering.

Thank goodness it was only a small operation...ahem. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/tongue.gif

Best of luck recovering - start thinking about Christmas set-lists!

Christmas set lists??

I've purposely not propmoted myself much recently as I knew this was coming up, so apart from NYE I'm keeping myself free.

Oh!

And I've had a poo!! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif

  • 2 weeks later...

OK, done and dusted.

Sorry I haven't got anything especially gory for you lot this time.

Had the catheter out last Friday 29th - not pleasant.

Back to work on 9th October.

Review and flowmetry every 3 months for the next year.

That's it, really. We can now let this thread slip off into the sunset..... http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif

Not at all!!

The whole point of this thread was to supply more than the necessary information, for those dodgy enough to revel in it...... http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/huh.gif

The poo reference was possibly not understood: It is normal (apparently) to become a bit constipated after general anaesthetic, and given the site of the surgery I was, to say the least, a little apprehensive about my next bowel movement.

As it happened, it 'passed' without major incident. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/smile.gif
