The bad side to a good job!

Recommended Posts

Hi, Doing a gig last night in Kirkby (Liverpool) started at 8pm was ok nothing spectacular.....half way through the night my new acme barell lights blew their bulbs for some reason (thats the third time in 3 weeks since i have had them) Suspect a fault on the units, but had to go through the motions just incase they were a bad batch of lamps ive been using?

Anyway the club had some scanners mounted into the ceilings, so didnt really lose to much effect.

The van was parked in a locked secure compound at the rear of the club, security lights cctv the lot!! decided to put the 2 faulty units in the back of the van about 9.30pm just to get them out the way really

Came out the club at 12.30....back door window of van smashed to pieces, both barell lights gone! The whole episode will cost me 500 quid, with glass, lights and new sign writing work on the van window. Gutted!

First and last time i do a gig in kirkby! The club was in the middle of a housing estate with 4 high rise tower blocks around it....mmmmmm! asking for trouble i think?

So here we go again...looking for 2 more lights now....but to be honest wouldnt buy acme barells again anyway. Datamoons here we come!!

Sorry to hear about that mate.

Thats the only thing with sign written on your van people will smash the window because there is 95% of the time gonna be something for them to nick in the back lol.

We have the van sign written i always go out and see if its still there every hour or so if its a ruff place or most the time get my dad to take me drop me and the gear off then he takes the van back to base. Cant take any chances these days lol.

Have you checked you still have hubcaps? http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif

Sorry to hear of your loss, I wouldn't leave anything in the car, would rather store it under my DJ stand.

http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/wacko.gif Sorry to hear about your misfortune. I never leave anything in the van, but do worry when loading and unloading that someone could sneak off with something whilst I'm inside getting the next load. Leave gear in house when not in use takes up a lot of space, but there's usually someone here unless I'm gigging and then the gears with me. If I used a lock-up It would have to be near so I could keep an eye on it. Does anyone insure thier gear?

Hi Mate,

Yes me, with Musicguard, cost £127 for £4000 cover plus £10,000 personal accident and £2 million PLI.

I have a lock-up which is fully alarmed with 2 passives. The door is double locked and always has a vehicle with a steering lock (also alarmed to the teeth) blocking it. This is the only entry point to it. I have tried my best, but if they are determined to get in....

I have no insurance on my kit, which is a bit foolish, but Insurance companies will wriggle, twist, wriggle a bit more and then twist again to try to not pay out on band and Disco gear believe me. I have experiences of three friends of mine who have all had problems when trying to claim off insurance policies.

My tip: READ THE SMALL PRINT VERY CAREFULLY, you will be surprised by some of the clauses. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/pooh.gif

Just a thought... for anyone...when you arrive at the gig, and have unloaded in the last fading rays of warm (ish) afternoon sun... park your van well away from where the fire exit doors are and...

...move your magnetic signs with "NIGHT SOUNDZ DISCOZ" written all over them, onto the caretakers clapped out old estate car.... http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/whistling.gif

Always insure your equipment or at least the most expensive bits! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/smile.gif , you never know what will happen, and even a £127 annual policy is better than a £500 loss - don't forget your premium is tax deductable, so profit better spent protecting your investment than in the revenue's pocket http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/smile.gif .

Always read the policy on any insurance and see the C.A.B if you need any terms to be clarified. Exclusions may be evident for equipment left unattended in venues or stored in an unsecure environment or vehicle. If you have any problems in respect of insurers paying a claim, then you can always appeal to the Insurance Ombudsman - all it takes is a letter with the facts.

Don't forget that you get £1000 free equipment cover if you are a member of the Musicians Union and competitive policies for additional cover are available from MusicGuard

Other ways of protecting your gear, include security marking in UV ink with your postcode of each piece of equipment (cost £3), and always log serial numbers too, as this helps the police to identify it, if it is ever recovered.

If you really need to leave equipment in cars unattended, then always lock it securely even when paying for fuel, and consider investing in an insurance approved alarm system (about £150). Blacking out windows in vans with one way filters is also a good option (£20).

If you leave your equipment stored in a trailor or vehicle on your property for any length of time, always lock it securely and in the case of a trailor fit a wheel clamp or other immobiliser. Considering buying a cheap CCTV camera (from £29) (or just a CCTV warning sign!), and if you have an existing house alarm, you can buy wireless door contacts and PIR's to easily extend protection to outbuildings, trailors and vehicles where gear may be stored. PIR Floodlights are also a must for the area of storage.

Also remember that if your vehicle is damaged when it is broken into, then your car insurance may be void if they find that it is not insured for DJ use, and the car was damaged by theft of professional equipment whilst used for business activities - so they may not pay out for loss or damage.

Hate it when some one get done over with gear missing, if ever caught they should have thier hands cut off, then they cant do it again.

I use my non-Disco van for that reason, unless they see me unload they don't know whats in it, till there in it with all the arlams going off don't think there stay aroung too long lol.

I use to store gear at home but it was too much on show, an easy target so,

I have just taken out a storage unit about 5 miles away from my house.

It is fully self contained, fully enclosed including the ceiling and warm. I can gain access to it 7 days a week and 24 hours, fully alarmed and is fully insured, my key is the only key as I had to supply a padlock it could have 2 on it if i want, I had to inform the insurance company the full value of the gear, wait for them to give ok before I could store it there so there is no come backs later. So after a gig I can unload on my way home if i want to and no one in the area knows where it is etc.

Or on a Sunday morning it's just so easy now.

It is also easier to load from the store to the van take 15 mins to unload or load, they have the correct trolley's there and only cost £60 per month.

Now I have peace of mind.

Chris P this might be area for the forum to pick up as there are nation wide and other members on here might be interested in this idea and we could get a discount.

The company I use is Access it is the only one I could find that was fully enclosed, but with the others you fix a roof on it quite easy.

Mine is 25 square foot. there are bigger sizes and I have to have on a 6 months periode I asked for that to get the price down.

If you take on a yearly term it's cheaper still. etc.

Hope this is of some help to other members.

Pete

This was a one off to be honest....Nothing was in the van until later on when i decided (stupidly) to put the lights back in to get them out the way.

They robbed my 2 speaker stands too

Have a feeling it was someone who was in the venue now, all very sussy, secure car park and cameras bla bla, knew it was there and knew i was djing etc

mmmmmmm?
