Just had a call from a woman who saw me playing on saturday night, she has canceled the DJ she had booked for her wedding next year and would like me to do it for her instead... Why I asked ?

Well aparently the DJ who was recomended to her by the venue looked rather blank and stoped talking to her when she told him what sort of music she would like played...

Basicly she wants HARD HOUSE along the lines of Tidy Trax and Lisa Lashes and none of the normal wedding cheese that normaly gets played...

this will be the 4th wedding booking in as many months where the request for no cheese and mixed club music as been made...

A trend has started are you guys ready ???????

How old are the bookers? Do you think it's because the age of people getting married is getting younger?

I've seen a trend in more "newer" music being requested by the B&Gs.... Again mainly because they seem to be 21-25 years old....

Currently ill-equipped for a whole night I think :( d'n'b doesn't seem to be my forté! Just had a cursory look & identified only the following stuff, at a stretch :

LK - DJ Marky / XRS / MC Stamina 174bpm

Another Planet - Pendulum 172bpm

The Basement Track (dub) - High Contrast 172bpm (lurve this track)

Shake UR Body - Shy FX & T-Power ft Di 174bpm

Hmm just trying to think what else (on a commercial tip) I could summon up if it were needed ...

I would say a total lack of forethought by the B&G. Gets back to the argument that should the B&G just have the genre that they like played or should they appreciate that there will be granparents, parents and uncles and aunts there that may not appreciate their choice of genre?

Will they think it is a good idea when guests find the bar somewhere else, don't get up and dance or start to leave early because the music is giving them a headache?

I love club music and love playing it but it doesn't appeal to everyone.

I could do this and bang the mixes out all night long but not for a Wedding, havent they thought about their family and the rest of the guests...

no the people getting married are not younger... they are in there 30's... wind the clock back 10 or so years when these people were at uni or just starting out there adult social life and you will find that super clubs and all night drug fuel'ed dance partys were the in thing..

todays 20 somthings run out of steam at 2am.....

Currently ill-equipped for a whole night I think d'n'b doesn't seem to be my forté!

Dont confuse D n B with Hard house.. totaly different...

havent they thought about their family and the rest of the guests...

I asked them and they said they had... its been made clear to all the guests that the reception party will be hard house and club music, not a cheesy disco... also dress code is going to be Club ware not formal, so expect white golves whistles horns and glow sticks.....

I love club music and love playing it but it doesn't appeal to everyone

No but it appeals to the B&G and thats what they want the night to be... I know if it was my wedding or my birthday party disco I wouldnt want to hear a single part/cheesey song all night from the DJ..

What concerns me more is the resistance from some of the DJs, I totaly understand as traditional mobile DJ's your job has been to play all kinds of music new and old and that a whole night of one style of music is not totaly possible in some cases, however times are changing and the clients expectaions are changing. its sensible to say no to a gig like this if you dont have the music. but when more and more gigs are specifying styles of music be it House, Indie, rock, drum and bass, this is where a forum like DJU realy helps us all as we draw upon the knollage of the DJs who do know the music..

This image of a peter kay working mans club style cheesey DJ playing the same music at every gig is somthing that needs to be left behind so that the industry can mature and DJs can earn decent money and get some respect from the public...

I went through a phase of accommodating peoples playlists in full and disagreed with other DJ's who said that playlists for the whole evening were a bad idea but after a couple of awful gigs which were quite depressing because no one seemed to be enjoying themselves, I am now of the opinion that forcing one genre of music on a mixed group is a bad idea.

Making it clear to guests before hand that the whole evening with be hard house and club music will not change peoples preference and make them enjoy the evening.

To be honest, I am now of the opinion that I'd rather not do a gig where I had no choice but to play one genre of music to a mixed group. I don't enjoy it, the guests don't enjoy it and it doesn't do a lot for my reputation!

Its a shame that a B&G go to all the trouble and expense for their special day where they invite family and friends to have a good time and celebrate their special day but then go and force them to endure an evening of entertainment that could possibly spoil the whole day.

Not everyone went to uni or went to super clubs and all night drug fuel'ed dance party's!

Duh yes true - shows how inept I am when it comes to genres  ... anything 150bpm or greater in my mind may get inappropriately categorised as DnB :ouch:

Got any examples of commercial/crossover hard house tracks that I might have somewhere? :hphone:

And me, will be turning a lot of work away if this trend happens. Do not know enough about that type of music and do not particularly like that type of music, so I would turn the gig down for one more suited to my abilities and knowledge.

I get confused by all these differing genre's and like some on here would probably stick a lot of tunes in the wrong catagory.

do you guys know of any sites which explain the differences between say D n B and hard house, as well as others, and where to listen to examples.

Hi

I have a had a few like that recently the last one was for a party of 150 people, aged between 35 and 50 very middle class types. They describbed themselves as ex clubbers who wanted to a club night (house and funky house) with out the hastle. Played Faithless, Cafe del Mar etc all night, not a bit of cheese in sight, got two booking on the night and a promise for more. In fact I had more people come up to me to thank me for that evening than I would normally get at typical cheese fest.

Regards

Paul

Yo to the wedding massive, Mixmaster P in the place, doing the music to get off ya face, to the east to the west to the norf and souf we are the ibiza massive that will sort you out......

Thankfully here in Ireland, the let's be trendy like Londoners do things, hasn't hit hit weddings here, doubt it ever will..there are weddings etc and then there are nightclubs

A wedding remains an event like most functions where a mixed crowd gets to dance with people that most of which they have never met before.

In this case the Bride and Groom would have been better off taping Judge Jules and just playing that, oh yes some glowsticks would have come in handy for the guests....

All they needed was planes flying overhead, and some cockney wideboy talking over the mike and they could be in Ibizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzza havin it large....

All this labels thing gets a wee bit boring after a while

Hard House, Left House, Funky House, it's all bascially music made by a computer, edited on protools and named with some name...

Yup I play alot of it in nightclubs each weekend....

In fact people are getting married older, in their 30's, so they have grown up with the local poptastic so called funny breakfast crew(that format is 50 years old!) telling them that anything older than 10 years is cheesy....so they believe it!

One minute it's trendy the next minute it's cheesy....

Of course I play clubby music at a wedding, but it tends to be towards the end and songs that people actually have heard of!

Hard house well the stuff that's made in Britain is the stuff that sounds like two bits of rubber being rubbed together(the kind of stuff Fergie used to play on radio 1)

Drum and Bass-basically a speedy version of old reggae beats, with a few effects thrown in

"Hey welcome B&G to the place to be, it's music for just you and me, how many people are going to stay til the end we will have to wait and see"

Why did the B&G book the other DJ in the first place?

Becuase untill this weekend they didnt know you could get a disco that played the music they wanted so they were going to settle for any disco and providing a couple of CDs....

Instead of sticking to the normal show perhaps its time to learn about music you have no knowledge of ? A proffesional dj should play what the customer pays for ? and as for not doing gigs that you dont enjoy then thats down to whether its your hobby or your profession imo.

I will try anything,once!

Really? Well at least they know what music they want.

Wonder if there's any other Wedding services they didn't know or realise they could have for their Wedding Day

People should have what they want but it shows a trend towards selfishness that is ruining our society when a bride and groom dont give a stuff about their guests at their own reception.
