jamesmurphy 0
Just got a booking to play at Surf Shop opening next week and I'm wondering what to play. Obviously the Beach Boys have come to mind as have Jan & Dean and the Chantays and others of that genre, but I'm wondering what else to play as it's a surf fashion shop so I'm figuring the clientele will be late teens to early 20s. I don't want to just play chart stuff Ideas?
milhouse 0
I would suggest indie and urban tends to co-inside with the surfing fashion lot, from people I know who are surfers, and what other surf wear shops play. Artist examples? Well.. Bassment Jaxx, Groove Armada, Ian Brown... for a start. Might avoid cheese. Some breaks too maybe. Would be my type of gig! Maybe go into your local O'Neil shop and see what they play.

Corabar Steve 0
The Ghastly Ones are probably one of the top contemporary bands in the "Surf" genre (Napster has one of their albums) Raucous Records Have a great selection of "Surf" albums. I would say other than surf tracks, stick with contemporary indie, urban, hip hop & rock Oh & don't forget Sufin Bird, either the Trashmen (the original version), the Ramones, or at a push the Cramps Steve... Mad bad & dangerous to know Better to study for one hour with the wise, than to drink wine with the foolish. I would not play something like "Surfin' USA" at an event like this. You'd look like a cheesy Peter Kaye http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/tongue.gif Surfers are generally "cool". analyst 0
It is reported that . . . No member of The Beach Boys ever went surfing. Now, after this totally useless contribution to the thread I'm gonna hide http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/blush.gif <a href="http://www.djassociates.org"><img src="http://www.djassociates.org/anims/compres_banner.gif" alt="Join the DJ Associates Disc Jockey Association" border="0" width="468" height="60"></a>

jamesmurphy 0
Once again thanks for all your comments. This is why this forum is so invaluable to newer DJs like myself. Will let you know what I end up playing and then you'll all be able to laugh at how badly I got it wrong...lol And whoever made the Peter Kay comment earlier, you've obviously seen me somewhere. Why didn't you come and say hello when you came to my gig...lol
