Driving Across Europe

Recommended Posts

I'm currently planning next years' Holidays (as you do)

I've always wanted to drive across Europe, as I don't do the flying thing on Scarey-Planes and i've finally made my mind up to actually go for it, before I get too old http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/014.gif

I'm looking to take the Ferry Across to France and then drive to Croatia, taking in France, Germany, Austria, Slovenia etc on the way.

RAC Travelroute puts the journey at 1200 miles, which is less than I do in in a average week at work, so i'm not to worried about the drive - once I get used to driving on the correct side of the road http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/rolleyes.gif .

Has anybody else ever visited Croatia and have any tips on the best places to visit?, or any advice about what / where to visit on the way? as I'm hoping to spend a couple of days in Germany and Austria on the way too.

Not a chance, I once drove to the North of Scotland and back in the same day - about 850 miles, Never again!. These distances in one go are best left to Andy Harris!.

It works fine up here, and in Ireland!, it just has a problem with places off the M5, like Glastonbury and Torquay - keeps telling me to do a U-Turn! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif

Nope Vectra long gone. It's a company car, so unlike the Vauxhall its reliable, well serviced and no worries with arranging extensions to Insurance / recovery etc. I wouldn't have trusted the Vectra to make it as far as Dover http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/tongue.gif

During your next few gigs Chris ask at the hotels if they have any staff from the areas you are planning to visit.

I lived in Germany for 4 years and found driving on the right (wrong) side of the road pretty easy - the only time you need to be careful is when there are no other cars around and you could find yourself automatically going to the wrong side of the road when pulling out from a junction http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/oops.gif

Good luck

Thanks Paul, an excellent tip http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/thumbup.gif

I've found an excellent site with lots of advice on driving around Europe. Seems pretty straightforward. Germany's Autobahns are supposed to be one of the safest and well maintained roads in Europe!.

But, on the downside, the Croats seem to have a reputation for tailgating and erratic overtaking! - and that came from somebody who lives there! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/fear.gif . But it surely can't be worse than Birmingham in a Friday rush hour http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif .

Vienna is a must - especially if you're going that way and plan to go through the Karawanken tunnel into Slovakia.

Ljubljana is a good town, especially for nightlife.

In Croatia, you can visit the capital Zagreb.

Go via Luxembourg on the way down (beautiful city/country).

Fags and booze are dirt cheap in Croatia.

Are you taking orders?? http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/tongue.gif
