BigBen 0
I put a job up in the Gigs available section the other day. As a result I got a call from a female DJ this morning. We had a lovely chat, almost half-an-hour in fact, talking about loads of things. Trouble is, she's a bit shy and doesn't think she has much to offer in the way of advice. I think she would be welcomed with open arms..what do you guys think: Now in her early thirties, she has been DJ'ing for ten years. Her preferred sets are R&B and funky house plus, she can mix. She is an Afro-Asian, originally from Kenya but her parents are Indian, so she has lots of experience in playing music of different ethnicity. Not only is she experienced in the music of India and Pakistan but she has also been exposed to Swahili and, presumably, other African music. She is also a stand-up comedian! Based in Birmingham she is happy to travel the country and would love to make DJ'ing a full time job. Like I said, I think someone with this much experience and talent would be a welcome addition to this board. But what do you guys think? Could anyone benefit from her ethnic DJ experiences, or any of her other skills for that matter? [insert quirky comment]
spinner 0
A shy stand-up comedian? There's no audience to worry about on here so why not?
dj.silver 0
Of course, she'd be a 'good signing'. Get her on here! http://planetsmilies.net/happy-smiley-638.gif I once read about the evils of heavy drinking ................ so I've stopped reading COPYWIGHT: Elmer Fudd 1956, All wights wesewved. C.S 0
She would be a real benefit on the forum, perhaps we should start a thread with questions for her about ethnic music \stand up etc and invite her to see if she could help us ? jamesmurphy 0
From some of the posts I've read here on the forum, someone of her experience (particularly with regard to asian music) will be welcomed with open arms....especially if she's pretty!
digitaldistortion 0
Definitely! The way that markets change, she may well end up giving lots of advice to us (even if she is unsure that there is anything to offer!). Apart from anything else, she might want to perform a routine (musically and otherwise) at a meet-up. Could be v. interesting!! Edited November 29, 2006 by digitaldistortion Cheers! Roy B. Steve_Mitchell 0
A while ago, I had a pm from an Asian lady claiming she was coming to Southport for the weekend. She fits the same discription as Rickardo, (bigben) has just discribed. She pm-ed me and asked if I had any spare jobs she could do whilst she was up here. Am pretty sure Mr harris has had the same pm.. Just a thought. Steve 5 European cups and 18 leagues, that`s what we call history.

Danno13 0
Yep, i think i've had a PM from her as well when i offered work once. Just a though though, surely if she's shy of posting then a post about it like this isn't going to help... BigBen 0
Just a though though, surely if she's shy of posting then a post about it like this isn't going to help... It did cross my mind Danno. However, I'm hoping that the marvellous show of support can only encourage her to visit and introduce herself properly. As mentioned, I know some of the London guys get gigs where her knowledge of ethnic music could be invaluable. Thanks guys - knew you'd come through! brianmole 0
the more women the better :amen:  Interesting post Rich. Back in August, I had a call from a lovely young lady who seems to answer this exact description, wanting to network etc... As I was driving, after a good conversation, I asked if she would be kind enough to send me her details by email, but nothing ever arrived. There is nothing wrong with making friends in this industry, supporting each other can only open doors for all of us. C'mon Rich, invite her here, she will be most welcome, and I am sure her knowledge will prove to be a great asset to DJU, and hopefully she will also get a lot out of DJU like we all have. wizard 0
I did a couple of weddings in the summer where African music was requested............ her knowledge would have been invaluable to me at the time. After being given some CD's by one of the brides I now regularly use them..... some great rhythms....... Just cannot pronounce who does them :damn: The oldest swinger in town....... probably. jamminroadshow 0
I think that we all have things to learn and there is no one out there that can not offer something. I would say that the best thing she can not is just post something i was scared when i first started (iam not a woman lol) but i was made to feel welcome. There are not may women on this forum so it is nice to hear what the ladies think just the same as hearing what asian people have to say etc. we are all different but have one common goal and that is to entertain...

Could anyone benefit from her ethnic DJ experiences, or any of her other skills for that matter? Hi hope you guys and girlies are all well. Sorry its taken a while to reply to this post myself but i have been a bit busy with a few shows and shaking my money maker !! See, i'm not shy when it comes to stand-up comedy 'cos on stage and with an audience its fantastic ! The adrenalin flows and you just fly. It is the BEST feeling in the world. Much better than drugs. I use this sometimes with my other love for music and it all swims really well together but i find it hard to 'big' myself up sometimes and find others are able to make themselves heard more when they are doing the hard sell bit. I always feel like i should apologise when selling myself :joe: I should try to take on one of my 'alter-ego' type comic characters and use this to sell myself with. Don't get me wrong, I'm not shy when it comes to wanting to be heard on stage or at gigs. I do really well. I have had some incredibly positive feedback and it's been fantastic having repeat bookings from customers who return. Its just that forums like this can be a bit daunting at times but I have to say I am getting better at using them. Thank-you for your help. You guys are really COOL !! I have found a lot of support from this little community. Have fantastic seasonal Yule Tide !! Edited December 8, 2006 by Paul_Smith
