Well i bought a single Bose L1 a few weeks ago and i thought i would add my review

A big thanks to all those here on the forum that gave me info on my post when i asked about the Bose early on.

I got lucky as i found one second hand (only 3 months old) so not only did i save a few pounds but got to see and hear one for the first before handing over my sweaty money.

The guy i bought it from was very helpful in showing me the set up in his house and talked me through the do's and donts.

He must have spent a good few hours with me and my first thoughts were i was impressed with the sound quailty.

It had more bass than i thought it would but not as much as normal speakers but then again this is only the single unit and of course you can add to it.

The fisrt time i used the system on a gig was a few weeks ago at a hotel and an ideal first night because it was for about 90 people for a 50th anniversary.

I loved the way it sounded, very clear and the way the sound travels around the room was very impressive.

If i stood at the back of the room, you could hear it and if up close to the speaker it didnt blow your head off.

Even when i went outside you could still hear it through the brick walls clear rather than a dull sound of my normal speakers.

It did amaze me the way the sound covers the room and a few guest did mention how nice it sounded.

The second gig i used the system last week was more of a test for the Bose as it was a 30 birthday party in a bigger room for about 150 people

Again i was well pleased and it sounded great.

I had the volume up more but still no way near full power and the speakers dont struggle just seem to tick over nice and happly.

I even made a discovery that this set up works well with the nasty sound limiter that was at this venue, i only had 2 green lights flash up on the box out of 5 lights!

Even the manager of this venue was scratching his head and looking at my Bose as i did a loud sound check at the start of the night and no power cut!

So the good things about this system are

The clear rich sound quailty

The way the sound travels and fills a room

The positive coments from guests including thoses sitting on a near table

The ease of carrying and setting up are quick and easy (main reason i bought one)

The fact you can add to the system for different venues

and the bad things about this system

well for me i cant really find one, like i said it does not have kick ass bass but im only running one bass box with this so if i need more bass i will use my old set up or buy another Bass box

oh and the flip up panel is a bit of a trip hazard....how do i know this?...mmm well i stood on it the first night! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/oops.gif .....but it does clip back in easy

So over all im well pleased, so much so i hope to buy another pole early next year

Im lucky that most of my gigs are under 200 people so i will keep my old speakers for the big gigs.

I realise ths system is not for everyone but i do recommend you listen to it first and make your mind up after.I myself looked at this set-up at first and turned my nose up at it and thought "your having a laugh"

but i love it now and so does my back!

P.S. For those that get fed up reading about Bose......mmmm why are you still reading this?? http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/tongue.gif

Hi

Sounds like you are well satisfied.

Good. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/thumbup.gif

If the system can be heard as loud / clear through brick walls then a venue manager would have good reason to scratch his or her head! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif

They might end up http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/pooh.gif ing themselves in case of complaints from neighbours or worse still - statutory nuisance fines!! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/laugh.gif

DJs are not immune to charges either! Even the equipment can be seized!

As Mike mentioned before, lets bear in mind that whatever sound system is used the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 replaces the Noise at Work Regulations 1989 (except for the music and entertainment sectors where the 1989 Regulations will continue to apply until 6 April 2008).

You lucky lucky boy, this is my dream to get this system one day it wil happen.

I go out with Brian Mole of Dancemix who along with others on here, has put loads of good onfo on here.

If you are worried about the trip hazard of the cover run with out it, for the gig they go back on easy.

Yes you would need 2 bins for this system.

It also saves loads of space in car, plus what a saving on your back.

To add to the point above about noise, hearing through walls etc.

This is an amazing sound and yes can be heard from quiet a distance, it is not over the allowed levels,

this system works on a very different set up, to what we are all use to.

You can stand right in front of the speaker with your ear right up to the speaker and only just about hear it, then as you move away from it the sound gains in volume.

The main noise level is on the dance floor in front of you, even if the bar is at the far end of the hall in front of you, it can be heard but not blasting your ears of. You will find that the bar staff love this system, as they can hear the music and hear the orders coming over the bar.

This maybe why this system is not every ones cuppa tea.

And there are horses for courses but this system catters for quite a lot of them

Having not yet heard the system...

Could not these alledged advantages be down to the system having a reasonably flat response in the midrange?

Many of us will know that a peaky sound system is bad for the ears, and very difficult to talk above, simply because those peaks generally coincide with our ears' maximum sensitivity - the region used for speech.

Also the distributed radiation by the L1s remove that point source issue so common in normal speakers.

I can't see I'll ever by buying a Bose system, but the technicalities of the design interests me. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/smile.gif

Just thought it would be interesting to hear your comments once you have heard it.

This would then be an unbias comment thats all.

Cheers

I'll get a listen one day... http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/rolleyes.gif

As I've mentioned elsewhere, I have an interest in speaker design and Bose's use of what is essentially a vertical line array represents a departure from conventional speaker design, although the line array, usually horizontal, has been in use for decades in some theatres etc.

For those interested, a good 'street level' analogy for describing the way a line array operates is to consider a light source:

If you have a work bench, you could light it using a single overhead 150 watt bulb, but this would cause problems with shadowing - your head would get in the way, your hands would cast shadows over the work-piece;

However, if you light the area with a more diffused light source such as a 4' flourescent tube, the shadowing is greatly reduced and you get a more even coverage of light.

A poor comparison really, but it gives some idea of the advantages of not having a point source sound, and why the Bose system has a different interaction with the walls of the venue.

I'm starting to sound like a supporter.....

The only real issue I have is with the bass units, but I'll try to reserve comment until I've heard them at high volume. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/smile.gif

Good point about sound limiters... Am working at a venue on Thurday (26th) which has a sound limiter in. I`ll look forward to testing that..

As with the bass Jamie, I have 4 b1`s, you`ll certainly notice the bass then its wow factor.
