Ive been Djing for about 1 year now. A lad in my college played a set with Judge Jules the other night, and im a bit *'d off that considering i am almost as good as this lad...i have NO gigs.

How am i supposed to get into it, ive tried approaching club manager's but they wont even speak to me.

Do you guys know of any ways of getting a residency at a club & do you know any club owners who are looking for *cheap* but good DJ's.

I propably sound abit desperate, im just bored of sitting here with no gigs rather than playing out, one of you might be able to help so its worth a try.

try doing a demo cd and a covering letter, send it to them directly and then keep phoning them up until they give in and speak to you, ask them if they received it and what they thought of it.....even if you are annoying the c:cense: out of them, at least you can say you have their attention!!! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/071.gif

This isn't really my domain, but I can give you one or two tips about demo CD's.

I'm really talking about radio, but I'm pretty sure the same rules probably apply for clubs.

Most demo CD's go straight in the bin - accept that as a fact. But CD's are cheap these days so who cares, keep sending.

Now, assuming it doesn't hit the bin first, your first 30 seconds are vitally important.

If you haven't created a good impression by then, it is unlikely the rest of it will even get a listening, so in the bin it goes.

Be your own worst critic. Listen to what you have produced first. If there is even the tiniest glitch in anything you've done or said don't let it pass. It has to be 100% spot on. (Don't ya just hate those stupid people who keep talking about giving 110% - bollox)

The manager/controller, call him what you will, realises that this is a "prepared" piece of work. It will be assumed it is your BEST effort. If you let the slightest error pass, it makes a statement about YOUR standards - so what can you be expected to be like "live"?

To help avoid it going straight into the bin make your demo CD look interesting. Make an interesting cover for it (I said interesting, not naff) so that it will stand out over and above the rest of the pile of todays hopefuls.

Hope this helps a little and good luck.

Essentially, there is no short quick easy answer I'm afraid - you'll have to continue doing the leg work and take the knocks along the way but as you said, it is worth a try!

Maybe you could hook up with another established DJ in the meantime, exchange contact details and work out something when the said DJ is getting lots of enquiries?

It's far better to be networking with fellow Djs in the business (not just on forums either) than feeling down and getting frustrated - we've all been there at some point and understand the problems that occasionally occur!

A lad in my college played a set with Judge Jules the other night

lets word this in real terms..

"A lad at your collage played a set at the same venue as Judge Jules the other night"

doesnt mean this lad is any good. doesnt even mean judge jules was any good that night, and to be honest its not a big deal if you consider DJing to be a JOB and career. its only the hobbie DJs who get all excited about playing in the same line up as jules and tong...

As for you playing night clubs there are two main types of club work..

Dance/specialised night club.

comercial night club..

ill deal with the comercial night clubs first..

most comercial night clubs like your local liquid or envy type venue use an agency to supply there DJs.. this way they can forget about the paper work and the hastle of DJs not turning up or going sick etc... some and this is verry few of them use local DJs they hire them selfs and to get in the door its more about who you know rather than what you know...

if you want to crack this side of the market you have to join the agents or become known localy so you get noticed... maybe the club has a feeder bar neer by and if you work there first and get noticed the management will give you a job in the club rather than you stealing there trade and keeping people in the bar late...

Ok onto the Dance clubs as I guess from the post this is what you want to be doing..

Most Dance nights are arranged by promoters, these people book the club and then find there own DJs..

these promoters are normaly DJs them selfs who wish to put on a good night and if they are not DJs they know loads of good ones and book a head line act to pull the public in ..

you need to get in at the bottom.. get to know the promoter and keep providing him/her with Demos.. maybe you could approch a local bar and put your own night on ..

but what ever you do it wont be easy.. in every town I go to there is always some fool near the DJ booth who comes over and tells me hes a DJ too and then spends the rest of the night watching what I do...

you need to make a name for your self

maybe do mobile work and birthdays for your collage friends..

put a big party on for the collage and DJ at that...

the odds are against you but dont let that get you down.. if your good at what you do then one day somone will notice..

Also maybe you could get a job as a lighting jock or bar man and then when you know the management better make sure they listen to your Demo CD

Good luck

there was a kiddie down the road from me who started Djing as a hobby and "somehow" ended up as the DJ for the biggest club in the area (Utopia, Reading... going back a few years)

not exactly sure how... i think he was a glass collector and did the odd 5 mins here and there when the DJ went to the loo!...

Thanks, i like the idea where i send a mix/demo watever everyday to try and get their attention.

You've probably got a point with the whole chuckin the cd straight in the bin. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/whistling.gif so i guess if i "spam" them every couple of days with my stuff ill have more of a chance//cheers http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif
