ChrisPointon 0
How long have you been DJ'ing? 33 Years What inspired you to become a DJ? 60’s Pirate Radio, Not arf all right. What type of "Do" was your first gig? A Christmas Dinner Dance – Saturday 18th December 1970 – Filling the band breaks How much did you charge (Mikeee please convert this from Shilings and pence to decimal when its your go..) 10/- (50p to you lot or .9€) What equipment did you have to begin with? ICElectrics (re – badged Citronic), Fane speakers, Garrad TT, FAL Light boxes Whats the worst/most embarassing thing you've done in front of an audience? Ladies and Gentleman, pray silence for the Bride of the Father, Oops – or – Telling a rather well known super model she looked like a manageress for Dorothy Perkins, well it was a joke, but she just didn’t get it What is your favourite type of function now? EG: Wedding, 18th Birthday party, funeral wake.. I like the challenge of a Wedding, you just don’t know wants coming next, other than ABBA, Gloria Gaynor etc. Is there anything that you include in your show now, that you wish you'd done/known when you started? (Not equipment, but in human/performer terms) Sales technique to get more money What do you feel you offer your public, that makes you a better DJ than "the next guy/girl"? Quality of service. I don’t think I’m that much better than the next DJ, but my age gives me a much better insight of the wider audience, which in turn means that when I speak to people (the client), they hear what they want to hear. Have you ever bought something for your show that you wish you hadn’t? and why? Emm - good one, thinking cap on. Other than new release singles that never charted and never got asked, and I never played. – I Can’t think of anything Whats your next DJ purchase likely to be? Well, on order at the moment, Carsbro bass bins to go with my top cabs. 3 x 1 mtr of 1” Tri Lite. And possibly a new twin CD player in January. 8 outside PA horns, a mobile stage unit and eh! I’m dreaming again. If you could get someone to invent a new piece of disco equipment for your show, what would it be? A fold up roadie, get him out of the box to set up, put him back in the box until the end of the night……. What do you think is the best thing about DJ'ing. Get ya money for nothing and ya chicks for free… The freedom, working different places, meeting different people, and a bit of travelling thrown in What do you think is the worst thing about DJ'ing. The weather, I hate getting soaked at 2.00am What would make you stop DJ'ing (if anything). Other than health, Winning the lotto or a job on Radio two How do you think DJ'ing will change, in the next 5 years? Changes in the law, leaving only 10 legal Disco’s in the whole of the UK, getting £5K a night. The Povety level in the UK will get worse so DJ’s will not be undercutting, but forcing the price up. Most stupid thing anyone's ever said to you at a gig? You can’t be the DJ, you’re too smart - pratt Best advice you were ever given by a fellow DJ? Never play what you like, unless the crowd want the same thing And worst advice you were ever given You see that girl over there…. Don’t give up your day job Name 3 songs that 95% of the time will fill you dance floor!! Van Morrison – Brown Eyed Girl B 52’s – Love shack Abba – Dancing Queen Age 49 (and a bit) Location Farnham, Surrey Martial status Almost Unmarried - again Education level Half reasonable – I think Mode of transportation My trusty steed – Volvo 740 estate, BMW 523i SE What equipment do you currently use? Citronic, C-Audio, Sony, Abstract, NJD, Constella, Chauvet, Anytronics, Beyer Dynamic, AKG, Sennheisser, Soundlab. (This was quicker than each individual item) How much have you "invested" in equipment? Hells Bells – ask my accountant. It must be £XK What was your reason for becoming a DJ? Mistaken Identity Approximately how many gigs have you done to date? Average 3 per week X 33 years = 5,148 – 20% = 4,118.4. That’s just a guess buts it’s as close as anything else I can think of. Gary 0
Ahh inspired by Pirate Radio huh? That would explain the eye-patch, the parrot, and the "real" first mode of transportation being a 65ft wooden hulled Clipper (Very economic, does about 15 miles to the galleon) And you've been DJ'ing for 33 years, and you're only 49 (cough)...wow - you started when you were only 17... Thats nothing, I've added up my accountants timesheets...he'll be celebrating his 400th birthday next week. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif Great stuff Mikeee, good answers. mikeee 0
How do I remember the date so well, it's the day after my birthday. And I meet the engineer that built all the kit, and I thought he was the guy from the local record shop (remember them http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif ). Hence the mistaken ID, got chatting, well the rest is history. As for TVDJA, went to the first meeting in 78', couldn't make my mind up. Joined on 3 occasions during the 80's, and once in the early 90's. Why didn't I stay a member, I didn't think it could offer me anything - sound familiar. Joined again about 95 and realised, it's not all about "what can I get" but what can I offer, I started to see the bigger picture. So I do understand when people say to me, " what can you offer me", I just accept that they can't see the bigger picture, of offering assitance to others and getting assistantance in return. And thats probably why this forum has over 600 members and only 30 or so post. But I do believe that there is a desperate need for an association that can bring all DJ's together and offer a united voice. etc etc etc. ..playing all the hits for you... ....whether you may be.... Why can't I see what i going on???
